The Movement for Reconstructing Identity through Shamanism: A Case Study of the Aga-Buryats in Postsocialist Mongolia

Abstract

This paper focuses on the Aga-Buryats of Dornod province, a Mongol minority group in post-socialist Mongolia, and examines the role shamanism played in reconstructing their ethnic identity throughout their cultural revival movement. The paper stresses the socio-psychological aspects: their identity crisis after the collapse of the socialist regime and the role played by shamanism in dealing with this crisis and in reconstructing the Aga-Buryat ethnic identity.

Shamans,Jong considered extinct,havenotonly re−emerged,buthave
beenincreaslngraPidlyamongtheAga−BuryatsinDomodprovincesincethe
democratisationofJ990(Shimamura2002a).
TheBuryatshavehistoricaIlyHvedaroundtheLakeBaikalareawherethe
SiberiantalgaandMongoliansteppemeet.Thisareaisthenorthernfrontier
OftheMongoIworId.Attheendoftheseventeenthcentury,theBuryatscame
underthecontroloHmperialRussia.
AftertheRussianOctoberRevolutjonbeganin1917,COnLlictbetweenlもarist
fbrcesandtheRedArmycausedanarchyaroundtheLakeBaikalarea.hthese
ChaoticandtragJCCircumstances,SOmeOftheAgaandKhoriBul●yatsdecidedto

Mongo]shavebeenBuddhistsincetheseventeenthcentury,andexceptforthe
Buryats,Shamanismhasonlybeenr℃tajnedamongtheDarkhadsofKhovsgo】
PrOVinceandtheAltai−UryankhaiofKhovdprovinceidMongolia,aSWdlas
theDauトMongoIsandHorchinMongolsinChina(HumphreyandOnonJ999).
ButincomparisonwiththenewshamansamongtheAga−BuryatsinDornod,
thenumberofshamanseJsewhireisrelativeJysmaH.Accordingtomyresearch
OntheDarkhadsin1997,therewereon]y5sha血ansamongagroupwhose
POPulationwas14,757in1989(SSOM1994:37).
OnepossibleexplanationfortheincreaslngnumberOfshamansmightbeto
describethisasareactiontothereligiousoppressionofthecommunistperiod.
ButthisexplanationcannotaccountforthemuchsmalJernumberofshamans
amongtheDarkhadoIUryankhaidespitethesamとhistoryofreligiotlSOPPreS−
Sion.WtmustseekadifferentsortofansweI二
ttisremarkabJethattherevivalofBuryatshamanjsmisnotcon伽edto
Mongolia,butitjsaphenomenon苧eenaCrOSSthenationalborders・Inrecent
yearsmanyBuryatsfromRussiatravelledtoDornodprovincebyjeeps,and
underwentshamanicinitiationundertheguidanceofMongolianBuryatmaster
Shamans(bagshb∂∂).Someofthesemastershamanshavealsobeerlinvitedto
traveltoRussianBuryatiatoperforminitiations・DornodprovinceofMongolia
istheepJCentreforshamanicproIiferationamongdisperSedAga−Buryats.
ItisholVeVerincorrecttodescribetheproHferationofshamansasa‘revival’
Ofapasttradition.T.M.MikhaHov’S(1987)studyofBuryatshamanismshows
thatBuryat!inthedistrictofChita(WhichincIudesAgadistrict)havebeen
StrOnglyinRuencedbyTibetanBuddhism,andthattheyhadthefewestnumber
OfshamanscomparedwithotherBuryatdistrictsaccordingtothecensusof1897
(MikhaHov1987:198).ltisclearthatthisisanewmovement.

