Abstract

This study deals with the linguistic study of texts as a way of understanding how language functions in its immensely varied range of social contexts. The authors adopt a functional approach to language, in which the different registers or functional varieties of a language are explained by reference to the different contexts in which they occur. Their analysis reveals how, on the one hand, each text is unique, while on the other, the way a text is organized and the kinds of coherence it displays are closely related to the place and the value that it has in its social and cultural environment.

... What remains is the writer's intention (p.5). Halliday and Hasan (1989) argue that language, similar to human culture, is a system of meaning. Due to this similarity, language is described as a social-semiotic system (p. ...
... One main feature of a wellformed text is coherence that contributes to the hanging together of the text. As suggested by Halliday and Hasan (1989), a text is said to be coherent when what was said before prepares the reader to what is said next (p. 32). ...

The semantic categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1989) When the Motor Cars Act wa before the House it was suggested that these authorities should b given the right to mak representations to the centra authorities and that right wa conceded (a comma is missing afte authorities) Some languages witness variation in the use of letters with dots. For example, Ottoman alphabet is divided into heavy letters ‫ح(‬ ، ‫خ‬ ‫ص،‬ ‫ض،‬ ‫ط،‬ ‫ظ،‬ ‫ع،‬ ‫غ،‬ ‫)ق،‬ and the rest are all light letters. ...

Study focused to investigate the use of specific lexical items to comment on sports in social media applications. For this, the application of Facebook was taken to observe comments of Pakistani cricket supporters. The study is designed to first identify, then discuss actual and situational meanings of semantic structures that have been solely employed for cricket matches. It was possible with the adoption of the model of analyzing the semantics of lexis given by Geeraert's (2009). The project is designed on descriptive (survey). Corpus from the commentary section on Facebook was taken that comprised 4 chats on Facebook and (24) chats on sub-pages of Facebook. They were all coded from 1-24 as (C1 to C-24). The following chats have been carefully extracted to fulfill the purpose of the study in the platform groups of Facebook. They were visualized under principles to find the semantics of lexis through the proposed model (2009) of Geeraert. The findings of the project revealed that Pakistani supporters of Cricket have employed peculiar words and structures that verified specific interactions in the sports domain. Following phrases and words were possible to get interpreted with defined context. This has been concluded in the present study that chats on the Facebook application by Pakistani supporters of cricket have used the majority of sentences that were aligned to sports' register and could only be understood as well employed by fans of cricket. This contribution tends to suggest in the end that following the framework of the following study, many studies on the relationship of sports with the use of language can be presented by research scholars in the future from different parts of the World with the employment of theory on the register of language by Halliday (1978).

... The semiotic concept implies the study of signs and social, referring to Ferdinand de Saussure, the science of symbols, sign systems, and meanings. For Halliday and Hasan, there are two layers of social semiotic analysis: text and contexts of the situation (Halliday & Hasan, 1989). First, Text is understood as meaning referring to words and sentences, commonly called semantic units. ...

This article focuses on mediating da'wah content through YouTube, packaged in the Islamic concept of wasathiyah. The rampant phenomenon of da'wah content leads to radicals & fundamentals, and even terror on social media causes public unrest. The public space is a space for equality, the emergence of discussions of public issues, and turning public activities and points into inclusive cultural commodities. This study uses a qualitative research method through social semiotic analysis’ Halliday of the object of research on the Jedanulis (based on specific content YouTube) and content analysis of the audience's comments to determine the behavior of users using Netlytic. This is done to determine the audience’s response (as a social media user) to the communicator Husain Jafar Alhadar. The representation of wasathiyah da'wah concludes with a point, which is a source. Ustaz is an actor who conveys divine teachings and promotes a positive image of Islam through inclusive practice in the public sphere. What they get as a message becomes a mirror for the listener. Ustaz is the message itself. Whether faith is good or bad is determined mainly by them. That Ustaz, including Ulama, is not mocking the ummah but inviting the ummah.

