Abstract

John Muir certainly ranks among the most importtant conservationists and naturalists in American history. Yet we haven’t had a full biography of Muir for well over half a century. So the recent publication of A Passion for Nature: The Life of John Muir (Oxford, 2008) is a welcome event—especially since Donald Worster, one of the founders of the field of environmental history, is its author. In this issue, Worster comments on Muir and the “religion of nature” and then responds to questions from Historically Speaking senior editor Donald A. Yerxa.
