Abstract
Reference management (RM) software is widely used by researchers in the health and natural sciences. Librarians are often called upon to provide support for these products. The present study compares four prominent RMs: CiteULike, RefWorks, Mendeley, and Zotero, in terms of features offered and the accuracy of the bibliographies that they generate. To test importing and data management features, fourteen references from seven bibliographic databases were imported into each RM, using automated features whenever possible. To test citation accuracy, bibliographies of these references were generated in five different styles. The authors found that RefWorks generated the most accurate citations. The other RMs offered contrasting strengths: CiteULike in simplicity and social networking, Zotero in ease of automated importing, and Mendeley in PDF management. Ultimately, the choice of an RM should reflect the user's needs and work habits. (Contains 3 tables.)

... There are many reference managers, and these are well known in the sci-enti¯c community (Hull et al., 2008;Mead and Berryman, 2010). According to Gilmour and Cobus-Kuo (2011), the¯rst RMS packages have their origin in the 1980s. In these days, there are more than 25 di®erent RMS packages available for use (Mead and Berryman, 2010). ...
... Several papers have been written about bibliographic management products. Some have compared their features (Butros and Taylor, 2010;Gilmour and Cobus-Kuo, 2011;Hensley and Kern, 2011;Ovadia, 2011), few number of researchers investigated for error rate of RMS (Eichorn and Yankauer, 1987;Vargas-Origel et al., 2001;Mohta and Mohta, 2003;Gupta et al., 2005), others have investigated their use among students (Emanuel, 2013;Salem and Fehrmann, 2013), or how faculty perceive them (Martin, 2009). In addition, a range of short reviews of di®erent packages of RMS have been provided, for example, for Mendeley (Medaille, 2010), Zotero (Arellano, 2010), EndNote (Reichardt, 2010a), CiteULike (McMullen, 2010), Ref-Works (Reichardt, 2010b). ...
The study seeks to ascertain the levels of awareness and usage of reference management software (RMS) among researchers of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana. The purpose and benefits as well as challenges associated with the use of these tools were also discussed. Descriptive survey methodology was employed for this study. A web-based questionnaire consisting of both multiple-choice and open-ended questions was used to collect data from 110 scientists in 13 research institutes of the CSIR, Ghana. Results show that overwhelming majority of scientists (80%) are aware and know about RMS. However, the adoption and usage of these tools are low. The percentage of non-usage was higher among the older scientists (22% for over 51 years) as against the younger researchers (9% for 31 to 40 years). Overall, 33.6% do not use RMS at all, and scientists occasionally used RMS. Mendeley was the most popularly used software among respondents. Results also show that most of the respondents got to know about RMS through training workshops and seminars. Most of the respondents had not received any training and for those who had attended a training workshop or seminar, majority of them noted that it was very easy to use. The main purpose of using these tools was for research work and literature review. Major benefits of using RMS packages are automatic generation of references list, electronic creation of bibliographies and changing of referencing style by a click of a button. Challenges associated with the use of these tools were slow internet connection, lack of training, and technical support. The study recommended that CSIR should make the effort to acquire these tools. Scientists should also be given the necessary training and technical support in order to effectively use these softwares.
... As indicated earlier, the scholarly communication system has seen a tremendous transformation over the years, especially, with the introduction of the digital age, Web 2.0 applications, and open scholarship initiatives (Chen et al., 2018;Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo, 2011). Currently, there exists numerous and different reference management software with the popular ones being EndNote, RefWorks, CiteULike, Mendeley, ProCite, Zotero among others (Lorenzetti & Ghali, 2013;Sarrafzadeh & Khaleghi, 2017). ...
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge and use of Reference Management Software (RMS) among university students pursuing various degrees in health and related programmes in Ghana. It further sought to find out respondents' motives for choosing a particular RMS and also the various sources of support for users of such programmes. Design/methodology/approach: This descriptive cross-sectional study used a questionnaire to solicit for data from third year, fourth year and postgraduate students of the University of Health Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana, on their knowledge and use of RMS in their academic and scientific writings. Findings: This study found out that more males use RMS than females. It was also confirmed that Mendeley was the most known and used RMS and that training organised by the library contributed to the increased knowledge and utilisation of the RMS. Lack of knowledge about RMS and institutions not requiring students to use RMS contributed to their non-usage. The primary use of RMS among the respondents was for insertion of citations and generation of bibliographies for their assignments and theses. Originality/value: In Ghana, institutes of higher learning have witnessed the use of RMS among their constituents. However, apart from a recent study conducted among researchers at CSIR, no scientific study had been conducted among students on the purpose of this study. Thus, the findings of this study will inform librarians and policymakers to appreciate what their students require as far as the management of their bibliographic needs is concerned.