The present study set out to investigate how discourse features contribute to building intertextual relations of news headlines reporting on the same news story. Using the theoretical model of Generic Structure Potential (Hasan, 1996), thirty-nine headlines of online news reporting on the story related to the cropped photo of the Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate, were analysed. The results showed that intertextuality in the headlines is achieved through features that include reference to individuals, reference to country, reference to ethnicity, use of role label, reference to emotion, attention to language, use of evaluative language, reference to agency, reference to event, immediacy, quoting, and alluding. It was also revealed that, while some discourse features co-occurred, others were in a complementary distribution.

This paper outlines the general influence of Halliday’s (1994, 2014) systemic functional linguistics on TESOL curriculum. Halliday’s explanation of language as a social semiotic and language learning as learning to mean has been applied internationally in genre and text- based teaching. The concept of register in systemic functional linguistics describes linguistic variation of texts for the expression of different meanings. SFL studies document teachers’ explicit instruction in the lexicogrammatical construction of text types linked to function and social context. The explicitness informs students’ decision-making for formulation of meanings in different text types. Reference is made to SFL applied in teacher education. There is mention of the relevance of SFL to Australia’s concern with literacy standards in education.

It means that the context of our language usage influences the judgments we make about language systems. ...

The text-based integrated approach, which originated from Halliday's (1978) theory of language as social semiotic, views that people use language to produce meaning. A text, according to Halliday and Hasan (1989), is a semantic unit that can be spoken, written, visual, or multimodal. There are few publications in Asia that explain text-based learning by offering a text-based learning cycle adapted from the urrent models, together with learning design processes, teaching resources, and assessment rubrics to measure students' text production. To echo this calling, a book entitled Designing English Text-based Instruction with Principled Eclecticism was compiled. As the title says, this book helps students improve their communication skills by studying a wide range of texts, with teachings that focus on all four language skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening).
... The gendered stylistic variations in compliment use in the current study have not been previously described in the earlier research, which might be due to the different functions of the compliments that the male and female judges would like to accentuate in the talent competitions on TV. The function of paying compliment is either ideational, i.e., to express cognitive perceptions and judgments, or interpersonal, i.e., to make the addressee feel good (Halliday, 1978;Halliday and Hasan, 1985). In the context of talent competitions, it is hard or even impossible to determine whether the compliments addressed by the judges to redress their criticisms in their evaluations are purely ideational or interpersonal (Johnson and Roen, 1992). ...

This study investigated whether and how the gender of the judges in the TV talent competitions affects the pragmatics of the compliments in their evaluative comments addressed to the contest participants. The explicitness of the compliments, the distribution of positive semantic carriers and intensifiers, the personal focus of the compliments, and the supportive discursive moves in the male and female judges’ complimenting speech events were qualitatively analysed and statistically compared. Results, however, do not support the general belief that women’s complimenting style is more socioemotional than men’s. The function of the compliments that the judges would like to accentuate in the formal institutional setting appears to have a greater impact on their linguistic performances than their gender role. The male and female judges’ complimenting styles seem to be strategic manoeuvres to create their preferred social image in the public media discourse.

Language reflects the environment and culture, and it also represents a dialectic expression between the author and the social condition. The language of the Quran undergoes a dialectic process along with various factors around, by socio-historical (asbāb al-nuzūl) and situational (asbāb al-dhurūf) context. This study aimed to discover the contextual and situational background, referring to the diction, language style, or euphemism of the Quran regarding the relationship of husband and wife. It employed sociolinguistic approach as language was a prominent medium for cultural heritage discovery and apprehension. It found that the Quran exercised the use of adjective, verb, and verb phrase to demonstrate expressive and referential function, and to avoid taboo words. It also pointed out that Arabic society in the pre-Islamic era geographically and culturally lived within an unconducive environment. They enjoyed nomadic lifestyle, unwilling to be bounded by rules. Therefore, the Quran used subtle dictions when it came to the topic of spouse relationship. the Quran employed 18 types of diction in 8 surahs, mainly discussing about: 1) disobeying commands, 2) telling the story of the Muslims’ habits in the past, 3) giving suggestion after enforcing prohibition, and 4) providing explanation about women in nature. The subtle diction was intended to avoid any filthy imagination and lust among the Arabs back then.

