To understand the feeding habits of free-range chickens, a study on the behaviour of local chickens kept free range was carried out in Muy Muy, Nicaragua. Local hens spend 46 % of the day scavenging for feed. Sixty two percent (62%) of that time was spent consuming weeds and insects. The average percentage of protein in crop contents was 11.5, indicating a sub-optimal protein consumption for genetically improved chickens.

Inter-bird distances and behavioural priorities in laying hens: The effect of spatial restriction

In the largest pen, the birds were furthest apart when they were walking (310 ± 64 mm), closer together when they were standing (234 ± 75 mm) or ground pecking (237 ± 13 mm) and closest together when they were preening (154 ± 98 mm). As pen size decreased, the frequency of walking and ground pecking decreased significantly, the frequency of preening remained unchanged and the frequency of standing increased.

Twenty four specific-pathogen-free hens were divided into three groups of eight. The first two groups were orally challenged with a dose of 1.3 × 104 and 1.3 × 108 colony forming units (cfu) of S. enteritidis per hen, the third group was uninfected. Faecal samples were collected weekly for 5 weeks and cultured. Levels of S. enteritidis recovered from hens infected with 108 cfu/ml S. enteritidis were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than from 104 cfu/ml group. Rate of faecal shedding decreased from 100 to 75 and 37.5% at weeks 1, 2 and 4 respectively in 10 cfu infected hens. Intermittent shedding pattern was observed in the 104 cfu group. Hence, Salmonella contamination of poultry environment continues in sub-clinical infection. Multiple faecal sampling of flocks may be necessary to know their Salmonella status and in vaccine assessment.

Nutritive evaluation of dried poultry excreta as a feed ingredient for broiler chickens

In the first of two experiments, the effect of graded levels of oven or solar dried poultry excreta (DPE) on broiler performance, carcass yield, abdominal fat pad weight and thigh meat composition was examined. Excreta were collected every 3 days from laying hens and immediately dried in an oven at 60 °C or in a solar drier at 50–70 °C and milled. The DPE was included in broiler diets at levels ... [Show full abstract] of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. The diets were made both isoenergetic and isonitrogenous. The type and level of DPE had no significant effect on growth rate. Inclusion of DPE affected (P < 0.05) feed intake, although no difference was noted between the types of DPE. Neither inclusion nor level of DPE had a significant effect on feed efficiency. Dried poultry excreta had variable effects on abdominal fat pad size, carcass yield, and thigh meat composition. A significantly higher carcass yield was obtained in the control group than in the other groups. In the second experiment, utilization of DPE at various levels of energy and protein was evaluated. Broiler starter diets containing 10% DPE were formulated to have 11.51 MJ apparent metabolizable energy (AME) kg−1, 11.97 MJ AME kg−1 and 11.43 MJ AME kg−1, with 20.8%, 21.7% and 22.5% crude protein, respectively. Finisher diets were formulated to contain the same energy levels but with crude protein contents of 18.2%, 19.2% and 20.0%, respectively. No significant differences were observed in broiler performance, carcass yield or meat composition of broilers fed on these diets from 1 to 54 days of age. With proper adjustments of energy and protein to meet the broilers' requirements, oven or solar dried poultry waste can be safely included at levels of up to 20% of broiler diets.

Studies with broilers, growing pullets, and laying hens are in agreement that increased amino acid levels cannot effectively compensate for the reduced feed intake frequently observed at the higher envirnomental temperatures. Excessive dietary amino acid levels contribute to inhibition of feed intake and reduction in growth rate. Studies with practical-type diets have indicated that the performance of broiler chicks under conditions of high environmental temperatures may be improved through minimizing the excess levels of amino acids in the diet. This may be accomplished by means of blending protein sources combined with supplementation with commercially synthesized amino acids.

Effect of Certain Cations in Cane Final Molasses on Fecal Moisture of Chicks

IT HAS been reported that the domestic fowl can tolerate high levels of cane final molasses during all stages of growth and maturity up to 72 weeks of age. Although lymphoid leukosis (LL) was first described in 1868 (1), the economic significance of the disease has only recently been recognized. Mortality associated with LL tumors, the most common visible manifestation of avian leukosis virus (ALV) infection, is low and occurs mostly in older hens (2,3,4,5,6). Therefore, it was generally believed that the economic damage caused to the poultry ... [Show full abstract] industry by ALV infection was small, even though there was some suspicion, based on industrial observations that ALV infection impaired production traits (7). Higher mortality from ALV was observed only rarely, in flocks with a prevalence of congenitally infected chickens (8,9). The situation changed after it was shown that non-neoplastic effects of ALV infection result in serious economic losses. Indications of such effects appeared in 1978 (10) and 1979 (11), followed by assessment of the size of such effects in White Leghorns in 1980 (12). Subsequently, several more studies, discussed in detail below, further elucidated the changes in performance associated with ALV infection.