Referencing provides information about resources used in research work by researcher. A reference manager supports researchers in performing three basic research steps: searching, storing and writing. Plagiarism is a term that describes the unacknowledged use of someone’s work. Plagiarism is a very serious academic offence. References given as per standard reference style manual avoid plagiarism. The online reference management tools helps the researchers to import and export citations, organize citations, and produce the citations in a variety of reference management style manuals or formats. This paper describes four popular online reference management tools viz. EndNote, Mendeley, Refworks and Zotero.

Aim/Purpose: Identify the prerequisites, the corequisites, and the iteration processes in organizing and writing the literature review chapter of doctoral dissertations. Background: Writing the literature review chapter of doctoral dissertations presents unique challenges. Students waste a lot of time identifying material to write, and the experience is generally that of frustration and time delay. Methodology: This paper reviews literature to identify levels of information helpful for writing the literature review chapter: prerequisites, corequisites, and iteration process. Contribution: The contribution of this paper is different than others that have been writ-ten about the literature review. The intended audiences for this paper are mentors, advisors, or academies that supervise students in writing their doctoral dissertations. This paper introduces the writing of the literature review by organizing the suggestions into groups of topics more familiar to academies than in other fields. The concepts of prerequisites, corequisites, and iteration are very familiar to educators; they often use them in their courses. The academic curriculums are built on such concepts. Thus, grouping the discussion into these terms familiar to mentors, advisors, or doctoral dissertations supervisors will put the findings into a more helpful focus for educators that supervise students in writing the literature review chapter. Findings: Writing a doctoral dissertation literature review is long and complicated be-cause some students delve into the writing without much preparation. Identifying what is helpful before and during the writing and being mindful of the repetitive steps helps guide the students through the writing of the literature review chapter of doctoral dissertations. Recommendations for Practitioners: Before delving into the writing of the literature review, it will be helpful to identify the prerequisites, the corequisites, and the iteration process that goes into the writing literature review. Recommendations for Researchers: Writing the literature review chapter in doctoral dissertations remains challenging. More research would be helpful that focuses on the late writing stages. The suggestions we made in this paper could form a solid start for future research in this topic. Impact on Society: The research findings will help doctoral mentors/advisors guide students in completing the chapter on literature review.

The scientific community considers readership analysis of academic artifacts to be a significant endeavor. The reference manager's readership count is a momentous indication for early research evaluation. In response, this study demonstrates the characteristics of Mendeley readership for EPS articles from twelve narrow disciplines and compares them with citations. The bibliographic and citation data have been collected from Scopus and the corresponding readers' data from Mendeley. The Spearman correlation was performed among citations and readers for all unique articles for all investigated disciplines. Further, we also looked at the relationships between articles with non-zero readers, as well as articles satisfied by percentile ranking of the top 75 per cent, 50 per cent, and 25 per cent readers. The result indicates large correlations among citations and readers (avg. 0.669) for all investigated disciplines. If we analysed only non-zero readers, as well as a percentile ranking of articles, the correlation results show a decreasing trend. Around 98.57 per cent of articles have at least one reader in Mendeley and AS (97.53 %) discipline has registered the highest one. The CES discipline had registered the largest MRS of 32.25 and MCS of 12.75. Most of the readers come from post-doctoral students and Ph.D. students. The correlation results indicate that the readership statistics should be used as an impact indicator for EPS discipline.

Along teaching scientific research is second most important task for every university and faculty member. Research results are commonly published as journal papers, book chapters or as conference proceedings with the purpose to communicate the findings in academic circles, serve as promotion, or be used for tenure or reapplication. Maintaining the list of scientific references, can be a time consuming and tedious activity. To help along the process we have created a Web application named References that makes the process of editing and formatting the references partially automated and less time consuming. In this paper we present the architecture of the application, its functionalities and newly added feature that enables importing references both from structured and unstructured data.

