Ayrıca araştırmalarda standart olmayan aşırı, aykırı veya kendine özgü durumların çalışılmasında bütüncül tek durum deseni tercih edilmektedir. ...
... For this purpose, a qualitative research paradigm was determined and a case approach was implemented in the study. In addition, case studies are divided into four groups: holistic single case, holistic multiple case design, nested single case and nested multiple case design (Yin, 2017). Among these product case studies, a single case study design was used. ...
... The qualitative research method is recognizable by researchers for the use of semistructured interviews, and the specific purpose is to address the what answer (Bailey, 2014). Illustrated by Yin (2012), the qualitative research method is pertinent in meeting the goal of this study to explore military spouses' implementation of strategies to sustain their business operations while relocating. Yin wrote that case studies are the preferred design when the focus is on a current real-life event. ...
... Mukhopadhyay and Gupta (2014) posited that case study, ethnographic, narrative, and phenomenological are the primary designs of the qualitative methodology. Yin (2012) wrote that case studies are the preferred design when represented with questions that focus on current real-life events. This qualitative multiple case study allowed the researcher to explore what strategies military spouses used to generate and/or implement to operate their small businesses while concurrently relocating. ...

In an exploratory study, the researcher explores the phenomenon that has no clear, single set of outcomes (Yin, 2012). The multiple case studies contain more than one single case within the research (Hebert, Takupiwa, Honest, & Ephraim, 2013). ...

China’s rural revitalization strategy has led to the emergence of a new group of immigrant entrepreneurs. As they manage industries in villages, social contradictions with the native individuals inevitably arise. To reveal the social contradictions between immigrant entrepreneurs and native individuals, this study constructs a framework based on social conflict theory and employs a qualitative approach combining methods such as participative observation and unstructured interviews with immigrant entrepreneurs, native individuals, and village officials in Xian Village. Key findings reveal the following: (1) Disparities in lifestyle, entertainment methods, and commercial interests are the main factors contributing to the social contradictions. (2) The presentation of contradictions is summarized in three forms: the segregation of production space, the emergence of interest groups, and the outbreak of intermittent conflicts. (3) Although these contradictions seem to be part of everyday life and self-regulating, with the favoritism of local governments, the power network of the village is further eroded by immigrant entrepreneurs, and native individuals are faced with the risk of being marginalized, which seems to be a tricky phenomenon in the process of rural revitalization. These findings summarize the causes and localized presentation forms of social contradictions, enhance the applicability of social conflict theory, and supplement valuable cases from developing countries.

This paper presents the discussion on the impact of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to English language teachers’ decision and performance in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching. This study carried out a multiple study on two different teachers from different institutional and academic status background in Indonesia. Interviews were carried out to the participant to obtain deeper information concerning their experience in different types of CPD, and how it could influence the way they perceive ICT usefulness and enhance their teaching performance. The result of this study is expected to provide practical contributions particularly to the policy makers to improve teachers’ competences by designing appropriate curriculum and CPD in accordance with the teachers’ need in the digital era. The result of study indicated that both teachers tended to develop their TPACK (Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) competences from informal CPD they had from informal co-learning with colleagues and informal network learning from online resources. They also pointed out that governments provided teachers with online-based training that they could access to governments’ official websites.

A civil engineering company in Northwestern China faces communication and innovation challenges, preventing it from moving forward as an organization. These issues stem from challenges of managing knowledge related to technological innovation within the organization. While the company is developing new practices generated in its civil engineering design service, knowledge management system development is insufficiently adopted. Knowledge management has been proven to be an efficient means to create, identify, and share knowledge and best practices in developed countries such as the UK, Japan, and the US. This comparative case study explores the successful applications of knowledge management in technological innovation for companies like the one in Northwest China -- by comparing it to two different organizations in different countries. These companies were chosen as part of this research as they provide insights through the lenses of the macro and micro issues relating to knowledge management. The findings from the study should provide practical guidance for civil engineering companies to practice knowledge management of technological innovation.

