In Focus: The Place of Television Studies

Abstract

Cinema Journal 45.1 (2005) 79-82 This In Focus, on the current state of television and new media studies, was inspired by two recent landmarks in the history of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS). The first was the second anniversary of the decision by the membership to change the organization's name to affirm its support for scholarship in radio, television, and digital media. The change marked the culmination of a long campaign among television scholars and others within SCMS to recognize its members' expanded intellectual terrain. Despite the name change, however, the organization's official publication, Cinema Journal, still receives relatively few manuscript submissions devoted to nonfilm topics. While there are probably many reasons for the low proportion of television—and new media-related submissions (some beyond the journal's control), the editors hoped that devoting an In Focus to television and new media would underscore the journal's commitment to providing a venue for the best emerging scholarship in the field. The second occasion for this In Focus section was the success of the 2005 SCMS conference, held at the University of London's Institute of Education. In addition to being the first SCMS conference convened outside North America, a record number of panels and papers addressed nonfilm topics. Furthermore, the London venue, which helped attract an unprecedented number of European scholars to the conference, also reinforced the international nature of television studies, old and new. As television studies emerged out of the 1980s cross-Atlantic confluence of film studies, political economy, feminism, and cultural studies, among the important venues for new scholarship were the four international television studies conferences organized between 1984 and 1991 by the British Film Institute and the University of London's Institute of Education. As Lynn Spigel notes in her essay here, that those conferences and the 2005 SCMS conference were held at the same venue prompted reflection on the past two decades of television studies and on the future of the field. It was in this context of introspection that Cinema Journal invited six senior scholars in the field of television studies to consider the current state of and prospects for television and new media studies. A handful of key questions framed their reflections: What are the proper aims and methods of television studies? What are its debts to film studies and to other humanities and social science disciplines? How should television studies relate to the emerging fields of visual studies and new media studies? How might current academic and scholarly institutions be reconfigured to support TV studies? Finally, how might the work of television scholars be brought to wider public debates over media policy, and how might such debates inform the research of media scholars? As more than one of our contributors note, these questions are unusually urgent as television itself undergoes fundamental technological and institutional changes around the world. As both Toby Miller and Lynn Spigel posit, speculation about the future of television has been a perennial theme. Such speculation reveals more about the anxieties and hopes of those offering predictions than of the imagined media future conjured up. Inviting television scholars to speculate about the future of television studies also provides a collective snapshot of a young discipline at a moment when, despite its record of substantial scholarly accomplishments, it faces fundamental questions about its proper objects and methods, and about its place in the academic institutions of education, research, and publishing. The perennial challenges of defining the texts and methods of television studies are made more urgent in the current context of industry consolidation and technological convergence. At the same time, the current (and ubiquitous) calls for scholarly interdisciplinarity beg fundamental questions about the nature of television studies research and whether interdisciplinarity should be pursued on the level of individual articles or monographs, academic departments, scholarly organizations, or journals. As scholars continue to sort out the implications of the current forces of globalization, corporate consolidation, and textual hybridity, the tools and level of analysis appropriate to these new objects of study remain highly contested. In this study, we are focusing specifically on The West Wing, which was a highly acclaimed television show that many scholars argue is a fairly accurate representation of the American presidency (e.g., Gladstone-Sovell, 2006;Rollins & O'Connor, 2003b). Although television has been adopted under the umbrella of film studies by leading scholars in the field (Boddy, 2005), there are several salient differences between Hollywood movies and television series that may have instructional ramifications for teachers. This study describes one high school civics teacher's use of film as a way to improve his students' understanding of politics. Using episodes of The West Wing, an award-winning political drama, over the course of a semester, the teacher was able to create an authentic context for political instruction that allowed his students to practice thinking politically, better understand real-life political events, and make connections across the formal curriculum. The findings from this study offer several implications for both the teaching of politics in secondary education as well as the use of film in secondary social studies courses.

Films, which include, but are not limited to, movies and TV series are increasingly becoming the fancy of everyday life for folks across the globe. Such a fascinating trend motivates inquiries for any potential that can be utilized in places where scientific research and its applications are limited or are being constrained. This article presents a state-of-the-art review of an African Nollywood movie, Igodo: The Land of the Living Dead. Two objectives are considered: to examine the logical reasoning of the movie, and to investigate the possibility – if there is any – that films by and large can be used in much the same way as a research output, to formulate policy and inform decision-making in various aspects of human life and society. This review employs an iconographic approach to explore the plot, texts, special effects and cultural disposition of Igodo in a way to make sense of its significance and implications within the context of scientific research. An analysis of the movie’s plot and spectacle reveals a unique problem, which the movie identifies, key questions, which it attempts to answer, a hypothesis, which it formulates, and tests, a method, which it proposes to use to collect a set of data and to analyse them, and finally a conclusion, which it draws from the outcome of the analysis. Thus, the movie mirrors and resonates with scientific research in its ontological and epistemological framework, and underscores a reckonable significance, which possibly transcends the immediate satisfaction of film producers and audiences. With such a potential, film should be acknowledged as a useful tool for policy and institutional intervention especially in localities where poor access to cultural legacies and reliable data impose severe limitations on traditional research approaches and implementation.

