Bridging the Gap – EuroTermBank Terminology Delivered to Users’ Environment
Abstract and Figures
The paper presents EuroTermBank Terminology Add-in – an innovative multilingual terminology translation tool. This tool integrates the federated terminology of the currently over 100 EuroTermBank terminology resources in Microsoft Word environment and accesses over 2 million terminology entries in 27 European languages. The new tool provides a range of functions necessary and useful for target user groups improving productivity and effectiveness in the process of translation. User feedback shows definite interest in the new tool which is considered to be extremely useful and efficient for translation needs. Beta versions of EuroTermBank Terminology Add-in for Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007 can be freely downloaded from the EuroTerm- Bank multilingual terminology portal.

This thesis addresses the issues and solutions involved when consolidating heterogeneous multilingual terminology resources that are dispersed throughout numerous collections, publications and databases to provide single access point for both human users and web-services. Online availability of consolidated terminology resources from diverse sources is of utmost importance in translation practice and domain specific communications. One of the major goals for consolidation is to provide a single unified web-based access to distributed multilingual terminology resources. Unified methodology has been developed covering all major aspects from scenario based requirements analysis to data modeling, data storage, exchange and representation. The federation approach proposed in this work allows the consolidation of various existing terminology databases and centrally stored resources. This thesis introduces a new concept of terminology entry compounding for identification and unification of matching multilingual entries from different collections. Application of international standards is discussed to ensure global interoperability of terminology resources and integration into global language resource infrastructure. The practical results from using these approaches in the development of the EuroTermBank terminology databank are described. For the first time heterogeneous multilingual terminology resources are integrated and database federation is established with a unified online interface, serving as a prove-of-concept for the approaches described in this work. In a world where people, goods, products, services, companies, and capital move globally, specialised communication and translation play a crucial role.
Legal translation is acknowledged as a complex and time-consuming task, mainly because it implies a transfer from one language to another, as well as from one legal system to another legal system. As legal concepts are culture-bound and not easily transferable, finding suitable equivalents is a source of constant problems for translators. Since existing terminological resources do not provide translators with enough information to make decisions without extensive searches and concept comparison, the main objective of this project is to create a systematic and descriptive bilingual terminology database in British English and European Portuguese in the domain of company law (company incorporation). The purpose is to understand needs in legal translation and find out what kind of information
legal translators require to make informed terminology decisions, as well as to understand and decide on the most suitable strategies for finding equivalents in legal translation. The methodology is corpus-driven, rather than concept-driven. We resort to comparable corpora, semi-automatic term extraction tools and concordance tools, as well as terminology management software. The result of this project is a complete termbase with 42 terms with all the information legal translators require: simple and clear efinitions, contexts, phraseology, and usage notes, collected from reliable sources. As for the best strategy to translate legal terminology, we conclude that a pragmatic approach is needed, and legal terminology should be translated
using the terminology of the target legal system. We conclude that terminology management is crucial for a specialised domain of knowledge like legal translation.

The workshop papers cover various topics on automated approaches to terminology extraction and creation of terminology resources, compiling multilingual terminology, ensuring interoperability and harmonization of terminology resources, integrating these resources in language processing applications, distributing and sharing terminology data and others.

This short paper addresses the problem of consolidating European multilingual terminology resources across languages and domains. In the intro-duction section we identify the task and the necessity of a consolidated interface for different, usually dispersed, multilingual terminology resources. In the se-cond section we give examples of state-of-the-art approaches to the solution of this task – the Quest tool and the EuroTermBank portal. The third section pre-sents a brief overview and reports on midterm results (achieved during the first year of the project) of an on-going research on consolidating European multi-lingual terminology resources as part of the ICT PSP EU project META-NORD within the META-NET initiative and the META-SHARE open linguistic infra-structure. Finally, we make conclusions and outline future work.
The paper describes an emerging trend for the next generation of terminology platforms. These platforms will serve not only as a source of semantically rich consolidated multilingual terminological data but will also provide a va-riety of online terminological services becom-ing part of a multifaceted global cloud-based service infrastructure. As an example demon-strating this trend we describe the develop-ment of terminology services for the Eu-roTermBank database.
In general, language workers spend a lot of their working time inefficiently on terminology management, searching and processing information from multiple sources (based locally and online), copying/pasting information or changing its format to the one they require in their work environment. Nowadays, when the amount of content to be translated is growing exponentially, an efficient terminology management solution is a must both for content creation and its translation. One of the major efforts is consolidated terminology resources, such as EuroTermBank - a centralized online publicly available terminology database for 27 EU languages. In 2009 a free innovative multilingual terminology translation tool – EuroTermBank Terminology Add-in – was developed. It integrates EuroTermBank terminology resources into Microsoft Word 2003 / 2007 and provides a range of functions necessary and useful for end users.
Consistent, harmonized and easily accessible terminology is an extremely important stronghold for ensuring true multilingualism in the European Union and throughout the world. From legislation and trade to the needs and mobility of each individual, terminology is the key for easy, fast and reliable communications. The rapid path of changes in technologies and the global economy leads to ever growing introduction of new concepts and terms to describe them. Globalization from the one side and growing language awareness from the other side dictate the need to consolidate national terminology resources, harmonize international terminology, and provide online access to reliable multilingual terminology. This publication summarizes the experiences and findings of the EuroTermBank project, part of the European Union eContent program. It is aimed at individuals and organizations interested and involved in all aspects of terminology management.
This paper addresses the problem of consolidation of multilingual terminology resources that are dispersed among numerous collections, publications and databases. It proposes a standards-based approach for providing single unified web-based access to distributed multilingual terminology data. This federation approach supports consolidation of different established terminology databases and centrally stored resources. This paper introduces terminology entry compounding for identification and consolidation of matching multilingual entries from different collections. Practical results from using these approaches in EuroTermBank project are described as well as future development directions are pointed out for expanding EuroTermBank into the global access point for unified multilingual terminology.
The IATE project was launched in early 2000 for the creation of a single central terminology database for all the institutions, agencies and other bodies of the European Union. By mid-2001, it had reached the prototype phase. It is evident that the attempt of uniting the terminology that has been created in different institutions, with different approaches to terminology and different working cultures, was not an easy task. Although the implementation of the system has, from a technical point of view, already reached a rather advanced stage it is predictable that user feedback during the prototype and pilot phases will still lead to a number of changes. The biggest challenge of the project, however, lies in its introduction in the terminology and translation workflow of the participating bodies. This is illustrated in the second part of the paper by the example of the European Parliament's Translation Service.