Every nation has some identity attributes that make it distinct from other nations, of which settlement pattern is the most important one. There are studies on essential components of a viable settlement and also there are studies on the evolution pattern of settlements in this region. But, no studies were found that explains the “generic pattern” of any particular settlement typology. It is observed in the Bengal delta that every time a settlement begins to evolve, it follows the same common principles, giving rise to a certain pattern. To identify that pattern of Bengal settlements, the present coastline, which is the active delta and represents the thousands of years old geo-climatic context of this region, has been analysed. The objective of this study is to identify the generic settlement pattern in the Bengal Delta. The sub-objectives are to find out the phenomenon behind the evolution of a particular settlement pattern in the Bengal Delta in response to traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and finally to validate the settlement pattern as the generic one which can be used as a basis for future planning and design at any scale and level. The research has been conducted through a triangulation of literature review, phenomenological approach and qualitative data analysis. The analogical context is identified through the historic phenomenological interpretation of available literature. The historic settlement pattern is reconstructed for the phenomenological study in the present context to verify the prevalence frequency and intensity of the historic pattern. This research essentially attempted to connect methodically, the various threads and fill up the gaps to identify the order that prevails in the settlement pattern of the Bengal Delta, thereby testing the hypothesis, that “Bengal Delta has a generic settlement pattern”. From the three stratified zones, 22 case study settlements were selected at random for the field survey, KII and FGD. On analysing all the data, historic interpretation of the settlement patterns and logically identifying the phenomenon behind the development, a ‘generic settlement pattern’ is revealed. Theoretically bracketed settlement components, their growth pattern and character is further scrutinized in the analogous historic Bengal delta context to ‘confirm’ that they are tied up in a single thread and further validated in both rural and urban context. The generic settlement module is found to vary between (1 km to 1½ km) x (1 km to 1½ km) with a population ranging from 30-100 homesteads. Depending on the context, scale, and level of development, this module takes on various shapes through logical transformation, mutation, adaptations or resiliencies. The elements of a settlement are connected both physically and psychologically. The generic settlement pattern as identified comprises of four parts i.e. homogeneous part, central part, circulatory part and community interaction part. The communication route gives the settlement inter and intra-accessibility with the community facilities and organize the whole settlement spontaneously with TEK and gives shape to the settlement. Settlements in Bengal Delta employ the wisdom, knowledge, and practices handed down from generation to generation. There is an order both in the internal system and external outline of the settlements. The pattern that is identified is generic in nature because it is found to be the basis of all the organic settlements at various scales and levels in Bangladesh (which is a part of the Bengal Delta) unless it is modified by some external forces. The studies in the Bengal Delta context found some common denominator that provides the basis of a ‘generic pattern’ persisting and prevailing in all levels and scales when evolved by TEK organically. Transplanted ideas not rooted in the context, particularly during the colonial era, has brought about some changes in the settlement pattern that cause chaos. For sustainability purposes ‘transformation’ instead of ‘transplantation’ is identified to be the right approach for settlement planning. The generic settlement pattern that is identified for Bengal Delta can be used as a basic framework for any future settlement planning and design in this region for its sustainability.
... The data that has been collected is then analyzed and grouped for sorting or categorization based on certain factors. The results of the grouping are interpreted and identified by comparing the theories that have been listed in the literature review, otherwise known as time series analysis (Yin, 2012) The analysis results are presented with the relevant theories, and at the end, there is a conclusion accompanied by suggestions that can be followed up by further researchers and become input and recommendations for future research. ...

