Effects of Inconsistent Behaviors on Person Impressions: A Multidimensional Study

Abstract

This study addresses effects of expectancy-inconsistent behaviors on two characteristics of person impressions: the target person 's perceived position and fit within a multidimensional trait structure of Implicit Personality Theory (IPT). Inconsistency was manipulated with respect to two dimensions of IPT evaluation and potency. Behaviors with inconsistent evaluation implications did not affect the impressions. Inconsistencies on potency produced an asymmetry: Unexpected strong behaviors had the effect of higher ratings on traits reflecting high-potency, but not proportionately lower ratings on low-potency traits (producing a shift in the target's position as well as a decrease in the target's fit within subjects'IPT); effects of unexpected weak behaviors were substantially smaller. Thus effects of inconsistent information depended on (a) dimension of contrast (evaluation/potency), (b) valence of initial expectancy, and (c) valence of response trait scales.

To investigate impression formation, researchers tend to rely on statements that describe a person’s behavior (e.g., “Alex ridicules people behind their backs”). These statements are presented to participants who then rate their impressions of the person. However, a corpus of behavior statements is costly to generate, and pre-existing corpora may be outdated and might not measure the dimension(s) of interest. The present study makes available a normed corpus of 160 contemporary behavior statements that were rated on 4 dimensions relevant to impression formation: morality, competence, informativeness, and believability. In addition, we show that the different dimensions are non-independent, exhibiting a range of linear and non-linear relationships, which may present a problem for past research. However, researchers interested in impression formation can control for these relationships (e.g., statistically) using the present corpus of behavior statements.

An actor may display inconsistent behavior across different situations (e.g., conscientious in one situation, nonconscientious in another) and yet still be perceived as a coherent person. How do perceivers accomplish this? To investigate this question, in two experiments, participants read about a target person whose behavior across eight situations varied randomly or covaried systematically with goal-relevant situations. In Experiment 1, although the two targets displayed equivalent amounts of variability, participants (a) found the systematic target more coherent and (b) were more likely to associate the systematic target with an underlying goal. In Experiment 2, this finding was extended to group targets but, as expected, not to low entitativity groups, suggesting that participants make such inferences only when there is an a priori expectation of coherence. These findings indicate that the target's goal is an important component of perceived coherence.

These studies examined the effects of outcome dependency on the motive to form accurate versus desirable impressions, as reflected in attention, liking, and judgments of task-related social (Exp. 1 and 2) or intellectual (Exp. 3) qualities of the target person. Both cooperatively and competitively dependent subjects formed more favorable impressions than control subjects (Exp. 1), but this effect was due primarily to the expected interaction and not to the dependence (Exp. 2 and 3). Cooperative dependence did produce optimistic judgments of the target's abilities compared with other conditions (Exp. 3). Competitively dependent subjects did not derogate the abilities of the target person; instead, their judgments were moderate and relatively unaffected by initial expectancies in all three experiments. Further, reading times of these subjects were longer than in the other conditions. These results suggest that a competitor is perceived as a potential threat, producing caution, careful processing, and conservative judgments.

This research explored how basic semantic dimensions of evaluation, potency, and activity influence attributions of who causes an interpersonal event. Two experiments examined how the dimensions affected (a) college students’ judgments about which particular social identities were better agents or patients for generic positive and negative actions and (b) their judgments about who caused specific actions described by sentences containing the same identities. The semantic characteristics of the nouns and verbs and “goodness of thematic role” accounted for 44% of the variance in attribution judgments. Experiment 3 examined the effects of evaluation and potency on state verbs. Attributions were again made to the thematic role whose traits matched the valence of the state’s evaluation. More potent subjects and more potent verbs elicited stronger attributions. Thus, basic dimensions of affective meaning that underlie the words used to describe interpersonal interactions help account for observers’ judgments of who is responsible for those events.

Ambivalent attitudes simultaneously invoke positive and negative evaluations of a single object (e.g., Thompson, Zanna, & Griffin, 1995). Consequently, ambivalent attitudes towards unfamiliar objects should result from evaluative inconsistency of relevant information about the object (Jonas, Diehl, & Bromer, 1997). The present study shows that;the formation of novel attitudes on the basis of evaluatively inconsistent information takes longer than-the formation of attitudes based upon positive, negative, or neutral information. This impact of ambivalence should be mediated by the perceived difficulty of attitude formation. Need to Evaluate (Jarvis & Petty 1996), a chronic tendency to form attitudes spontaneously is assumed to moderate the level of ambivalence, as well as perceived difficulty and attitude response latencies. The hypothesis was tested in a within-subjects design (N = 30). An unfamiliar object was either described by strongly, moderately, or slightly evaluatively inconsistent information or by positive, negative, or neutral information. Furthermore, links to impression formation are illustrated and differences with regard to attitude formation are discussed.

Two scenario studies address the effects of the consequences of an actor's behavior as a function of behavioral causes (dispositional, situational) and behavior valence. In Experiment 1, the behaviors were likeability related. As predicted, inferences were more extreme when the behaviors produced consequences for others than when they did not affect others-but only when the behaviors were likeable. In Experiment 2, the behaviors were ability related. Only incompetent behaviors were judged more extremely when they affected others. A parallel pattern of findings emerged for the effects of causes. Judgments were more extreme for dispositional than for situationally caused behaviors but only when the behaviors were likeable or incompetent. Thus, inferences of likeable and incompetent behaviors were affected by causes and consequences, but dislikeable and competent behaviors were perceived as informative regardless of their causes and consequences.

