Abstract

The growth of the events industry brings with it concerns of sustainable management, the sharing of available resources, and ensuring that people and places are not over-exploited. While the environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability have attracted a reasonable attention in the study of events, the social and cultural aspects of sustainability have been largely neglected. This book brings together emerging critical perspectives, innovative conceptual frameworks and contemporary case studies. Events cannot be isolated from the actions of humans and this is reflected in the emphasis on people and society throughout. The next wave of sustainable discourse requires a critical synthesis of information and this book is the first to address the need for more critical approaches and a broader way of thinking about events and sustainability. Divided into five thematic parts, the contributions delve into understanding the mainstream stances towards sustainability, the role events play in indigenous cultures and in diasporic communities, and the extent to which events influence the public discourse and civic identity. Sustainability is also examined from a strategic perspective in the events sector, and consideration is given to issues such as corporate social responsibility, greenwashing, and the power of mulit-stakeholder alliances in promoting sustainability goals.
... Social sustainability, building on the concept of Bourdieu's social capital, refers to the conditions in and of societies that support human well-being, social interactions, and a sense of community (De Jong & Varley, 2018;Jepson & Clarke, 2014;Pernecky & Lueck, 2013). As Bourdieu (1986) stated, there exist three discrete yet interrelated types of capital: economic, cultural, and social. ...
... In the case of community festivals, social benefits are often understood in relation to economic benefits such as increased tourism arrivals, domestic attendance at events, a boost of the local economy, and job opportunities (Getz, 2005;Getz & Page, 2016). According to Pernecky and Lueck (2013), while dimensions of economic and environmental sustainability related to events have been widely studied, social sustainability aspects of events and festivals have been neglected. Food festivals are often perceived as active contributors to the attainment of broader societal and developmental objectives (De Jong & Varley, 2018;Haynes, 2015). ...
... The concept of social sustainability has gained increasing attention in event studies (Black, 2016;Mair & Smith, 2021;Pernecky & Lück, 2012;Smith, 2009;Stevenson, 2021). This trend reflects the growing maturity of the field and highlights the recognition of the complexity of events and their societal significance. ...
... Numerous scholars have discussed the sustainability of events and event tourism (e.g., Alananzeh, Al-Mkhadmeh, Shatnawi, & Masa' deh, 2022;Getz & Page, 2016;Lawton, 2011;Mair & Smith, 2021;Pernecky & Lück, 2013;Raj & Musgrave, 2009;Zamzuri, Azizi, & Hanafiah, 2023), while the scholarly discussions on the sustainability of academic conferences have been rather limited and not specifically focused on creativity. ...

Urban regeneration seeks to find and recrystallize the genome or the basis for the development of the functional and physical domain of the city. That is why event-led regeneration establishes a holistic approach that perpetuates content life and ensures the preservation and enhancement of physical quality by exploring, cataloging, consolidating, reviving, and updating events based on culture and religious background. Shiraz is one of the oldest urban abodes still inhabited in Iran. The historical process of its spatial structure has always been based on ritual-religious territorialism. Despite some dichotomies, the city has always consisted of a continuum of religious places. These conditions have changed in the contemporary era. Following the gradual trend of the domination of cities' modernization process, and has declined on the scale of what once took place in the context of the historic city. Recognition of the spatial composition and urban ritual structure and re-reading the background of the tradition that will accompany a list of complementary cultural events following today's conditions aims to regenerate the city's ritual structure and repair physical-spatial ruptures by continuing and consolidating historical-content richness. Developing and presenting solutions related to this process is a goal that has been considered in the present study. The conceptual framework of the research has been developed through a collection of previous studies. Also, the historical role of the public realm and the continuity of religious places in the city's main structure have been re-read. Then, a list of strategies related to event-based historical-cultural context has been compiled using the SOAR strategic model and ANSOFF matrix. Finally, a framework for strategic planning of the event-led regeneration of the city's historic structure with a generalizable approach is presented.

Culture always speaks to the history and meaning of place. Music festivals in particular carry considerable significance as they are produced through spatial and temporal processes that extend their symbolic and material meaning beyond their local settings. The onset of COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in Bristol intensified debates about festival diversity. Drawing on interviews with Bristol-based festival producers, this article examines popular music festivals and the places, communities and identities they represent. Rather than repeating the common criticism of festivals for being too white, we contribute to the debates by unravelling complex processes embedded within festival production. Using Lefebvre’s concept of conceived space, we argue that (racial) diversity is a spatial conundrum for music festivals. We demonstrate this through the way festival space is conceived: culturally – as it is framed within established music festival discourses; economically – through entrepreneurial networks of independent producers within local music cultures; socially – their ideals (including diversity), tastes and lifestyles inadvertently organise and represent particular symbolic and material formations of (racialised) identities and communities.