The lack of public awareness of waste management seems to be a never-ending problem. Tasikmalaya Regency is one of the areas in West Java that has received much attention for being a regency surrounded by garbage around the main road. This article aims to determine the government's communication strategy in implementing public policies related to waste management in Tasikmalaya Regency. This research uses a constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach through observation and in-depth interviews. The results show that the local government has made a strong commitment through Tasikmalaya District Regulation Number 3 Year 2022 on Waste Management to solve the waste problem in Tasikmalaya. However, in its implementation, there are communication barriers, both internally and externally, that cause policy implementation to be far from the predetermined target because the socialization of rules, including education to the community, is not massive and maximum so that the messages conveyed do not change people's behavior. This condition has profound implications for the lack of citizen participation in overcoming and minimizing waste piles. Weak law enforcement is a problem, especially for industrial plastic waste producers. Infrastructure issues, including facilities such as waste transportation fleets, waste disposal facilities, human resources, and budget limitations, are still arduous for local governments. Environmental communication is the key to two-way interaction between the government, community, and stakeholders.

The new competitive environment within the higher education sector is propelling most Universities to continuously embark on some thoughtful strategic and consistent marketization and planned effort to project their corporate image and reputation. Established a little over two decades ago, the University for Development Studies (UDS) as a higher educational institution is gradually moving from its growth stage to a matured staged. This requires the university to move from a comprehensive institution to a more focused entity. It is therefore extremely crucial to examine what makes the UDS unique and how the community perceive the University as an institution and finally, in what ways key stakeholders or actors can do to improve its corporate identity and reputation. The paper argues that the corporate identity and reputation of the University lie in its Community Development embedded programmes and the blended community-based teaching and learning model. The paper found that 69.84% of the respondents agree that the current corporate reputation of UDS was good. The paper also found several approaches to enhancing the corporate image of the university. These include a well-design marketing strategy; designing market-oriented academic programmes, establish more lecture series, and support quality research publications. Other recommendations for improving the corporate identity of the University are discussed.

Indonesia is one of the countries that has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and ranks 20th among the countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases. Like other countries, COVID-19 has also negatively impacted various sectors of society, including social, cultural, economic, and educational aspects. The Indonesian government has implemented various policies from the central to the village level, such as movement restrictions through partial lockdown policies, the implementation of health protocols, COVID-19 patient management through testing, tracing, treatment, and vaccination. The complex and frequently changing policies, adjusted according to the latest COVID-19 situation, often cause confusion among the public and, in turn, lead to some people's neglectful attitudes. In dealing with the complexity of policies and their implementation, the role of street-level bureaucrats, specifically Babinsa, who are part of the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) and serve at the village level, becomes crucial. This study aims to delve into the role of Babinsa as street-level bureaucrats and the dynamics of grassroots-level COVID-19 handling through actor collaboration. The study concludes that Babinsa collaborates with village governments, healthcare workers, religious leaders, community figures, and the business community in performing their roles to strengthen capacity and resources in managing COVID-19. Additionally, the study identifies various factors that influence the performance of Babinsa as street-level bureaucrats in the implementation of COVID-19 handling policies, including sectoral ego, budget constraints, community characteristics, and limited healthcare personnel.

Development of sustainable tourism is viewed through the scope of planning procedure, participation of all stakeholders, and resolving possible conflicts. The methodology is based on empirical exploration and compared two case studies of the Middle Danube Flow coast segment. The common denominator, apart from the location in the same region and on the bank of an international river, is the use of recycled land for the purpose of converting it into a tourist complex. This paper has a wider theoretical background, tailored and selected for this research purpose. Ambition was expressed to answer the questions of how to carry out the strategically set tasks at the level of detailed design and implementation, what kind of interactions to expect, and if it is possible to single out key approaches and steps and form recommendations for achieving satisfactory and non-conflicting results. The authors search and look for similarities among the chosen development directions and the decisions made which can point to a common methodological framework and options for creating an attractive, profitable, and sustainable tourist product. The conclusion is that desirable sustainable tourism can be reached through careful location and content selection, choice of adequate land use, and balanced alignment between protection and development. This paper indicates the possibility of an additional step towards a joint solution, which is not only a compromise, but is valued as being of high quality and desirable.