The scientific and technological progress experienced in the last decades stimulated by the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), produced meaningful changes in the way scientific knowledge is accessed, organized, produced and, above all, disseminated. This work aims to analyze how Scholarly Communication Practices of Information Science PhD students in the Iberian Area and in Brazil occur. Specifically, it aims to: perform a literature review to produce a panorama of science communication, pointing out its evolution and state of the art; identify how the incorporation of ICT takes place and their impacts on the scientific practices of this epistemic group; to map science communication processes carried out by them as well as to reflect on their Doctoral Education. The methodology used was literature review followed by a qualitative and quantitative approach. The study is characterized as exploratory-descriptive. A case study was made with doctoral students from six PhD Programs in Information Science in Portugal, Spain and in Brazil. Data collection was done by means of semi-structured interviews and an electronic survey where 174 responses were obtained. The study revealed that ICT pervasively permeates all phases of doctoral education and scholarly production. Concerning the publication of results, respondents prefer traditional forms of scientific communication and validation. It was perceived that the group considers that the rapid evolution of ICT is a potentially negative aspect for ICT adoption and that the PhD programs could further promote the use of these tools.

The results of this study will be beneficial for the KU library administration to be better engaged in the awareness campaign at the university level.
... The management requires a detailed description of the source being referenced and preferably link to the full-text too (Hull, Pettifer & Kell, 2008). A second requirement is their ability to convert references into citations, according to the norms for formatting citations in writing (Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo, 2011). Reference managers assist in keeping references accessible and machine-readable, ready to be formatted for use in citation (Fenner, Scheliga & Bartling, 2014). ...
Background
Given the vast number of standards and formats for bibliographical data, any program working with bibliographies and citations has to be able to interpret such data. This paper describes the development of Citation.js ( https://citation.js.org/ ), a tool to parse and format according to those standards. The program follows modern guidelines for software in general and JavaScript in specific, such as version control, source code analysis, integration testing and semantic versioning.
Results
The result is an extensible tool that has already seen adaption in a variety of sources and use cases: as part of a server-side page generator of a publishing platform, as part of a local extensible document generator, and as part of an in-browser converter of extracted references. Use cases range from transforming a list of DOIs or Wikidata identifiers into a BibTeX file on the command line, to displaying RIS references on a webpage with added Altmetric badges to generating ”How to cite this” sections on a blog. The accuracy of conversions is currently 27% for properties and 60% for types on average and a typical initialization takes 120 ms in browsers and 1 s with Node.js on the command line.
Conclusions
Citation.js is a library supporting various formats of bibliographic information in a broad selection of use cases and environments. Given the support for plugins, more formats can be added with relative ease.

