Abstract

Purpose This paper seeks to present a best practice guide to using analytics as a tool for leaders at every organizational level to drive their companies towards better decision making. Design/methodology/approach The piece is based on the book Analytics at Work by Thomas Davenport, Jeanne Harris and Robert Morison, which was published in 2010. Findings Accenture research shows conclusively that high‐performing businesses have a much more developed analytical orientation than other organizations. In fact they are five times more likely than their competitors to view analytical capabilities as being core to the business. Practical implications Senior executives are playing a crucial role in moving their organizations towards analytical decision making. Experience shows that, if leaders support analytical initiatives, they are much more likely to succeed. This is partly because of the powerful influence they exert over business culture, and partly because they can deploy the people, money and time needed to develop effective analytics capabilities. That said, senior executives are not the only people needed to build an analytical business. Almost any employee can play a vital role as an analytical leader. Originality/value Accenture uses case studies based on in‐depth interviews and thought leadership to demonstrate how individuals at different organizational levels have succeeded in driving their business towards analytical decision making – with impressive results.

In today's dynamic and challenging business landscape, organizations encounter numerous obstacles that impede efficient operations. To surmount these challenges, organizations must adopt novel strategies, with Business Intelligence (BI) emerging as a favored approach. However, BI implementation is underpinned by diverse frameworks, causing uncertainty in identifying the driving forces behind organizational adoption. This research addresses this gap by proposing enhanced Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework called “(OCKTUEES) framework” by looking at more factors such as Organization, Complex, Knowledge, Technology, User Experience, Economical, Environment, and Social. This framework encompasses eight pivotal factors that influence the adoption of BI within organizations. The proposed framework was validated through extensive literature review in identifying influencing factors and independent variables. This paper not only furnishes organizations with a fresh framework replete with invaluable drivers but also furnishes a focal point as they embark on their BI or even any technology adoption journey

Business intelligence (BI) is a vital component for businesses of all scales, offering actionable insights crucial for timely decision-making. This technology has become integral across diverse enterprises. Recognizing the factors influencing BI adoption is imperative, and this article employs the organization, complexity, knowledge, technology, user perception and experience, economic, environmental, and social (OCKTUEES) framework to identify key aspects. Building upon the TOE framework, it pinpoints significant variables, emphasizing the importance of factors like user perception and experience, technology, social, economical, and environmental. Employing structural equation modelling on primary data yields actionable insights to address BI adoption challenges. Analysis reveals the user perception and experience, technology, social, economic, and environmental as the top factors. However, the organization appears vulnerable, necessitating a mitigation strategy for successful BI adoption. The study predicts insignificant variables requiring mitigation, such as high costs, inadequate resources, organizational size, security and privacy concerns, risk of open-source adoption, and perception of analytics impacting jobs. Artificial intelligence (AI) in sustainable businesses has attracted interest in various industries. However,research on the sustainable adoption of AI is scarce. The present research contributes to this gap by investigating the benefits of AI for sustainable businesses. Qualitative content analysis was used to investigate twenty-five of the largest Finnish enterprises. In the years 2017–2021, AI was employed in twenty of these enterprises, sixteen of which relied on AI to obtain benefits associated with sustainable business practices. Based on the sample, AI can be perceived as a generalizing technology in Finland. Additionally, the strategic significance of AI for enterprises has been discovered to be increasing. The research results indicate that AI deployment was driven primarily by two interlinked aims: 1) optimization and 2) the pursuit of benefits in various dimensions of sustainable business.

A theoretical review of business acumen and social capital was conducted that would apply to human resource management practice to identify the desired behaviour of high-performing human resource professionals. The links of intellectual capital to human capital and organisation capital are necessary to contextualise social capital and its link with human capital resources and business acumen. A conceptual framework was proposed, consisting of business aspects, personal attributes and relationships to enhance human resource professionals’ business acumen. HR business acumen consists mainly of business aspects, personal attributes and relationships to enhance social capital. Specific business aspects involve thinking, knowledge, orientation and skills. An HR professional needs to possess executive-level thinking and systems thinking. They also must have business knowledge, a strategic orientation and skills such as financial literacy and being able to do metrics. Personal attributes such as agility, attitude, innovation, creativity, leadership, trustworthiness and responsiveness are of the essence. Lastly, relationships entail shared norms and values, trust, engagement and collaboration.

The ability to optimize serving business processes while satisfying customer expectations has never been more critical than in today's globalized business world. Therefore, managing and channeling business operational data to work towards customer delight and generate healthy profits is essential to survive prosperously. Practitioners are highlighting the benefits of retail data analytics that are now being applied at every stage of the business process - tracking emerging popular products, forecasting sales, and future demand through predictive intelligence by using intelligent techniques. The chapter focuses on big data analytics software systems, their testing, and quality assurance-related issues in Hadoop, an open-source framework. It discusses challenges concerning massively parallel data generation from multiple sources, data characterization, software application quality factors, and some software testing mechanisms.

The findings underscore the prominence of Perception and User Experience, Technology, Social Dynamics, Economic Viability, and Environmental Considerations as the top five influential drivers among the eight factors investigated. Diverging from existing frameworks like Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE), Model of Adoption (MOA), Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), and Resource-Based View (RBV), the OCKTUEES framework offers a more comprehensive array of constructs and meticulously reorganized variables. This paper not only furnishes organizations with a fresh framework replete with invaluable drivers but also furnishes a focal point as they embark on their business intelligence or any technology adoption journey.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a produção acadêmica internacional sobre business analytics (abordagem analítica) obtida em periódicos internacionais disponíveis em sete base de dados. A pesquisa pretende contribuir auxiliando pesquisadores e profissionais interessados no tema com um panorama dos estudos já realizados. A pesquisa avaliou publicações no período entre 2004 e 2016, utilizando-se de técnicas bibliométricas para investigar 47 artigos. Dentre os achados da pesquisa, está que empresas atualmente veem na orientação analítica a oportunidade para obter resultados superiores de desempenho.
