Developing a Product Innovation and Technology Strategy for Your Business

Authors:

Abstract

Many companies lack a clearly articulated and well-communicated product innovation and technology strategy. Such a strategy is essential and is strongly linked to positive performance in product innovation. A framework for developing a product innovation strategy is presented, and the various steps of strategy development are described, from best-practice ways to define innovation goals and objectives through to the selection of strategic arenas and the development of the strategic map. Defining attack plans and entry strategies are also described. Finally, methods for resource allocation and deployment using strategic buckets and strategic roadmaps are outlined.

Purpose- In order to survive, enterprises need to adapt their existing capacities and capabilities to changes in the environment, organize to meet the demands of their stakeholders, and develop sustainable competitive strategies. Because of this necessity, enterprises are trying to make innovations in their value creation constructs. The main purpose of this study is to try to understand the renewal of value creation activities, which has a significant impact on business performance, in an environment of technological turbulences that lead to threats or opportunities for enterprises. Methodology-This study examines value creation activities within the framework of the concepts of collective commitment between employees and organizational performance in the organization, through a model developed based on the findings in the relevant literature. The study was carried out in Turkey, which is trying to update its existing products and services according to the demands of its customers by using advanced technologies instead of improving technology. The data for the study were collected from the organizations that are involved in research and development activities and benefit from government incentives for this by using a questionnaire created originally. Findings- According to the analysis, regardless of the lines of business, both collective commitment positively affects the renewal of value creation activities of the enterprise and the renewal of value creation activities positively affects the performance of enterprises. Although technological turbulences in the market strengthen the relationship between collective commitment and renewal of value creation activities in labor-intensive lines of business, this effect was not observed in technology-intensive lines of business. Conclusion- As a result, it is understood that the perception of environmental factors such as technological turbulences as threats or opportunities and the renewal of value creation activities in enterprises are closely related. The findings of this research conducted in Turkey, which is influenced by both eastern and western cultures, will be important both for businesses operating in Turkey and in similar countries trying to get out of the developing country position.

Gaining competitiveness in the quota free trade has become a driving force for the apparel companies to adopt changes in technology and organizations to enhance productivity. While global expansion of the apparel industry historically has been driven by trade policy, by 2005, the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC) by the World Trade Organization had phased out many of the quotas that had previously regulated the world apparel industry. This caused a tremendous change in the global geography of apparel manufacturing and trade, and a restructuring of company strategies seeking to realign their manufacturing and sourcing networks to accommodate new economic and political realities. This change has brought other key factors for country competitiveness to the forefront, including labour costs, productivity, and competencies. Countries where the cost of labour is low are emerging as leaders in the lower-value assembly segments of the value chain, while countries with higher labour cost are being forced to upgrade into higher-value segments, such as branding and design that rely on high-quality human capital to maintain their competitiveness. As a result, skills of the work force in the apparel industry will become increasingly important element for developing economies to maintain and upgrade their positions in the global apparel value chain. The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of Sri Lankan apparel industry and challenges it faced in different eras and based on the experience gained propose recommendations to face the futuristic challenges of the world apparel trade based on the diamond model for competitive advantage of nations as proposed by Michael Porter.
... The key four important characteristics of TCF are technological advancement (Healy et al., 2018), unique technology features (Aleixo and Tenera, 2009), better technology attributes (Sanayei, 2016), and automation (Cooper and Edgett, 2010). Customer-Centric Focus (CCF) for SMEs' NPD is greatly influenced by TCF features and organizational influences (customer service and corporate image). ...

Despite Multinational Enterprises’ growing interest in New Product Development (NPD), research into the use of social media in the NPD process in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) is lacking. In response, we propose and test an integrated model of the NPD process using social media. Data was collected from SMEs across industry sectors in India during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research applies structural equation modeling (SEM) to achieve a detailed understanding of the issue. The findings reveal that Integrated Social Media Interaction (ISMI) depends on Customer-Centric Focus (CCF), Customer Engagement Focus (CEF), and Customer Empathy Focus (CEmF). Based on the literature and our analytical research, it is revealed that the use of social media networks as a source of knowledge for NPD ventures is a systematic component of the NPD process for SMEs during the COVOD-19 pandemic. To support their NPD initiatives, SMEs may depend on this hypothesized integrated model. The analysis concludes with SME managers' realistic and managerial guidance. This study provides useful insights for managers who wish to enhance NPD activities for SMEs through social media, and offers useful guidance to SMEs and innovation scholars, encouraging further research in this area.

This first of three articles reports the results of the most recent American Productivity and Quality Center study on performance and best practices in new product development. Performance results achieved on a number of NPD metrics are reported first, followed by a set of Best Performing businesses, wha t these businesses ha ve in common and—most important—what differentiates them from the rest. This first article focuses on the " people side" of NPD—on how project teams are organized and on other winning characteristics of teams. The climate and culture for innovation within the business proves to be one of the strongest drivers of NPD performance, and the specifics of what the Best Performers have done to achieve this positive climate are outlined. Finally the role of senior management in setting the stage for the business's NPD effort is examined.

An overview of roadmaps and roadmapping activities in a corporation is presented. Roadmaps have been in use in this context for about a decade, but their role is limited in many corporations. Areas of improvement include roadmapping across corporate boundaries with customers and suppliers, building of database of roadmapping information that can be used to jump-start a roadmapping team developing a new product, and just the simple practice of providing discipline and focus to the planning process.
