In the academic setting, theology examines the intellectual structure and system of a corpus of religious writings and rites. The study of religion analyses the data of religion, the texts in words and artifacts. Theology articulates the systematic consequences of those facts, the generative logic. The study of theology is particular to the study of a given religious tradition; philosophy of religion asks questions concerning religious truth claims in general. Theology of Judaism seeks evidence of the interior logic that imparts coherence to entire structure of distinct systems of that religion adumbrated in the written documents of Judaism(s). In the context of a Judaic system, that requires the identification of norms that all authorities within that system affirm.

This antagonism, because it commits itself to the matter of determinability (the world), is inseparable from a breaking open of the world’s immanent potencies. The chapter argues that such breaking-open leads Yoder to an affirmation of disaccord that converges with Deleuze’s interstitial difference. It argues, furthermore, that Yoder’s account of the temporality of this process converges with Deleuze’s own theory of time.

Christianity as a whole is a historical religion. That is, its truth claims are based on the historical reality of certain events, such as the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In addition, each Christian denomination is bound to a particular view or range of views of Christian history that tie into its reason for existence. [Show full abstract] Catholics and Orthodox, to some measure of apostasy and reformation back to New Testament Chris- tianity among Protestants. Latter-day Saints believe there was a total apostasy from New Testament Chris- tianity, and a complete restoration of primitive Chris- tianity was necessary, although we believe elements of the true faith from all past dispensations have been included, as well as things which have been "kept hid from before the foundation of the world." 2 To some de- gree, these propositions can be tested. My intent here is to outline a brief historical argument for the proposition that the Latter-day Saints represent, in the main, a restoration of primitive Christianity. I am going to do that by showing that in some of the most important areas of theology, early trends in Christian doctrine point from something very like LDS doctrine and toward the doctrines of later Christianity. Finally, I will examine how different Christian traditions try to deal with these facts, and show that the meaning we attach to early Christian doctrinal development follows quite naturally, while other interpretations are usually very forced.

The “New Black Theology” and the Dream of Post-Racialization

I contend that in order to have a chance of bringing the still mostly White theological academy along on their post-racializing journey, the “new Black theologians” should consider refining at least three elements of their theories: their use of conventional theological methodology, their approach to Judaism, and their treatment of gender. In conclusion, I reflect on the continuing relevance for White theologians of traditional Black and womanist theologies.

[Show full abstract] revealed truths, bringing to light the non-contradictory separation established by the author. The Cartesian theory of faith leads to the refutation of the existence of a Cartesian philosophy of religion: there is no rational analysis of religion in the work of Descartes, in particular because of the obscurity of the faith and the separation between philosophy and theology. However, in a second part, this paper proposes another approach to the problem by focusing on the origin of the revealed truths: these come from the Bible. The article points out a tension in the normative approach of the sacred text. Descartes oscillates between two positions. In some cases, he holds the Church as the sole judge of Scripture. In others, he takes philosophy as a guide to read the Bible, directing his interpretation of the sacred text according to the truths of his philosophical system. This paper is based on the themes of the greatness of the universe and the love of God: these cases: while illustrating a philosophical approach of the sacred text, could open the way to a Cartesian philosophy of religion.

In the philosophical field rational argument conducted according to the established rules of logic is the fundamental tool in the pursuit of truth and understanding or for the clarification of problems, ideas and concepts; in Judaism, rational, legal argument pursued according to recognized principles and processes is the most highly commended path to encounter and engagement with God. Moreover, within this same religious tradition, ‘holy argument’ embraces not only argument about God, about His nature (theology), His ways (theodicy) and His will (halakhah), but also argument with God, putting God on trial and taking Him to task as One who is Himself bound and judged by that same Torah that Israel is obligated to obey. The high value placed upon study and the exercise of the intellect in the Jewish tradition is well known; it is not only a mitzvah and an act of worship but a form of imitatio Dei, for God Himself engages in the study of Torah. But the mode of study in Judaism and the form in which the intellect is exercised is characteristically that of argument and debate, the quintessential activity of philosophy and philosophers.

[Show full abstract] theological projects. This paper intends to question this assumption on the basis of recent works both on the historical Jesus and on Synoptic theology. It suggests that this verse not only fits very well with the theological and literary project of the Synoptics’ authors but can also shed some light on Jesus’ theology of creation. The way Jesus articulates his own special relationship to ‘his father’ with the human relationship of God's children to ‘their father’ is coherent with the theology implied by this logion.

Paul’s claim of the impossibility of righteousness through the law depends upon a disjunction of law and covenant which appears both logically incoherent and radically un-Jewish. The solution, I propose, lies ... [Show full abstract] in a crucial but neglected aspect of Jewish covenant theology. According to a widespread strain within Jewish thought, apart from the grace and forgiveness found within the covenantal relationship, there is no one who is righteous or who can stand before God’s judgement. Through echo of Psalm 143:2, Paul’s pivotal formulation within Romans 3:19–20 explicitly draws upon this feature of Jewish covenantal thought. Accordingly, the ‘works of the law’ in Romans do not refer to the law within the gracious framework of the covenant (a covenant which in Paul’s thought was operative throughout Israel’s history, and had now reached its climax in Christ), but rather to the law’s observance apart from the covenant and its promise of mercy in Jesus Christ. The distinction between the law’s fulfilment considered within or apart from the covenantal relationship of faith is the key which unlocks the coherence and profoundly Jewish character of Paul’s theology of the law.