The article is based on interviews with twelve young footballers who turned pro with the Norwegian top-flight club Odd BK. After asking why they succeeded in making the transition from promising talent to established top-level footballer, we investigate how the players’ own explanations tally with the two predominant theories in research on talent development, namely deliberate practice and successful talent development environments. We shall see that the basic elements of these theories resemble the players’ own recipes for success and more or less specify how the players and the club can achieve progress. However, neither of these theories relates to the structural situation that the players find themselves in, namely the fact that most hard-working players are never offered a professional contract. The looming uncertainty provides fertile ground for the development of notions of luck and the intricate workings of chance.

Program evaluation (henceforth PE) is a phase of curriculum development in the ELT context and is precious for improving curriculum reform. However, more research needs to be undertaken to investigate PE as a part of the English curriculum development for young learners’ context in Indonesian elementary schools. This case study research aims to scrutinize the teachers’ voices on PE centered on the challenges, perceptions, and expectations of the English to young learners (EYL) curriculum development. A semi-structured interview with three English teachers chosen by purposive sampling in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia, was employed to gather the data, and the collected data were examined thematically. The results showed that EYL teachers believe PE is vital to conduct since it can encourage curriculum development. They deal with challenges in designing and developing the curriculum related to lesson planning, materials development, instructional methods, and assessment practices. Teachers expected the EYL program to be adjusted with a suitable curriculum, such as contextualized, character-based, and school-based curricula. The study suggests that PE should be performed regularly to gain insightful reforms for the EYL curriculum, so teachers, schools, and stakeholders can advance the quality of the English program at Indonesian elementary schools.

The number of NCAA international student-athletes (ISAs) on US college campuses has increased to upwards of 20,000. This current study sought to investigate their transition experiences into colleges, based on the ISA transition adjustment model. More specifically, this study sought to better understand how recent changes in the NCAA have impacted the ISA population and if the antecedent factors in the transition adjustment model (personal, inter-personal, perceptual, and cultural distance) still represent the best indicators of successful transition for ISAs. To conduct this study, semi-structured interviews were completed with 10 current and former female Division I ISAs from six separate schools and seven countries. The results from this study suggest the core antecedents of the model – personal, inter-personal, perceptual, and cultural distance – were all still relevant. However, the factors included among these antecedents have shifted over time, with this study finding the importance of faculty and students (inter-personal) and nutrition (cultural distance) as significant factors in the transition of ISAs into US colleges. The results provide insights to administrators of US college athletics regarding how to help international student-athletes’ adaptation.
... This research method examines contemporary phenomena in their everyday context and uses various research instruments and data sources (Yin, 1994). The case study is often successfully used in the context of qualitative research but is not limited to this; case studies can be designed to include quantitative evaluations (Yin, 1993). The phase of data analysis should overlap with that of data collection in order to be able to make possible improvements or close data gaps. ...

Service robots increasingly work as assistants or advisors within socio-technical systems. To date, there is no descriptive management model that considers robots as part of the organizational system that can be organized, planned and controlled at the different system levels of human-robot interaction. Beer's Viable System Model (VSM) provides a suitable basis as it examines organization at different system levels. Based on a case study, we adapt the VSM and add to the literature what the role of a service robot is and how it can be managed in the VSM as a "co-worker".

The purpose of this study is to analyze how dynamic capabilities are integrated into open innovation to support firms pursuing innovation. Dynamic capabilities enable firms to adjust to emerging changes through redesigning resource configuration. Nevertheless, how dynamic capabilities are integrated into open innovation for obtaining external knowledge and resources has not been observed in previous studies. Utilizing seven small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with various degrees of knowledge and technology intensity as subjects, this qualitative study identified a typology of pathways for integrating dynamic capabilities into open innovation. This study found that firms’ internal resources coupled with complementary assets obtained from open innovation determine what strategies to deploy and what capabilities are needed to execute the strategies. The fit among firms’ resources, strategies, capabilities and emerging business environment is not serendipitous, but rather it must be designed and supported by collective efforts from participants across organizations. In other words, the nature of knowledge and degree of technology adoption determine how sensing, seizing and performing are applied in each phase of open innovation. The main drawback of qualitative study is that it cannot cover a large number of subjects, although it can scrutinize an abundant number of detailed data. Future research can analyze the findings of this study using a survey method covering a large number of firms from various industries so that generalizability can be assured.