Language is not only used as the means of communication, but also the device of achieving dominance. This article aims at describing and analyzing the real meaning of bharata and revealing misinterpretation on the meaning of bharata by Buton Kingdom for political dominance device on four surrounding kingdoms: Muna, Tiworo, Kaledupa, and Kulisusu in the 17th – 20th centuries. The study was designed descriptive qualitativey with four steps of framework: (1) exploring data, (2) data verification, (3) analysis, and (4) writing results of analysis. Data were analyzed by applying Wodak’s critical discourse analysis approach (CDA). Results of the analysis concluded the real meaning of bharata is “front area and center of battle”. The term of bharata was firstly acquainted by Laki Laponto, the king of Buton at the beginning of 16th century when he organized military alliance by involving the four surrounding kingdoms to face Ternate’s threaten. Since at the beginning of 17th century people of Butonese misinterpreted the meaning of bharata subjectively for political interest. Buton kingdom then established their misinterpretation instituonally and performed hegemony to the four surrounding kingdoms by the assistance of Dutch after welcoming and signing bilateral coalition with Dutch at the beginning of 17th century.

With respect to language, systemic functional theory (Halliday & Hasan, 1986) posits a close relationship between language and its contexts of use. As such, language users make choices from a reservoir of meaning-making potential available in the culture according to the demands of the context and the individual's repertoire of resources. ...

This chapter investigates the dynamic life of ideas in online discussion by revisiting an earlier study and reflecting upon Alexander’s conceptualisation of dialogic teaching. The study sought to address the challenge of how to engage students in productive online discussion, which was motivated by our experiences of shifting from face-to-face to online modes of discussion in university courses. The co-construction of knowledge in online interactions was understood from the perspectives of systemic functional linguistics and sociocultural theory. Combining these frameworks allowed us to explore the dialogue from the broad perspective of teaching and learning as social activity, to close attention to the unfolding language choices. It also enabled us to consider the development of ideas over time. In this chapter we present strategies used to guide online discussion which show links to Alexander’s dialogic teaching principles. Our analysis of two discussion forums guided by these strategies identified practices and their attendant linguistic realizations, adding detail to Alexander’s construct of repertoire. This chapter also illustrated dialogic principles as they occurred in an online setting, and in so doing offers a translation of dialogic pedagogy to assist educators to design and deliver online learning in higher education.

Most of us pay attention to intra-paragraph coherence: the idea that the sentences within a paragraph should logically develop a single idea. But we forget, or we struggle to master inter-paragraph coherence: the idea that paragraphs should be arranged so that our argument develops logically. Proximity isn’t always enough to signal to readers how paragraphs are building on one another to create a compelling argument. Readers may still end up having to infer how one paragraph is linked to the next, and when they can’t make those inferences (or they make them incorrectly) coherence suffers. This Writer’s Craft offers techniques to enhance inter-paragraph coherence more consciously so that readers don’t fall through the cracks between our paragraphs.

Using perspectives on language and language learning in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), including the traditional cognitive orientation, sociocultural theory orientation, and critical theoretical orientation as theoretical frameworks, this study critically analyzes 78 papers published from 2014 to 2020 in Chinese as a Second Language—The Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CSL), a leading journal that is devoted exclusively to the study of Chinese language, culture, and pedagogy. This study investigates how the teaching and learning of Chinese language and culture has been conceptualized and enacted in the field of SLA and explores factors that contributed to frustration, dissatisfaction, or criticisms in this field (e.g., Lantolf and Genung, 2002; Li and Duff, 2008, 2018; Thorne, 2005). Additionally, this study raises awareness of the value of sociocultural and critical perspectives on language teaching and learning (e.g., Douglas Fir Group, 2016; Fairclough, 1992; Halliday and Hasan, 1985; New London Group, 1996; Vygotsky, 1978), suggesting more critical and sociocultural-oriented research to support learning Chinese as a world language in the context of globalization.

