Prediction of childhood cognitive abilities from a set of early indicators of information processing capabilities

Childhood tests of intelligence are often composed of several different tasks or scales. In contrast to this, many studies assessing early indicators of cognitive ability include only one or two different infant paradigms. The present study employs an extended set of infant paradigms for the prediction of childhood development and intelligence. Two groups of infants (64 three- and 63 six-months olds) were tested. Subjects were retested at 24- and 32-months of age with several indicators related to developmental state, verbal skills and intelligence. Especially in the group of 6-month-olds, the analysis demonstrated that significant R(2) contributions were yielded by a set of different predictor variables. The results show that a set of predictors in contrast to single predictors leads to a substantial increase of the variance accounted for.

    ABSTRACT: Male and female infants from rural Ethiopia were tested to investigate relations among hemoglobin (Hb), anthropometry, and attention. A longitudinal design was used to examine differences in attention performance from 6 (M = 24.9 weeks, n = 89) to 9 months of age (M = 40.6 weeks, n = 85), differences hypothesized to be related to changes in iron status and growth delays. Stunting (length-for-age z scores < -2.0) and attention performance, t(30) = -2.42, p = .022, worsened over time. Growth and Hb predicted attention at 9 months, R(2) = .15, p < .05, but not at 6. The study contributes to the knowledge base concerning the relations among Hb, early growth, and attention.

    ABSTRACT: Consistent with developmental cascade notions, the present study investigated (a) associations between trajectories of interparental conflict and early externalizing problems during childhood and (b) early trajectories of externalizing problems as a pathway by which interparental conflict impacts children's social competence in preadolescence. Participants were 235 children and their parents and teachers. Children were assessed annually for 3 years, beginning when they were in kindergarten. Parents provided reports of interparental conflict and child externalizing problems. Children's social competence (prosocial behavior, social problems) was assessed approximately 5 years later via parent and teacher reports. Results from parallel process models indicated that changes in interparental conflict were positively associated with changes in externalizing problems during childhood. Further, demonstrating pathways consistent with notions of developmental cascades, early trajectories of externalizing problems accounted for the longitudinal link between early trajectories of interparental conflict and children's social problems in preadolescence.

    ABSTRACT: This study examined whether the quality of caregiver behavior in child care centers contributes to infant cognitive development at 9 months of age. Sixty-four infants (34 boys) were observed with their primary caregivers in child care centers at 3, 6, and 9 months of age. Caregiver behavior was rated for sensitivity and for stimulation of infant development during one-to-one caregiving interactions. Infant cognitive development was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II (Mental Development Index). Higher levels of developmental stimulation in the centers predicted higher levels of infant cognitive development at 9 months, beyond infant cognitive development at 3 months (just before entering child care), parental education, and maternal sensitivity. The results suggest that even small increases in developmental stimulation provided in child care centers in the first year of life may foster infants' cognitive development.