Sustainability and ethical consumption have emerged as essential topics globally in the carbon-neutral era. The adoption of eco-friendly production and distribution methods have been prominent in the fashion industry as well. This study performed a qualitative case study analysis based on a literature review and in-depth expert interviews. The search yielded ten keywords reflecting how value producers pursue sustainable fashion. These keywords are “eco-friendly”, “recycled”, “vegan”, “upcycled”, “zero waste”, “local production”, “fair trade”, “women-owned”, “gives back” and “animal protection”. The values are divided into five core environmental values and five core social values. Based on in-depth interviews with domestic sustainable fashion experts, the core values and detailed standards of sustainable fashion were specified and presented as practical values. This qualitative study, utilised interviews, and document analysis to collect data. The target population consisted of purposively chosen chief information officers and records practitioners from the national government departments in South Africa. A total of ten participants were interviewed and data were analysed thematically. The study made several findings such as that the government was hesitant to subscribe to the privately-owned cloud due to security concerns such as attack of a physical host, bankruptcy, cross-border jurisdiction, sovereignty, access to information, and data loss, as well as the absence of legislation on cloud storage. The study recommends for the enactment of cloud storage legislation and encourage the storage of digital records on a cloud within the borders of South African virtual space.

Running a school is a complex task that entails for the directive staff, the development of skills for school management, at least in the dimensions: organizational, pedagogical-didactic, community and administrative, so in the duty to be, who is appointed principal of a school must have extensive experience and a suitable professional profile for the development of this function, because in their hands is the responsibility of leading the work team to guarantee the right to education of girls, boys and adolescents, especially in the most disadvantaged and historically vulnerable contexts. However, the reality of teachers who are in "commissioned principals" is far from being "ideal" due to the way in which they perform this role, because they are generally recently incorporated into the educational system and because it occurs in places with adverse social and economic conditions. The methodology used corresponds to a qualitative approach inspired by hermeneutics, where the narrative was used as a strategy to analyze and interpret the experiences of a teacher commissioned as principal in a multigrade school, a technique complemented with the use of in-depth interviews; Based on the results, it is identified that it is necessary to promote policies and actions to strengthen the managerial profile of the commissioned teacher, since although the effort and performance made by this type of teacher-principals is enormous, adequate advice and support would improve The quality of education that is offered in these schools is considerable.

The present study focuses on the implement of online learning in special education and how Information and Telecommunications Technology being used to strengthen and support the achievement of learning and the learning goals at special needs junior high school students (SMPLB) Jambi. The research method used in this study is a case study where the researchers observe how the patterns and processes of online education in the learning of SMPLB students, distributing questionnaires on the use of ICT to the teachers, interviews with parents/guardians of the students, and interviews with special junior high school teacher Sri Soedewi Maschun Sofyan, S.H Jambi. The results of the research indicate that the students in special needs schools have difficulty in obtaining technology that suits with their needs in learning. The learning process cannot be carried out as expected because the teachers have difficulty in making technology-based learning materials for the students, especially for students with the deaf and the blind. Reading and writing skills are also very limited, and the student learning is very low because the online method greatly limits opportunities for direct interaction between the students and the teachers. The involvement of parental assistance is also very low because the parents do not understand how to aid with children in online learning.