TICs. Ferramentas cognitivas. Pensamento computacional.

The movie industry in India has a distinctive effect on their audience, which is rather unique when compared to the various influencing kinds of messages that are portrayed through different forms of media. Perceptual immediacy is often viewed in the audiences while they watch a movie or even when a spark is formed in their psyche just by the visuals that they see on a movie poster. And so, while creating a movie or even constructing a movie poster, the ability to make it relevant to the viewers is carefully considered by the creators of this medium. This paper aims to study whether Malayalam movie posters visually construct meaning and whether they can influence the financial success of a film. The sample for this research was three Malayalam movie posters: Pulimurugan, Kayamkulam Kochunni, and Lucifer. The methodological approach for this study was conducted by using Kress and van Leeuwen's visual social semiotic method.

Today, banks have welcomed wireless and mobile technology into their boardroom to offer their customers the freedom to pay bills, planning payments while stuck in traffic jams, to receive updates on the various marketing efforts while present at a party to provide more personal and intimate relationships. This paper examines consumer adoption of a new electronic payment service as mobile banking and the factors influencing the adoption of mobile banking in South Rajasthan. A sample size of 100 account holders with different banks was taken for the study and random sampling method was used. Both primary & secondary data’s were used for the study. Primary objective of this study is to-  To study the adoption of Mobile banking services by Customers in Southern Rajasthan.  To identify factors influencing the Adoption and Usage of Mobile banking in South Rajasthan. The paper is based on Exploratory Research. This research is both quantitative and qualitative. This research is based on the data collected through “Questionnaire” with Mobile banking User and Non-user. Total period for this study was forty days. Results indicate that consumers get disheartened by the complicated functions while accessing the mobile banking services which lead them to the dissatisfaction level as no proper guidance is to be provided to them. The fact is that the factor risk and security are the most considerable significant factors for banking service adoption, and particularly in relation to `new' electronic environment. The result indicate that consumers are serious about the risk of conducting banking via a wireless channel, measured in terms of overall security and trustworthiness of the services offered. However, because of various problems in m- banking system this is not widely accepted by South Rajasthan bank customers

In this paper, we explore a strategy for teaching undergraduate American Sign Language/ English interpreting students about discourse types and genre boundaries. To do so, we describe a project-based learning approach employed with a cohort of second-year students , detail the assessment method, and analyze students' work. Specifically, the project required students to read a scholarly paper in the field of Interpreting Studies and create an American Sign Language video-recorded reformulation of the paper in a different discourse genre (e.g., a television news broadcast or a product infomercial). The findings indicate that, despite exhibiting a concerning lack of American Sign Language proficiency, students demonstrated remarkable creativity and critical thinking abilities. Students created video-recorded reformulations that incorporated salient points from their assigned articles while also applying principles of discourse analysis learned throughout the semester. Taken together, the findings suggest that applied discourse analysis projects and inter-genre reformulation activities can be used as a part of valuable pre-translation and translation training.

The novel coronavirus (SAR-COV-2) and its attendant respiratory disease, COVID-19, said to have originated in Wuhan, China in December, 2019 has become a global concern with far-reaching impact on all facets of human life. Its impact on the English language can be seen in the emergence of new forms of expressions, extension of the meaning of existing words and the resuscitation of hitherto not commonly used expressions. A number of these innovations and usages affect the English language generally, yet language use is context-bound revealing the cultural realities of its users and their environment so that language at all times exhaustively catalogues the things, events and processes in its environment of use (Carrol, 1966:102). This study adopts the Functionalist Approach to investigate the linguistic impact of COVID-19 discourse on the Nigerian variety of the English language using data from Nairaland , an online Nigerian forum. It establishes that COVID-19 pandemic has informed new Englishes in Nigerian English by way of morphemic coinages, phrasal restructuring, syntactic composition, semantic broadening, lexical resuscitation and acronymic coinages.