Téma této disertační práce představuje teoretický koncept cinematizace televize a jeho významy a užití v diskurzu oboru televizních studií, který jej pomáhá udržovat v mediálním oběhu. Cílem práce je zmapovat koncept v diskurzu televizních studií a poukázat na jeho interpretace a funkce. Metodologicky se opírám o kritickou diskurzivní analýzu, respektive přístup Normana Fairclougha (1992), který je doplněn o historickou stylistickou analýzu Jeremyho G. Butlera (2010). Prameny v této práci představují odborné texty o cinematizaci televize. Zároveň analyzuji vybrané televizní pořady k ilustraci toho, jak cinematizace vypadá v psaném odborném textu a jak se projevuje audiovizuálně, což vede k ucelenému pohledu na problematiku. Propojením textů (psaných a audiovizuálních), jejich diskurzivních praktik a obecnějších kontextů pomocí kritické diskurzivní analýzy chci dosáhnout komplexního vyobrazení a prozkoumání vybraného konceptu, který se běžně objevuje v odborné literatuře mimo ni, a není vždy zohledněn kriticky. Práce sleduje genealogický vývoj konceptu cinematizace televize v diskurzu televizních studií, jak se proměňuje a jaké nové významy a přístupy se v něm objevují. Zároveň zohledňuje užití termínu cinematičnost ve filmové teorii, což cinematizaci televize předcházelo. To nabízí pochopení některých konotací konceptu a zároveň je tím problematizováno jeho užití v televizních studiích. V závěru práce předkládám teoretický nástroj negociace pro analýzu cinematického televizního stylu.

“Television” refers to “seeing from afar.” It describes a physical device, a cultural system, and a labor process that brings the two together and embeds them in the daily experience of half the world's population (→ Television). “Popular” signifies of, by, and for the people, offering transcendence through pleasure, but doing so by referring to the everyday (→ Popular Communication). “Culture” derives from agriculture (→ Culture: Definitions and Concepts). With the emergence of capitalism, it embodied instrumentalism and abjured it, via the industrialization of farming and the cultivation of taste.

Cet article s’appuie sur une étude que nous avons effectuée concernant les discours promotionnels des membres de l’industrie télévisuelle américaine. À la suite d’une analyse de quelques médias écrits, nous avons décelé quatre stratégies discursives récurrentes chez les professionnels de l’industrie télévisuelle lors de la promotion d’une série télévisée. Après une brève présentation de ces quatre stratégies promotionnelles, l’objectif central de cet article est d’analyser en détail le dernier type de discours recensé, à savoir la promotion des séries télévisées en tant que « films ». Un tel type de discours promotionnel, bien que n’étant évidemment pas le seul mobilisé par l’industrie, est néanmoins fréquent aujourd’hui et mérite d’être plus amplement étudié. En ayant recours à certaines stratégies énonciatives – utilisation de qualificatifs associés au médium cinématographique, association d’une série à un corpus de films, mise en évidence de similitudes esthétiques et techniques, valorisation de l’Auteur –, l’industrie télévisuelle semble souvent chercher à valoriser ses séries en les associant à la production cinématographique. Ces discours d’association au cinéma peuvent être interprétés comme des stratégies de légitimation du médium télévisuel et des tentatives de modification des rapports de pouvoir entre les artisans des milieux télévisuel et cinématographique. Il s’agit de montrer que certains discours de l’industrie télévisuelle américaine témoignent d’une influence significative du cinéma sur les techniques de promotion actuelles, tout en questionnant les impacts positifs et négatifs que l’adoption d’une telle stratégie d’association au cinéma peut avoir sur le processus de légitimation de la télévision.

The Cinematic and the Televisual City: South London Revisited: This essay returns to the local London discussed by Brunsdon in her 2007 book, London in Cinema to consider the depiction of South London on British television in the 1980s. Before commencing the detailed analysis of Only Fools and Horses and Desmond’s, the differential status of film and television in studies of the audio-visual city is outlined, and it is suggested that the enormous significance of television in creating images of the city has been neglected because of contempt for the medium. It is argued that it is on television, in the living rooms of the nation, that changing ideas of Britishness were negotiated and the essay concludes with a discussion of the Deptford-set detective series, South of the Border.