The findings from the analysis of higher education institutions (HEIs’) contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation, with an emphasis on Fiji and Indonesia, are summarized in this conclusion. Through research, instruction, and community involvement, HEIs are essential catalysts for sustainable development, as the study emphasizes. HEIs have become essential venues for developing climate-resilient practices in both situations, connecting localized solutions with global knowledge frameworks. The cooperation between HEIs and local stakeholders in tackling the distinct environmental issues that each country faces—such as deforestation in Indonesia and rising sea levels in Fiji—is highlighted by key findings. Both nations show that HEIs can significantly advance policy frameworks, create green technologies, and raise a new generation of climate-conscious leaders despite having different socioeconomic and environmental contexts. The conclusion also highlights essential obstacles, such as a lack of funding, gaps in infrastructure, and the requirement for more inclusive governance structures to increase the impact of HEIs. It demands more funding for research, improved international collaboration, and a more thorough incorporation of traditional knowledge systems into academic curricula. In the end, the case studies confirm that HEIs are crucial for creating resilient societies in the face of growing climate challenges because they are hubs for learning and strategic change agents.

Creativity is rapidly becoming central to scholarly discourse, research, and education practice. It is central to modern society and forms the basis for innovation and progress. In the current era, creative thinking skills (CTS) are pivotal skills one must possess to compete, succeed, and participate in the global economy. Therefore, the Ministry of Education must ensure the cultivation of such skills in today's classrooms to produce the kind of learners that will be the perfect fit for societal needs around the globe. As such, Creative Thinking Skills development is one of the core objectives of the South African Curriculum and Technology Education (TE), encouraging learners to be creative and innovative. The study examined how Technology teachers enact Creative Thinking Skills in their classrooms. The study was based on a qualitative research approach complemented by the case study research design. Purposive sampling was used to sample four Technology Education teachers as study participants. Data was collected through interviews and complemented by observations and document analysis concerning four Technology teachers. The study discovered that although the design process (DP) is available to support them, teachers still struggle to adequately articulate the idea of creative thinking and what it entails. The study suggests that to support learners, technology teachers should engage themselves in a lesson study approach with colleagues in nearby districts to receive continuous pedagogical training that will help them understand the nature and components of creative thinking.

In this chapter, we consider several theoretical paradigms which have emancipation of the suppressed and subjugated as their focal agenda. We follow-up our discussion of these diverse theoretical paradigms with an evaluation of their usefulness in deconstructing, examining, and comprehending entrepreneurship as a socio-economic emancipation strategy. Additionally, we also address methodological concerns which might arise in emancipatory underlined entrepreneurship projects and identify appropriate research methods. The objective of the chapter is to provide the readers with several theoretical and methodological alternatives when considering entrepreneurship projects with emancipatory connotations.

Keywords: Generic settlement pattern, Bengal Delta settlement, Vernacular, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Climate adaptation

The article's goal is to examine the value of having leaders who uphold moral principles and serve as excellent role models. The Mahavakya leadership philosophy stresses that leaders should practice what they preach, and its application can lead to a deep examination of one's values and the modification of one's behavior. The article's main focus is on a review of the theoretical frameworks supporting this study and values-based leadership literature. The following leadership, theoretical framework, and leadership theories are reviewed in the article: servant leadership, genuine leadership, ethical/moral leadership, transformational leadership, and ethical/moral leadership. The goal of the literature review is to critically analyze the major cornerstone ideas that support values-based leadership in addition to providing insights into it. Authentic leadership, ethical leadership, transformative leadership, and principled leadership are the three main philosophies of values-based leadership. Strong principles, morality, and ethics are essential for a leader to possess. The idea of values-based leadership, which has been pervasive in the literature and permeates both management and leadership, has come under more attention as a result of this argument.