This research investigated the effect of Project-based learning on students’ speaking ability. This was a mix research, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative was used to describe the implementation of the project based learning in Accounting Study Program students. The quantitative research used was a pre-experimental research with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design to find the effect of project based learning on the students’ speaking ability. There was a single sample, 35 students, of the population (1st to 4th semester Accounting Study Program Students of Universitas Potensi Utama). The qualitative data were collected by using interview, observation, and documentation. The quantitative data were collected by using tests, pre-test and post-test. Since this study was intended to find the effect of the Project-Based Learning toward students’ speaking ability, the quantitative data were analyzed statistically by paired sample t-test by using IBM SPSS 22 for Windows. The result of analysis showed that there was a significant effect of Project-Based Learning on the students’ speaking ability. It was an effective method in teaching speaking because it improves students’ speaking ability, build students’ team work skills, increase students’ problem solving skill, and stimulates students to be active, communicative, creative, and innovative. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to be applied in the teaching speaking.

This paper analyses part of the discourse of the ongoing independence debate between France and New Caledonia by combining Systemic Functional Linguistics and Pragma-Dialectics. It is shown how two politicians, as representatives of a more dominant social group, attempt to influence and change the social representations of the Kanak minority in order to obtain a preferred outcome by persuasively arguing their case through the use of both shared and inferred knowledge. It will become clear that tacit knowledge seems to be taken for granted by the French protagonists and that the negotiation process does not appear to constitute a cooperative dialogue. The paper aims to clarify this process in order to demonstrate how highly incongruent goals and values on both sides can create an intrinsic opposition. A quantitative systemic functional analysis is integrated as linguistic evidence into a qualitative Critical Discourse Analysis to reconstruct and critically evaluate the arguments of three political actors, as representatives of the most significant discourse communities involved in the debate: independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou, former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and nickel magnate Jacques Lafleur. Shared knowledge appears to be wielded as a rhetorical ploy by the latter two to achieve free association with France.

This study aimed to identify linguistic etiquette for serving food at manjau maju events by reviewing speech rules, such as what matters are discussed, how to talk about serving food, when it is someone’s turn to speak, when to be silent, what variety of languages are used, who the speaker is, and to whom the conversation was addressed. The study used a sociopragmatic approach. The results of the study show that to serve food (kekuk), the speaker must comply with the stages of speech, namely knowing the customary title (adok) their speech partner bears, asking permission to serve food, and inviting the speech partner to enjoy the food. In addition to the stages, the contents of the speech are also conveyed through linguistic elements that have signs of politeness and a variety of local people’s refined language. The speaker who asks permission to serve food is an unmarried man. Meanwhile, those who accept the conversation are women who can speak according to the rules of the local community and generally hold the old customary title (adok tuha). These findings complement the existing body of linguistic etiquette literature.

The role of cohesive ties in text is the topic of this paper. More specifically, this study focuses on the notion of cohesiveness and transitional indicators in literary texts. The paper argues that it is easier to understand literary texts if one pays attention to how the different parts of the language work together. When an author uses transitional cues to convey a particular notice, readers are effectively kept engaged. The reader plays a significant player in the game of literary writing process. Text cohesion analysis shows the way which a particular piece of information is read and interpreted. This study examines the utilization of grammatical cohesive ties in Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Thus, Great Expectations is analysed in terms of its linguistic cohesion based on the model selected for this purpose which is Hallidy and Hasan's (1976/ 1985) model which has been proved to be a successful tool for literary discourse studies. The results indicate that there are skilful and powerful cohesive strategies employed in the novel by Dickens. In turn, this chiefly operates in the achievement of the novel as a whole and plays a vital role to its overall coherence.

