Orthotrichum gymnostomum Brid. is first reported from Calabria (Southern Italy); this is the first record of the species in the Mediterranean Area. In addition, six other species are reported as new to the Calabria region (Orthotrichum acuminatum H. Philib., O. alpestre Hornsch. ex Bruch, Schimp. & Gümbel, O. philibertii Venturi, O. scanicum Grönvall, O. stramineum Hornsch., and O. schimperi Hammar), while new localities are given for Orthotrichum anomalum Hedw., O. shawii Wilson, O. speciosum Nees, O. tenellum Brid., and Ulota crispa (Hedw.) Brid., most of which had not been reported for this area after 1950.

The species of Ulota s.l. rarely colonise the epiphytic environment under Mediterranean climates. After recent advances in taxonomic knowledge and consequent changes in the group, it was necessary to verify the identity of the Ulota species inhabiting the southernmost Mediterranean localities. A total of 18 localities in the southern areas of the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas were investigated. Ulota s.l. populations from nine of the areas were re-sampled, whereas for the remaining five other localities, available herbarium records were revised. Four additional localities, from where herbarium records have not been found, were visited without success. As a result, five species, namely Atlantichella calvescens, Ulota bruchii, U. crispa, U. crispula and U. intermedia, have been found in the study area. Their distribution in the different countries and localities sampled is shown to be irregular. Of note is the discovery of U. crispula, U. bruchii and U. intermedia in very southern areas of Portugal and Italy, as well as the discovery for the first time of A. calvescens in localities outside the Atlantic area, specifically in the central Mediterranean.

The bryophyte flora of Italy sums up 1191 species, 18 subspecies and 35 varieties. Among them, hornworts and liverworts are represented by 297 species, 5 subspecies and 4 varieties, united in 99 genera and 54 families, while mosses totalize 894 species, 13 subspecies and 31 varieties, grouped into 253 genera and 77 families. The lists include tabular distributional data by region, based on literature records and herbarium material, especially for rare and doubtful species. Similarly, it differentiates between reports before and after 1968, using the most recently published information when appropriate. Critical notes on distributional and taxonomical issues are included.
For the first time, the bryological flora of the Vatican City State has been studied. Research concentrated in particular in the area of the Vatican Gardens, and led to the identification of 121 taxa of bryophytes (14 liverworts and 107 mosses), among which one liverwort and nine moss species are new reports for the Lazio Region. Particularly interesting among these species is the presence of Tortula bolanderi (Lesq. & James) M. Howe, the first report for the Italian peninsula. The study is of considerable floristic and biogeographical importance, and contributes significantly to the knowledge of a territory that until now had been unexplored from the bryological point of view.

The names of all mosses published up to the end of August 2011 in the countries of the Mediterranean basin, the Macaronesian Islands and Bulgaria are compiled in an annotated checklist. The list comprises accepted names and synonyms, and provides explanatory annotations for ambiguous and disputed names. Literature references supporting the reports in each individual area are given only for taxa reported once or in a single locality. A total of 1168 accepted species and 81 infraspecific taxa are reported from the whole area.
An updated key for the identification of the 49 Orthotrichum s.l. taxa (45 species and 4 varieties) present in Europe, North Africa, Macaronesia and Western Asia, including the species in genus Nyholmiella, is provided. Orthotrichum leblebicii, described from Turkey, is synonymized with the Mediterranean O. vittii.

Based on a thorough review of the literature as well as floristic surveys undertaken over 20 years, a checklist of the bryophytes of Corsica, a mountainous western Mediterranean island, is presented. The occurrence of 17 liverwort and 44 moss species is documented for the first time from Corsica. As a result, the Corsican bryoflora includes 540 species: 148 liverworts, three hornworts and 389 mosses. Among the species reported, seven liverwort and 17 moss species are red-listed in Europe. By contrast with angiosperms, no bryophyte is endemic to the island based on traditional, phenetic species concepts. The number of new species reported here indicates that Corsica is exceedingly under-recorded bryologically. A better knowledge of the distribution, frequency and ecology of bryophyte species on the island is thus an absolute prerequisite in order to propose appropriate conservation measures in this Mediterranean environment that is, at least locally, severely threatened.

The Authors present a study of the bryological flora of some localities of Aspromonte (Calabria). A list of 128 taxa is given: 32 liverworts and 96 mosses; 20 species (5 liverworts and 15 mosses) are new findings for the Calabria region.

Some new and interesting Orthotrichumfrom Italy. Several records of interest are provided for Italy: Orthotrichum macrocephalum has been found in Sicily, and represents the first record for the country; O. rogeri, previously considered to be extinct in Italy, has been found in Tuscany; new locations are reported for O. shawii, which is now known to have a scattered distribution in the centre and south; finally, the true distribution of O. pulchellum is discussed, taking into consideration that the only currently known populations are those of Calabria, although there are also historical collections from Lombardy and Sicily.
