Interactions Involving Plants, Homoptera, And Ants

Abstract

Many of the world's major plant pests are Homoptera, and many of the worst crop diseases are transmitted by this group. Some Homoptera are tended and defended by ants; others are attacked and eaten. Plant-homopteran-ant interactions can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, and are further affected by other organisms and biotic factors. The manipulation of ant assemblages to control homopteran pests often becomes a crucial element in integrated pest control strategies, and in more general terms manipulation of the system permits examination of the cology and evolution of inter-species interactions. Intraspecific variation and higher-order interactions become critical components of such studies.-P.J.Jarvis