The competent use of the specific language of school subjects is fundamental for successful learning and teaching in school. For a language-sensitive design of lessons and empirical foundation of didactic and methodical concepts, knowledge of how students read a text is needed as well as evidence-based knowledge of formal and functional aspects of subject-specific language. A corpus analysis confirms that the passive is a prototypical construction in chemistry textbooks. Thus the competent handling of those sentences is a relevant aspect of subject-specific language competence. The verbs used in the passive sentences in books included in the corpus are predominantly morphologically complex, and can be indicated as chemistry-specific lexis, e.g. related to the sub-microscopic level. Furthermore, they are commonly used in conjunction with abstract agents. On the other hand, these verbs are also encountered to students in everyday (i.e. non-subject-specific) contexts but in these contexts they diverge semantically and are commonly used in conjunction with a human agent. Therefore, the function of the passive sentences differs: While passive sentences with a human agent allow an expression of anonymised actions, the passive sentences with abstract agents enable the verbalisation of abstract processes. The distribution of those functional distinction differs between school subjects and contexts. Abstract agents in passive sentences can support the maintenance of pre-instructional concepts of students, especially if the verbs are not obviously specific for the context of chemistry. Therefore, a specific language-education for school subjects is needed which includes the analysis of formal and functional aspects. The results of the corpus analysis can be used for context-based scaffolding in language-sensitive chemistry lessons.

This research aims to analyze the eco-lexicon meanings contained in the conservation news texts published by mass media in Indonesia. The data sources are mass media found at www.unnes.ac.id, Suara Merdeka, and Kompas. The data are collected through listening, documentation, and interview techniques and analyzed using distributional and referential analysis techniques. The novelty of this study is the dimension of cultural meaning in the eco-collection of conservation news texts in the mass media in Indonesia. The findings of this study enrich the theory of Lindo and Bundsgaard in 2000 which stated that the dynamics and changes that occur at the lexicon level are influenced by three dimensions, namely ideological, sociological, and biological dimensions. Simply put, conservation news text needs to be utilized as teaching material by teachers and lecturers in language learning or other learning types in schools or universities to enrich the text genre and foster the value of love for the environment.

Using an emancipatory approach to historical learning, agency is emphasized as a goal for academic language learning in history classes. Furthermore, the professionalization of history teachers for academic language learning is examined. Planning conversations of history lessons that include academic language learning are analyzed empirically. The results show that students find it discernibly difficult to think of academic language and historical learning together. For this reason, a framework model of academic language learning with an emancipatory approach is developed. It is of importance for the professionalization of history teachers since it answers the fundamental question of how to implement academic language learning in history classes.

This paper is an excerpt from a thesis developed in the Postgraduate Program in Language Studies at the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais. It aims to present the development of a teaching and research proposal based on gender pedagogy. Itwas supported by a functional perspective of language use. And also, It was considered that other modes of meaning need to be presented in the classroom, not just the verbal one. It is supported by the principle that all text is multimodal (Kress, 2010), that is, formed by more than one semiotic mode. As a methodology, participatory research was used. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and field notes. As a result, it was noticed that the focus of the activity was beyond teachingthe language as a structure and allowed the development of other students' skills and knowledge. Difficulties were overcome and teach based on textual genres enables the use of language in real communication context.

In the editorial genre, conjunctions can play an essential role in argumentation. However, in its organization, other cohesive strategies also fulfill the function of linking the statements and providing guidance to the meaning of the text. This work explores how the thematic progression occurs in such a journalistic genre considering it a basic language expression unit. For this, it relies on the foundations of Functional Systemic Grammar (HALLIDAY, 1994) to identify the role of the thematic structure in the cohesive process. Thus, it intends not only to collaborate in the expansion of Systemic-Functional Linguistics knowledge but also in the development of Portuguese language teaching.