This chapter addresses the question of how schema-inconsistent information about persons is processed and how it affects impressions. Three strategies in resolving inconsistencies are proposed, based on an integration of the literature on trait attribution, impression formation, and person memory. First, inconsistent descriptions can be attributed to different nondispositional factors. Second, recognition of nondispositional factors can produce a conditional trait attribution, leading to multiple, situation-specific, representations of the person. Third, inconsistencies can instigate a search for a trait implication that fits both the consistent and inconsistent descriptions, producing a change of meaning. The effects of conditional trait attribution and meaning change on impressions are discussed.

Three determinants of the factor structures of personality traits are investigated. The 1st, selection of variables, was controlled by using 57 bipolar scales, selected to be representative of common trait terms. In analyses of 7 data sets, variants of the “Big Five” factors were always found. Factor similarities were very strong for the 3 largest factors, which were transformed into general evaluation and 2 descriptive dimensions. As a 2nd determinant, judgments about real people were compared with judgments about the conceptual relations among traits. Factor structures based on the 2 types of judgments are similar, but those based on conceptual judgments tend to be simpler. The 3rd determinant involved the degree of restriction of the sample to evaluatively homogeneous targets. Restriction of range reduced the size of all factors, especially Factor II. Findings from previous studies are integrated within this framework.

The view that the intuitive psychologist exaggerates the consistency of personality implies that dispositional constructs are condition-free summary statements about generalized behavioral tendencies. This article considers the alternative view that dispositional constructs summarize specific condition—behavior contingencies. Despite their condition-free appearance, the dispositional constructs used by child and adult observers in their personality descriptions were hedged by modifiers that reflected knowledge of the variability of behavior. Children's descriptions of their aggressive and withdrawn peers included probabilistic hedges that indicated uncertainty about the occurrence of behaviors (person sometimes does x). Adults made dispositional attributions with greater certainty, but more often modified them with conditional statements which identified when dispositionally relevant behaviors might be observed (person does x when y). Content analyses of these conditional statements revealed that adults systematically linked specific categories of conditions (e.g., aversive interpersonal events) to specific categories of social behavior (e.g., aggressive acts). The results help to clarify how people may hedge dispositional terms in ways that reflect their sensitivity to covariation between situations and behaviors.

We examined whether inferences from likable versus dislikable behavior are differentially affected by suspicion about ulterior motives of the actor. Using a 2 (Target Behavior: Likable/Dislikable) x 2 (Situational Demands for positive vs. negative behavior) design, we found that a likeable target person was evaluated less favorably when his behavior conformed to situational demands than when it deviated from these demands, whereas a dislikable target was evaluated similarly across different situational demands. In contrast to these evaluative ratings, judgments of the person's genuineness as well as reading times indicated that, regardless of whether target behavior was likable or dislikable, when it conformed to situational demands subjects were suspicious of the actor's motives and engaged in more thoughtful processing. We conclude that dislikable behavior can induce suspicion just as other behaviors that conform to situational demands, but this suspicion does not lead subjects to withhold a correspondent trait inference, as is usually the case when ulterior motives are suspected.

Two studies addressed the differential impact of unexpected positive versus negative behaviors on trait ratings and free response impression descriptions, using a 2 (Expected Likability) x 2 (Consistency of Subsequent Behavior) design. Unexpected negative behaviors had more impact than unexpected positive behaviors. In Experiment 1, this negativity effect was produced by an increase in ratings on negative traits, rather than a decrease on positive traits. In Experiment 2, unexpected negative behaviors produced an increase in the number of negative traits mentioned in impression descriptions, as well as a decrease in the number of positive traits, suggesting that negative behaviors reduced the accessibility of positive traits. Unexpected positive behaviors increased the number of conditional qualifiers attached to positive attributes, indicating more elaboration in the impressions. Results illustrate that there is more to negativity effects than is revealed by global evaluative ratings.

The hypothesis tested in this study is that judgments of the personality of unfamiliar target persons correspond better with the subject's Implicit Personality Theory (IPT) than judgments of the personality of familiar persons do. Each subject's IPT was individually assessed and represented using multidimensional scaling. Then judgments were obtained about three familiar and three unfamiliar target persons. The correspondence between a subject's IPT and his/her judgments about each target person was measured by fitting these judgments to the subject's IPT structure. This correspondence measure was significantly better for unfamiliar than for familiar targets. This result confirmed the hypothesis.

Several different methods of gradient analysis, including correspondence analysis and Gaussian ordination, can be characterized as unfolding methods. These techniques are applicable whenever single-peaked response functions are at issue, either with respect to known environmental characteristics or else with respect to data driven reorderings of the sites. Unfolding gives a joint representation of the site/species relationships in terms of the distance between 2 types of points, the location of which can be constrained in various ways. A classification based on loss functions is given, as well as a convergent algorithm for the weighted least squares case. -Author

This chapter discusses the traits that a person perceives as characteristic of himself (or herself) and of others, and the beliefs that he or she holds about which traits tend to go together and which do not. Parsimonious ways of representing this type of complex and loosely organized system of perceived traits and relations have been discussed. The perception of stable physical and psychological characteristics and the beliefs about their co-occurrences are important objects of research for social psychologists, not only because of the ubiquity with which a person thinks and talks about himself and others but also because of the central role that personality perception plays in everyday social interaction and social decisions. The chapter describes laboratory analogs of the trait inference and personality and summarizes a number of findings that have resulted from their use, particularly studies involving the application of multidimensional scaling and, to some extent, clustering and factor analysis. Naturalistic personality and individual differences have been described. The chapter highlights the personality perception in children and some future directions for the study of personality perception.