Records and archives are the footprints of any organisation due to the value of their information. In South Africa, the records and archives are governed by the National Archives and Record Service of South Africa Act No. 43 of 1996, as amended under the auspices of the National Archives and Record Services of South Africa. The current archival holding is compatible with paper, film, and audio formats as provided in the Act. This study sought to explore the strategies for developing digital infrastructure that would rescue records and archives from a stagnant state in the Government of South Africa. This being an interpretive study, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and augmented with content analysis. In view that this was a case study, the population comprised 10 chief information officers and records practitioners from national government departments of South Africa. The collected data were thematically analysed. This study established that the current infrastructure of record-keeping contributes heavily to the stagnant situation of records because only those in the proximity of the archival holdings can access the records by visiting the premises. This study also argues that if the current infrastructure prevails, records and archives will continue to be stagnant. In view of the emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution, the study recommends that records and archives can be saved from the stagnant state by developing the infrastructure for cloud storage within the borders of South Africa.

This book covers original research on the implementation of open educational practices through the use of open educational resources at the university level. The emphasis on open education in this book is on contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning specifically within a South African milieu. The envisaged chapters cover conceptual and review research and empirical work focussing on open educational practices and the use of renewable assessments. The work starts off with an overview of an institutional-wide open education project that prompted the research followed by research on open education in terms of various modules in the health science, music education, law, philosophy, dietetics, anthropology, French language learning, journalism and political science. There is a clear gap in the literature on open education in terms of open educational practices, specifically in terms of contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning in a South African context. Despite the existence of some general works on open education in terms of policy, social justice and open textbooks, this book will be unique in exploring the intersections of openness, specifically with contextualisation, student agency and self-directedness.

This study was undertaken to analyse the educational experiences of Grade four language learners in selected rural primary schools of Zambezi District of Zambia. As a qualitative study, the descriptive research design was used to provide a detailed analysis of the phenomena under investigation. Data was collected through interviews and lesson observation in the target schools. The data was analysed thematically by grouping related data together into main themes. The population comprised all primary schools, all primary teachers, and all primary pupils of Zambezi District. The sample size comprised four primary schools, four primary administrators, four primary teachers, four parents and forty pupils from the four primary schools bringing the total participants to fifty-two (52). Purposive sampling was used in the selection of the teachers while convenience sampling was used to select the pupils. The objectives of the study were to; (i) establish the educational experiences of Grade four language learners in selected schools of Zambezi district, (ii) ascertain the views of teachers on the educational experiences of Grade four pupils in Zambezi district, (iii) determine the views of parents on the educational experiences of Grade four pupils in Zambezi district of Zambia, and (iv) establish pupils' and teachers' experiences on instructional experiences for Grade four classes in Zambezi district of Zambia. The findings of the study were that learners faced diverse educational challenges ranging from inadequate teachers, lack of teaching and learning materials or having outdated materials, negative attitude of some teachers towards work as they were not available for class at times, distance to schools, family pressure with their emphasis on traditional education and bullying by fellow pupils. The study recommended that head teachers should be monitoring their teachers effectively. The government should build more schools to reduce the long distances that learners cover. District educational officials should sensitize parents in rural schools to balance modern and traditional education.

Current theories of how individuals in poor neighborhoods access information and resources have focused primarily on social ties, with concepts such as social isolation dominating discussion. But these theories ignore that individuals often access resources through interorganizational ties. The author suggests that an important role of neighborhood institutions such as churches and childcare centers is to serve as resource brokers —organi- zations that have ties to businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies rich in resources and that provide their patrons with access to these resources. This article presents a set of propositions to understand how and why neighborhood institutions broker resources and applies these propositions to a case study of 16 childcare centers in high poverty neighborhoods in New York City. The author argues that resource brokers may be understood as interorganizationally networked, loosely coupled entities whose actors respond to pressures of multiple origins, including professional norms and state mandates. He shows that, through mechanisms that vary in their for- mality and staff dependence, childcare centers provide access to a remarkable array of resources from external organizations. Findings suggest that resource access among the poor should be understood as an organizationally embedded process, and that true disadvantage may result not merely from living in poor neighborhoods, but from not participating in well-connected neighborhood institutions.
