The spectrum of pathological changes in anatomical sections of the hypopharynx ranges from benign pathologies to hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Beside the clinical status and the endoscopic evaluation performed by ear, nose and throat specialists, imaging techniques play an important role in pre-therapeutic and post-therapeutic diagnostics and in the follow-up of pharyngeal disease patterns, especially for malignant lesions. A conventional x-ray swallow examination, contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as positron emission tomography (PET) and positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) are applied depending on the medical question and disease. Especially in radiological oncology, it is extremely important in regions which are clinically difficult to assess to determine the exact localization and extent of hypopharyngeal pathologies to plan the optimal therapy for the patient. This article demonstrates the radiological appearance of pathological changes of the hypopharynx and discusses in particular the hypopharynx carcinoma in the focus of pre-therapeutic and post-therapeutic imaging.

    ABSTRACT: Laryngeal cancer is more common in males. The present study is aimed at exploration of potential of conventional Raman spectroscopy in classifying normal from a malignant laryngopharyngeal tissue. We have recorded Raman spectra of twenty tissues (aryepiglottic fold) using an in-house built Raman setup. The spectral features of mean malignant spectrum suggests abundance proteins whereas spectral features of mean normal spectrum indicate redundancy of lipids. PCA was employed as discriminating algorithm. Both, unsupervised and supervised modes of analysis as well as match/mismatch "limit test" methodology yielded clear classification among tissue types. The findings of this study demonstrate the efficacy of conventional Raman spectroscopy in classification of normal and malignant laryngopharyngeal tissues. A rigorous evaluation of the models with development of suitable fibreoptic probe may enable real-time Raman spectroscopic diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal cancers in future.

    ABSTRACT: Zur klinischen Einordnung eines Karzinoms der oberen Atemwege in eine T-Kategorie spielt neben der klinisch-endoskopischen Beurteilung die Schnittbildgebung mittels Computertomographie (CT) und Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) zur Darstellung der klinisch in den meisten Fällen nur unzureichend beurteilbaren Tiefenausbreitung bzw. -infiltration eine entscheidende Rolle. Anhand dieser Darstellung bzw. der radiologischen Beurteilung erfolgt unter Berücksichtigung des klinischen Befundes und des Tumorstadiums die Wahl der anzustrebenden, bestmöglichen Therapie. Aufgrund der komplexen anatomischen Verhältnisse im Kopf-Hals-Bereich ist diese radiologische Beurteilung keineswegs trivial, weshalb dieser Artikel die für die Tumorausbreitung und Therapieentscheidung wichtigsten anatomischen Beziehungen aufzeigt.