... For decades, researchers have considered the benefits of using CMS (Basak, 2014, Garfield;Flanagan, & Fox 1989). Many articles provide direct comparisons between specific tools (Basak, 2014;Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo, 2011;Hensley, 2011;Steeleworthy & Dewan, 2013); others outline criteria for selecting the best software for a particular academic library (Butros & Taylor, 2011;Marino, 2012). Tramullas, Sánchez-Casabón, and Garrido-Picazo (2015) have conducted a literature review of such studies. ...
Librarians recognized an opportunity to grow the number of RefWorks users on campus and launched an initiative to more aggressively market the software. Barriers to growth were recognized, staff training was undertaken, and targeted services and programming were infused with more content centered on the citation management software (CMS). After a year and a half, the library assessed the popularity and impact of the program. While RefWorks is now much more widely used on campus, it has also led to additional instructional classes, workshops, and reference transactions. These additional and unanticipated benefits have greatly enhanced the reputation of the software among librarians. In addition, students, faculty, and university administrators have all responded positively to the results of the initiative, enhancing the reputation of the library on campus. Other academic libraries may benefit from a similar campaign based on their own subscription CMS.
... Tramullas, Sánchez-Casabón and Garrido-Picaso (2015) noted that papers that included PDF management features in their comparisons started appearing around 2010. Several studies have also focused on quality of citations generated by reference management software (Brahmi & Gall, 2006;Fitzgibbons & Meert, 2010;Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo, 2011;Homol, 2014;Kratochvíl, 2017) but there are fewer studies on the use of reference management software by particular user groups. ...
Graduate students at the University of Manitoba were surveyed to find out if they used reference management software (RMS), features used, challenges and barriers to using RMS. Interest in different types of PDF management features and training options were also investigated. Both users and non-users of reference management software were invited to participate. Non-users managed their citations and references with a variety of other tools. The principal reasons for non-use were that students were not aware of options that were available, and the amount of time needed to learn the program. RMS users also mentioned the steep learning curve, problems with extracting metadata from PDFs, technical issues, and problems with inaccurate citation styles. Most of the students saved PDF documents to their computer. Students were most interested in full-text searching of PDFs, automatic renaming of PDFs, and automatically extracting citation metadata from a PDF. PDF annotation and reading tools were also of some interest. Mobile features were of the least interest. There were no statistically significant differences in the interest of PDF management features between the user and non-user groups but there were statistically significant differences in the interest of some of the training options between the groups.
... As our main motive is to develop a reference manager that works on a personal computer of the researcher to help in his/her daily tasks of organising the scholarly literature, we have looked and even personally experienced different reference management softwares like Mendeley, Docear and Zotero. From the literature [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11] and even from the personal experience that we have gained in each of the reference manager we would like to present our findings. Coming to Mendeley this reference manager will help us in citation management along with full text article organisation. ...
Reference management softwares are widely used by the researchers to maintain their collection of scholarly literature that exist in PDF format. Though widely used most of the reference management softwares have no sophisticated Information retrieval except few which offer advanced search that includes search for title, author etc., These softwares in the present day market do not give importance to the semantic similarity or relatedness concept, query expansion and finding the context within the query to find the concept behind the user mentioned query. With SodhanaRef, a solution is offered to deal with the abovementioned issues by building reference management software using a mix up of corpusbased and knowledgebased semantic measures. Based on the evolution done on about 200 various scholarly literatures in the PDF form, SodhanaRef shows a good performance over Mendeley when compared between these two reference management softwares for title search. The other evaluations for finding the semantic similarity between the user mentioned query and the existing titles in the title search and for identifying the concept behind the query along with identifying the concept of a research publication have shown good results with an average precision between 0.8 to 1 for each query.
... Further, Cite Ulike and Mendeley also let users search the entire universe of references in their respective databases, making them tools for resource discovery. These two products also allow users to assign importance ratings to references and to use these as a sorting criterion (Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo,'2011). A few articles reported exclusively on contrasting, specific functions, such as database query capabilities (Gomis, Gall, & Brahmi, 2008). ...
This study compare reference managers (RMs) such as EndNote and Mendeley in the aspects such as capacity to import PDF and to harvest the bibliographic metadata from PDF and the functionalities such as modification of citation style, necessity of Internet connectivity and features in online applications. The methodology includes testing the capacity to import pdf and harvest metadata by uploading 350 pdf files and other functionalities were tested by performing them in both RMs. Findings showed that Mendeley is far more advanced in capacity to harvest metadata from PDF than EndNote and import bulk pdf files quickly than EndNote. However, modification of reference style in Mendeley is difficult task and it requires the knowledge on XML language while it is comparatively easy in EndNote. EndNote does not require internet connectivity to login while Menedely desktop require internet connectivity to login. However, Mendeley enable the users to work on any computer in a networked environment. Although online version of both RMs share common functionalities, each has its unique features. The EndNote has a feature to find best fit journal to publish our manuscript by inputting the title, abstract and references, while Mendeley functioning as social media, enabling collaboration among researchers of similar interest by creating research network, searching for funding opportunities, and share, store and publish our dataset and to access the free dataset.
... These include storing and annotating PDF files and citations, searching and sorting through citations and notes, organizing through folders or tagging, sharing references for teaching or project purposes, collaborating with colleagues through written documents and social networking, backing up of citations and notes online/into the cloud, and synchronizing work among devices. [1][2][3] Themes of interest reported by reference manager users in one qualitative study included avoiding plagiarism, backing up files, changing citation styles, creation of a personal library, and augmenting social networking. 4 The creation of a personal library has become integral to the working processes of the academic scholar. ...
Reference or citation managers aid in capturing and managing citations and associated full text, tracking references and citing them properly in manuscripts, and creating bibliographies. With more features than ever, selecting the most appropriate reference manager can be overwhelming for users and librarians. One common situation in which librarians are asked for advice involves building shared libraries of references to support collaborative group work. This project developed a structured evaluation for comparison of several common citation managers and prototypical use cases to help match features with user needs, preferences, and workflows. As products evolve and needs change, is there a “perfect fit”?
Reference management softwares are a powerful tool in the researchers’ armamentarium. They primarily help in re-sequencing, restyling and reformatting of the citation content in the research manuscripts. They also enable multi-user collaboration on research and allow the researcher to manage database searches and digital libraries. Using these softwares allows synchronization of cloud based digital libraries on multiple electronic devices enabling remote access, and also allows for management of online portfolios. We, herein, describe the basic principles, functions, and limitations of various reference management softwares.

