THE CORROSION and PROTECTION CENTRE AT U.M.I.S.T.: I: Corrosion education

In April 1972, Corrosion and Protection Centre was established at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, based upon the former Corrosion Science Division of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Simultaneously, the appointment of a Professor of Corrosion Science, Britain's first such chair, was announced. Professor G. C. Wood, formerly Reader in Corrosion Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering, was elected to this Chair. We shall attempt to outline, in a series of brief articles, the reasons for the establishment of the Centre and to describe the approach adopted by the Centre to its three main areas of activity in corrosion and protection, namely education, research and advice and assistance to industry.

First, a brief outline of corrosion and corrosion protection, with emphasis on organic coatings, is given to provide the context of the work. This is followed by the concept of self-healing coatings. The principles of SVET and SIET are then presented, together with selected examples of their use. The chapter closes with a discussion on the strategies to probe healing processes and a review of published work.

These examples include the application of ion beam mixing and ion-beam-assisted vapour deposition to (i) the prevention of localized corrosion, (ii) the reduction of hydrogen uptake by metals (the formation of “migration barriers”), (iii) corrosion protection by means of ion-beam-mixed monolayers and multilayers of aluminium and boron and (iv) ion-beam-modified carbon layers and their influence on the corrosion of mild steel. Corrosion protection by vapour-deposited and laser-fused SiO2 coatings

SiO2 coatings have been applied to Incoloy 800H samples by two methods, namely plasma-assisted vapour deposition (PAVD) and laser fusion. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was assessed in oxidizing, sulphidizing and carburizing environments. At higher temperatures, however, increasing recrystalization of the coating resulted in failure. Thicker coatings (50–200 μm) produced by the laser fusion of oxide crystallites are still at an early stage of development. Mixed coatings of SiO2 and Cr2O3 were formed as a consequence of oxidation processes during coating, and initial tests have given encouraging results in sulphidizing and oxidizing environments.

Development of Cast Alumina-Forming Austenitic Stainless Steels

[Show full abstract] creep strength comparable to existing cast chromia-forming alloys is challenging. This work outlines the development of cast Fe-Ni-Cr-Al austenitic stainless steels containing about 25 wt.% Ni with good creep strength and the ability to form a protective alumina scale for use at temperatures up to 800–850°C in H2O-, S-, and C-containing environments. Creep properties of the best alloy were comparable to that of HK-type cast chromia-forming alloys along with improved oxidation resistance typical of alumina-forming alloys. Challenges in the design of cast alloys and a potential path to increasing the temperature capability are discussed.

This work investigates the possibility of improving the corrosion resistance of rotating copper parts in a solution of NaCl and Na 2 S by using one of triazole derivatives namely 4-Amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole (AHT) as corrosion inhibitor. [Show full abstract] S-2 concentration, rotating copper diameter, solution temperature and initial AHT inhibitor concentration. The results showed that AHT inhibitor can improve the corrosion resistance of rotating copper parts by a factor ranging from1.30 to 1.66 depending on AHT inhibitor concentration and rotational speed. The results show that the activation energy for corrosion of copper in 3.5% sodium chloride solution and 10ppm S-2 without the inhibitor ranges from 0.7 to 1.07kCal/gmol while it ranges from 1.879 to 3.366kCal/gmol in the presence of 10ppm of AHT corrosion inhibitor depending on the rotational speed which indicate that the process is mainly diffusion controlled.
