The edge-on galaxies NGC 891, 3079, 3556, 4631, and 7331 have been
observed at 10.7 GHz (2.8 cm). The 'z' distribution of the radio
continuum is studied, resulting in the conclusion that two galaxies show
emission in the form of a thick disk. By comparison with synthesis maps
at lower frequencies with similar angular resolution and sensitivity,
the spectral index variation perpendicular to the
... [Show full abstract] disk is studied. The
steepening of the spectrum in the 'z' direction is less than previously
believed. The well determined total flux density determinations allow
studies of the integrated spectra of the galaxies. In only one case, NGC
4631, the integrated spectrum exhibits a spectral break. In retrospect,
the edge-on galaxy NGC 4631 appears to have a radio morphology which is
unique in the present sample.
