Factors determining the guessing of meaning of foreign words

6 groups of 40 English-speaking Ss judged the equivalence of 50 pairs of frequently used English, Chinese, Japanese, and Hebrew words presented auditorily, audio-visually, and visually. Ss guessed the English equivalent of Hebrew words and paired Japanese and Chinese, and Japanese and Hebrew words at better than chance levels. The Animosity Model of Foreign Product Purchase: An Empirical Test in the People's Republic of China

In contrast to Shimp and Sharma's (1987) CETSCALE, the model predicts that animosity toward a foreign nation will affect negatively the purchase of products produced by that country independently of judgments of product quality. Structural equation modeling supports the model and shows that animosity has a significant impact on buying decisions above and beyond the effect of consumer ethnocentrism. Furthermore, these results were not cohort-specific. The measurement of cross-national hostility enables managers to understand better the purchase behavior of consumers in the international marketplace.

[Show full abstract] form-focused tasks (an auditory GJT, a visual GJT, and a fill in the blank test) were hypothesized to measure automatized explicit knowledge, three real-time comprehension tasks (a visual-world task, a word-monitoring task, and a self-paced reading task) were hypothesized to measure implicit knowledge. One hundred advanced L2 Japanese learners with first language Chinese residing in Japan took all six tests. Confirmatory factor analysis and multitrait-multimethod analysis provided an array of evidence supporting that these tests assessed two types of linguistic knowledge separately with little influence from the method effects. The results analyzed separately by length of residence in Japan (a proxy for the amount of naturalistic L2 exposure) showed that learners with longer residence in Japan can draw on implicit knowledge in the real-time comprehension tasks with more stability than those with shorter residence. These findings indicate the potential of finely tuned real-time comprehension tasks as measures of implicit knowledge.

The subjects are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean adult native Speakers whose languages employ pre-nominal RC formation strategy, a sharp contrast with the post-nominal strategy of English. The findings of this study support the dominance of language universals in the course of language acquisition regardless of particular languages' specificities. Additionally, universals are seen to be accessible to both adults and children, and they remain intact maturationally (cf. Bley-Vroman, R. W., Felix, S. W., and loup, G. L, 1988; and duPlessis, J., Solin, D., Travis, L. and White, L, 1987).

Mistake detection method in Chinese-Japanese translation for Japanese learning support

When Chinese students study Japanese, they sometimes find it difficult to understand the grammar of Japanese correctly because Chinese and Japanese use the same Chinese characters in a different way. Our research focuses on the students' exercises of translating Chinese sentences into Japanese, and enables students to acquire correct knowledge based on translated sentences. [Show full abstract] our Chinese-Japanese translation process is divided into three steps: translation of words, ordering of words, and addition of functional expressions to complete the sentence. The system compares translated sentences written by students with the correct answer preset in the system and specifies the step in which students might be mistaken. Then, the system gives a result of evaluating the translated sentence with the explanation of incorrect translation. Since the usage of Japanese functional expressions is the most difficult for the Chinese students translating a sentence, our system supports students learning Japanese functional expressions by considering the factors of the mistaken functional expressions. According to the mistake information, the system selects another question from the question database, which has the same factor as the mistaken functional expression. Experimental results showed that our system was effective in detecting the mistakes, especially mistakes of words and Japanese functional expressions.