The result of a research work is usually communicated by writing a report in which plagiarism and referencing system need to be carefully checked for compliance with the pre-defined standards and to make it original, well-formatted, and acceptable. Plagiarism is simply stealing other’s works, ideas, methods, outcomes, and interpretations without appropriately acknowledging the original source. It is considered one of the serious misconducts in any academic writing, and hence research reports should be plagiarism free or within the acceptable range of plagiarism. Referencing is another important aspect of academic writing that deals with acknowledging others’ works in an appropriate format. Some referencing styles are available that can vary in formatting guidelines. A report should conform to the prescribed guidelines of a style suggested by the journal or organization to which it is to be submitted. Therefore, acquiring adequate knowledge about referencing styles will greatly help young researchers, particularly undergraduate and postgraduate students, to write their research reports respecting the prescribed formats. A standard referencing system consists of the in-text citation and the list of all references at the end of the report. Several reference management software have been developed and used to make the references of a report conforming to the recommended style. Endnote is one such software that is widely used in all fields of academic research. This chapter provides insights into the principles of plagiarism and techniques for avoiding this academic crime from a research report. It also discusses the fundamentals of referencing in academic writing, referencing styles and approaches, reference management software, and recommended guidelines for each style with easy-to-understand examples.KeywordsAcademic writingPlagiarismPlagiarism checking toolsReferencingBibliographyReference management software

The scientific tradition entails that any scientific work needs to be cited if it is responsible for the development of further another research work. This review article discusses the role of library professionals in promoting Reference Management Tools (RMTs) amongst the teachers, students, and researchers to maintain the scientific tradition of citation management. Among the various citation management tools available, four exemplary tools have been discussed briefly. The review of the literature revealed that the users have mixed responses pertaining to the use of RMTs. Especially; the common experience in respect of quality usage is very low. The users seemed to have limited themselves to make use of RMTs for reference management instead of exploring all the options associated with it. An attempt has been made to highlight why and how librarians should promote RMTs in the academic environment. Since librarians are considered experts in the field of reference management, they must grab this opportunity to strengthen the profession. The article urges the library professionals to get expertise in using RMTs so as to promote them successfully for academic writing and research activities.

Citation management programs are tools used to organize references and to create citations and bibliographies. Libraries are often the central point for providing training and support in using these tools. To determine how we could improve our support and training services, we surveyed users to determine what software in being used, why they chose that particular program, what features are important, and how they use citation management programs to collaborate. Results indicate that users chose a particular program because it was freely available or recommended to them by others and that they thought that importing references and creating citations were important features. We also found a majority of respondents used citation management programs to collaborate and turned to the library for training and support.

There is a large amount of Information Technology and Communication (ITC) tools that surround scholar activity. The prominent place of the peer-review process upon publication has promoted a crowded market of technological tools in several formats. Despite this abundance, many tools are unexploited or underused because they are not known by the academic community. In this study, we explored the availability and characteristics of the assisting tools for the peer-reviewing process. The aim was to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the tools available at this time, and to hint at new trends for further developments. The result of an examination of literature assisted the creation of a novel taxonomy of types of software available in the market. This new classification is divided into nine categories as follows: (I) Identification and social media, (II) Academic search engines, (III) Journal-abstract matchmakers, (IV) Collaborative text editors, (V) Data visualization and analysis tools, (VI) Reference management, (VII) Proofreading and plagiarism detection, (VIII) Data archiving, and (IX) Scientometrics and Altmetrics. Considering these categories and their defining traits, a curated list of 220 software tools was completed using a crowdfunded database (AlternativeTo) to identify relevant programs and ongoing trends and perspectives of tools developed and used by scholars.
East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates the availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary differences.

As more information proliferates online, researchers often struggle to find an efficient way of managing their bibliographic data. Zotero presents an attractive alternative to proprietary citation tools as it is free, user-friendly, Web 2.0-compatible, and can be easily integrated with websites, online databases, catalogs, and repositories. Besides a brief review and comparative analysis of Zotero, the article highlights the science librarian's efforts to promote Zotero to students and faculty members in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. While his initial outreach attempt was to target the scientific community on campus, the author found other library advocates within other campus units. Training writing tutors at the Learning Assistance Center turned out to be a very effective means of creating more library advocates and Zotero evangelists across campus.
In the past, librarians taught reference management by training library users to use established software programs such as RefWorks or EndNote. In today's environment, there is a proliferation of Web-based programs that are being used by library clientele that offer a new twist on the well-known reference management programs. Basically, these new programs are PDF-manager software (e.g., Mendeley or Papers). Librarians are faced with new questions, issues, and concerns, given the new workflows and pathways that these PDF-manager programs present. This article takes a look at some of those.