The case study in this paper is on the Daur (as well as the Evenki, Buriat, and Bargu Mongols) in Hulun Buir, Northeast China. The aim of this research is to examine how shamanic rituals function as a conduit to actualize communications between the clan members and their shaman ancestors. Through examinations and observations of Daur and other Indigenous shamanic rituals in Northeast China, this paper argues that the human construction of the shamanic landscape brings humans, other-than-humans, and things together into social relations in shamanic ontologies. Inter-human metamorphosis is crucial to Indigenous self-conceptualization and identity. Through rituals, ancestor spirits are active actors involved in almost every aspect of modern human social life among these Indigenous peoples.

The paper explores Buddhism and urbanisation in post-Soviet Buryatia (Russian Federation). While post-socialist religious revivals have often been discussed by scholars as questions of temporality, this paper suggests that they might also be seen as spatial reconfigurations. Seen in this way, a Buryat Buddhist religious revival might be perceived as an unfinished religious expansion, absorbing new spaces and appropriating them along the way. In this light, and to local Buddhists, the city is a new territory that is subject to a continuing religious intervention, making it less hostile and more manageable in the new – and difficult – urban condition. This religious intervention is discussed here as ‘taming the city’, and it provides basis for a rethinking of post-socialist religious resurgence in the region as a spatio-temporal process. These spatial aspects are entwined with social ones amidst ongoing religious change, as shifting religious topography interplays with transforming social, economic and political conditions.

Socialist regimes lead by the Soviet Union were one of the great experiments for human life “without religions”. In Mongolia, as in other socialist countries, modernity was constructed by expelling religious practices from the sphere of everyday life in the name of atheism. However, modernity has never completely succeeded in fully establishing secularization anywhere in the world, and the phenomena of magico-religious practices continue and even are rampant, not least behind the facades in post-socialist countries. In other words, it can be said that the affiliation between secularization, de-sacralization, and modernity, which many scholars imagined, was just fantasy. Following the way in which Talal Asad examines the “novel” form of secularism present in Euro-American societies, it becomes quite easy to understand that socialist modernity was formulated as the “novel secular” by the Soviet Union. While examining Soviet-style atheism or Soviet-formed secularization, we need to rethink the practices that are “in between” the religious and the secular. Mongols have been practicing religion secularly. We see this in how selecting reincarnated lamas has been a political act, and in the way they have been practicing secular politics so religiously – for example, the importance of fortune telling and shamanism in political decision-making. Further, we need to note that the socialist expulsion of institutional aspects of religions such as churches, clergies, and religious scriptures resulted in the spread of magical/occult practices. In this paper we explore Mongol practices that are in between the religious and the secular by examining Buddhist practices in Zavkhan Province, where people maintained strong worship for reincarnated lamas secretly and in disguise during the socialist era.

In contemporary Mongolia—a country with 29 years’ history of international development policy—the conventional interpretation regarding the oppression of and liberation from the Soviet regime is no longer valid for understanding its politics of cultural heritage. Today, development projects and associated environmental, social and cultural assessments play a central role in safeguarding cultural heritage. Therefore, alternative interpretations are necessary to comprehend current and further processes of cultural heritage politics. This paper introduces two case studies of new cultural heritage politics involving Mongolia’s two ‘megaprojects’: Oyu Tolgoi gold and copper mining, and River Eg hydroelectric station.

This article takes its point of departure in a Duha woman's struggle to become a shaman among the Duha reindeer nomads of northern Mongolia. It explores how the Duha considered her initiation as a shaman as blocked by the presence of "bad things" and lack of suitable things in her shamanic costume. Inspired by the "ontological turn" in anthropology I propose that the Duha concept of "bad thing" can only be fully understood by locating it in the local shamanic ontology of the Duha. The thesis of the article is that the shamanic ontology of the Duha is embedded in the religious amulets of their shamanic lineages, where the amulets of each lineage are considered to contain their own unique nature, which shapes the nature of things in the world for each lineage. The presence of "bad things" seems to make the shared ethos of the Duha, "the natural law", visible as its general principles are engaged to understand why certain things may be bad for certain persons. The challenge of the future shaman is to uncover the nature of the amulets of her shamanic lineage in order to understand the true nature of things in her world. Duha ontology seems to be an ontology of multiple worlds, since the nature of the world is different from one lineage to the other. I propose that the contents of these worlds are not fixed but are continually created and recreated in a dialectic between knowledge, "absence of knowledge" and rumors.