This research presents the stylistic investigation of the construction of the main character’s identity from Invisible Man. The corpus of analysis comprises the speeches of the book’s characters analyzed from the perspective of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics framework and its systems, related to the theme of identity in a text. The results indicate contracting resources, however, complementary to the voice in dialogue used by the homodiegetic narrator as a narrative subjective voice.

This article presents a study that aimed to describe and analyze how deconstruction and detailed reading, two phases of the Ler para Aprender program (ROSE; MARTIN, 2012), provided the analysis of the situational context variables and how collaborated for the exposition of points of view in opinion articles produced by a class of the 2nd grade of high school. The investigation in question was carried out in the light of the principles of action research, which took place in the context of the Programa de Residência Pedagógica / Núcleo de Língua Portuguesa andis anchored in the theoretical-methodological framework of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics, focusing more specifically on in the Sydney School's GenrePedagogy. For the development of the research, the students' textual productions (two copies of a universe of eighteen texts) and the responses to an interpretation activity designed with a view to exploring the variables of the situation context were analyzed. The analysisshowed that the stages of deconstruction and detailed reading provided the understanding of contextual variables (field, relationship and mode). Such understanding was crucial for the textual production to occur in the autonomous writing phase, having a direct impact on the lexical-grammatical and semantic-discursive choices of the students in the analyzed texts.

Language studies that deal with the pandemic context we live in are essential to understanding how activities have been performed/impacted. TakingSystemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL)as the basis, this research considers that language is influenced by the context of production and the expected goals. Thus, this study aims to map and understand which processes represent physicians' experiences when discussing their professional activities during the pandemic. The results confirm that participants most frequently used mental and relational processes to characterize the effects of the pandemic on their professional activities and interpersonal relationships.

Writing and the provision of feedback in English as a Second Language classrooms are crucial factors. Feedback provision is one of the productive approaches to improving learners’ writing performance in the ESL context. With the continuous evolution of technology, the methods of feedback have also varied and advanced. Even though teacher-written feedback is the most frequently used type of feedback, studies have discovered the use of teacher-written feedback is indecisive since the learners face difficulties in comprehending the teacher’s feedback. Therefore, there is a continuing dispute over the efficacy of teacher-written feedback. The present study addresses the dearth of research in the provision of video feedback for ESL writings in Sri Lanka and aims to contribute to the areas in which further research is needed. For this, an experimental quantitative research design was used. The empirical data for the study was gathered through the comparison of 20 participants’ multiple drafts of writing paragraphs over a five-week period and error analysis sheets were employed to track the errors in their writings. The results reveal that the participants in the experimental group incorporated higher levels of correction from two respective video feedback into their proceeding drafts than the participants in the control group who received two particular written feedback for two written texts during the study. The findings obtained from this study convey that video feedback is a pertinent practice in ESL writing. Hence, the requirement for more research to recognize cause and effect relationships of video feedback for writing is highlighted in the present study. Keywords: ESL learners, Writing skills, Paragraph writing, Teacher feedback, Video feedback

This study aims to uncover the types of mood and modality used in the Gettysburg Address and how Abraham Lincoln uses them to give dedication and emphasize the struggle to achieve union and equality. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design in analyzing the data. the data were collected from the text of the Gettysburg Address. After the data were collected, they were categorized into their proper interpersonal meaning elements classification. Then, the writer determined whether the data are in declarative mood, imperative mood, or interrogative mood, and revealed the type, orientation, and value of the modalities. Finally, the writer explained the mood and modality used by the speaker to give dedication and emphasize the struggle to achieve union and equality. The result shows that declarative mood occurs the most compared to the imperative mood. By using declarative mood, the speaker explains that they are struggling to win the war, they are going to give dedication for the fallen soldiers, and they are continuing their unfinished work to achieve union and equality. Meanwhile, the speaker uses imperative mood to command the listener that they must dedicate a portion of the aftermath field for their fallen soldiers who struggled to achieve union and equality. In using modality, the speaker positions their messages in the degree of Probability, Obligation, Inclination, and usuality. Most of them are in a high value and the rest are in median and low value.
