The description of a new species of Agrilus Curtis, with distributional records, and taxonomic and biological notes for Agrilinae and Trachyinae (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) of Mexico and Central America

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

This paper treats 225 species of Buprestidae in the genera Agrilus, Brachys, Callimicra, Cyphothorax, Dismorpha, Hylaeogena, Leiopleura, Lius, Omochyseus, Pachyschelus, Paragrilus, Taphrocerus and Trypantius. New country records are recorded for Mexico and all Central American countries. Agrilus vandenberghei Westcott and Hespenheide, new species, from Central America and Mexico, and the male of Agrilus eyai Westcott and Noguera are described and figured. Rational is provided for changing Agrilus aurilatera Waterhouse to A. aurilaterus; A. catherinae Chevrolat is shown to be a justified emendation of A. catharinae; A. complexus (Waterhouse) is a new combination; and A. consobrinus Dugès is synonymized with A. correctus Thompson.

T. pseudoleoni sp. nov. is also similar to T. tenellus (Gory, 1841) (described from Venezuela and reported from Mexican states Campeche (Westcott et al. 1990) with note: "throughout Central America (Hespenheide unpublished)") and Tabasco (Westcott et Hespenheide 2006) in general body shape, colouration, frons deeply and rather widely depressed at middle (DV) and slightly spathulate elytral apices. T. tenellus is rather well distinguished by distinctly more attenuate elytra at apical half and mainly by different elytral ornamental pubescence (pattern): two (1+1) small round spots in the end of basal fourth near suture (somewhat interrupted stripe in the end of basal fourth (obliquely down from the suture) in T. pseudoleoni sp. ...

The history of publishing biological data on Agrilus is prolific and dates to the earliest days. There are 1,250 host related references in this study with no chance to adequately highlight all the important ones. This section is just a brief insight into several aspects of biological discovery of these splendid beetles.

The name Agrilus impexus Horn has been found to belong to a Great Plains species and to be misapplied to a common southwestern Agrilus. Agrilus impexus is redescribed and A. paraimpexus, new species, is described from New Mexico, Arizona and California to Costa Rica. It is distinguished from both Agrilus impexus and the closely related A. addendus Crotch from Texas to Vera Cruz, Mexico, and a lectotype is designated for A. addendus. Agrilus frisoni Fisher is synonymized with A. addendus, new synonymy. Agrilus funestus Chevrolat is recorded from the United States for the first time and figured.

The buprestid genus Paragrilus Saunders, 1871 is reviewed for North and Central America. Of 18 species that are recognized, six are described as new: P. akersi, P. burkei, P. heliocarpi, P. molden-kei, P. fallorum, and P. azureus. Species fall into three species groups, the P. rugatulus group, the P. trifoveolatus group, and the P. aeraticollis group. Four species are considered to occur in the United States: P. burkei, P. lesueuri Waterhouse, P. rugatulus Thomson, and P. tenuis (LeConte). A key is given to separate species. Lectotypes are designated for P. laevicollis Waterhouse and P. tri-foveolatus Waterhouse. All known adult hosts are in the Malvales (families Malvaceae, Sterculi-aceae and Tiliaceae), two species have been reared (P. lesueuri and P. tenuis), and four species of the P. rugatulus group are known to associate with the genus Sida in the family Malvaceae.