Legitimating Television: Media Convergence and Cultural Status explores how and why television is gaining a new level of cultural respectability in the 21st century. Once looked down upon as a "plug-in drug" offering little redeeming social or artistic value, television is now said to be in a creative renaissance, with critics hailing the rise of Quality series such as Mad Men and 30 Rock. Likewise, DVDs and DVRs, web video, HDTV, and mobile devices have shifted the longstanding conception of television as a household appliance toward a new understanding of TV as a sophisticated, high-tech gadget.

The relationship between the cinematic image and the industrial commodity was the subject of many product placement studies during the 20th century. This article argues that the contemporary computer automation of perspective and rendering has had far-reaching consequences for the relationship between cinematic image and manufactured object. The emergence of Renaissance perspective structured a new relationship between the image and the object, both of which were rationalised under the visually representable specificity of geometrical and mathematical precision. Taking this as a departure, contemporary computer generated (CG) animation renovates ‘the visual nominalism’ of Renaissance perspective with one crucial difference: computer automation adds the fourth dimension of time to the perspectival image. This facilitates an image form qualitatively different from either hand-drawn Renaissance imaging or mechanically reproduced film, an image form that is instead both hand-drawn and mechanically reproduced at the same time. The implications of this difference are explored through a close analysis of contemporary CG animated features, which offer much to an understanding of the future development of all cinematic imaging and consumer culture. Perhaps most significantly, the objects and characters that populate CG features are integrally related to contemporary practices of industrial product design engineering: a development that has considerable implications for contemporary understandings of ‘product placement’. When every object on screen is literally an industrially manufactured, carefully placed product, traditional theories of film, advertising and consumer culture need to be retriangulated. This article asserts that CG features demand a new approach to the relationship between cinematic image and manufactured product on multiple levels.

In British “New Wave” films of the 1960s such as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (Karel Reisz, 1960) and A Kind of Loving (Tony Richardson, 1962), television is a classic “bad object,” associated with commercialism, consumerism, lack of authenticity, and the destruction of both family life and traditional working-class communal values.1 This television, clearly gendered as it shrieks and chatters in the corner, is uncomfortably squeezed into cramped working-class living rooms, but is shown to inspire desires and behavior that will transform these living spaces. In that often rather revealing party game, if this television was a person, it would be a bottle-blonde, commodity-obsessed housewife, one of the many feminized embodiments of mass culture in a history that reaches at least as far back as novel readers. However, this figure, although brash and slightly vulgar, with more than a hint of the American, at least had modernity and the future on her side, even if she must be repudiated by the virile young men who are the heroes of these fictions. Forty years later, in the North London–set About a Boy (Chris and Paul Weitz, 2002), television again figures as both a maker and a marker of identity. However, now the hero Will (Hugh Grant) lives in an apartment furnished in leather and chrome and organized spatially around the new entertainment technologies. Far from being crammed in, the screen structures the living space and is itself controlled through a selection of remote control devices. For Will, domestic media technology offers choice and enables him to structure his days and to pass the time. He is strongly invested in the construction of identity through the consumption and possession of cool artifacts, be they gadgets or shoes, CDs or movies. However, not all of Will’s acquaintances inhabit the same black-and-chrome media landscape, and he is unfortunate enough to become involved with a woman who doesn’t have “cable or satellite or DVD,” and so the couple are stuck on the sofa with an endless made-for-TV movie on broadcast terrestrial television. Broadcast (network) television, what you watch when you have no choice, is inextricably linked here with excessive emotion, domesticity, needy women, being trapped. A final shot from this relationship sums it up as the couple sit watching television on the sofa. The shot is taken from behind the television, and shows Will’s face framed tightly between the television and the sofa. We do not need to see what he is watching to understand the kind of television he is stuck with, but the way in which his face is caught between those two horizontals epitomizes the way in which this television makes him feel, just as the soundtrack offers “oh no, oh no, oh no.” Television once was new, but is now old-fashioned. No more a brassy blonde, she is now embodied by depressed single mothers. The technologies may develop, but the gendered metaphors through which they are thought persist. Initially, television was inferior to cinema—and to older, more authentic (music-hall) or prestigious forms (theater); now it is inferior to “digital media,” as well as having a bit of an identity crisis of its own. This identity crisis shapes discussion of television in the twenty-first century. The best-selling collection Television after TV: Essays on a Medium in Transition, edited by Lynn Spigel and Jan Olssen, poses the question of the historical periodicity of television in its title.2 John Ellis has proposed a tripartite periodization, in which television has had ages of “scarcity,” “availability,” and “abundance.”3 Jimmie Reeves, Michael Epstein, and Mark Rodgers have developed the notion of TVIII (which succeeds TVs I and II) to address the changed conditions and modalities of television in the current, “post-network,” digital era.4 The European public service broadcast models, while still dominating ideas of national television, have in a sense been pushed aside by a televisual landscape re-figured by new modes of production, regulation, and delivery.