Sinophobia is a timely and groundbreaking study of the anti-Chinese sentiments currently widespread in Mongolia. Violent anti-Chinese feelings are frequently explained as a consequence of China’s meteoric economic development, a cause of much anxiety for her immediate neighbors and particularly for Mongolia, a large but sparsely populated country that is rich in mineral resources. Other analysts point to deeply entrenched antagonisms and to centuries of hostility between the two groups, implying unbridgeable cultural differences. Franck Billé challenges these reductive explanations. Through an in-depth analysis of media discourses, Billé shows how stereotypes of the Chinese emerged through an internalization of Russian ideas of Asia, and how they can easily extend to other Asian groups such as Koreans or Vietnamese. He argues that the anti-Chinese attitudes of Mongols reflect an essential desire to distance themselves from Asia overall and to reject their own Asianness. The spectral presence of China, imagined to be everywhere and potentially in everyone, thus produces a pervasive climate of mistrust, suspicion, and paranoia.

Innovation-making is a classic theme in anthropology that reveals how people fine-tune their ontologies, live in the world and conceive of it as they do. This ethnographic study is an entrance into the world of Buryat Mongol divination, where a group of cursed shamans undertake the 'race against time' to produce innovative remedies that will improve their fallen fortunes at an unconventional pace. Drawing on parallels between social anthropology and chaos theory, the author gives an in-depth account of how Buryat shamans and their notion of fortune operate as 'strange attractors' who propagate the ongoing process of innovation-making. With its view into this long-term 'cursing war' between two shamanic factions in a rural Mongolian district, and the comparative findings on cursing in rural China, this book is a needed resource for anyone with an interest in the anthropology of religion, shamanism, witchcraft and genealogical change.

The article first outlines how ‘remoteness’ was conceived and constructed during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods in Russia. Using the ideas of the social geographer Boris Rodoman, it argues that centric structures of power, communications and state provision created scalar zones of non-development and isolation at borders between internal administrative regions. In post-Soviet times this structure continued, but according to Vladimir Kagansky it has been disturbed by recent ‘spontaneous transformations’ whereby state international borders are becoming areas of contact and enterprise, rather than isolation. The paper suggests to the contrary that, with the increasing centralisation of the Putin era, Kagansky’s theory has not been realised on the Russia-Mongolia-China border, and that the reduction of border crossing points in fact deepen the residents’ sense of being situated ‘at a dead end’. However, the indigenous people living in border zones, notably the Buryat, operate not only with these state-constructed geographies, but also with their own quite different spatial concepts. These are so much the converse to the Russian that they can be seen as a distinctive minoritized vision. The Buryat ideas and ritual practices reach across political boundaries. In effect they create a subtle challenge to the spatiality of the Russian state. It is argued that roads in this situation become particularly concentrated vectors of contradictory values.

This paper attempts to rethink the relationship between the practice of shamanism and the political-economic ‘context’ it is held to emerge from in contemporary Mongolia. In the face of an extraordinary ‘revival’ in shamanism, anthropologists have sought explanations for the phenomenon that centre around a concern with how to locate it in relation to the social, economic and political structures alongside which it manifests. Authors tend to produce accounts that either reduce shamanism to an expression of more fundamental material realities, or explore the cosmo-ontological parameters of the practice itself, in turn masking its articulation with other processes in the social field. This point will be illustrated with reference to a novel ethnography of the making of the shamanic gown in Ulaanbaatar. Yet more than this, it will be suggested that a more sustained reflection upon the nature of the shamanic gown, and consideration of new information regarding the processes that contribute to its creation, might provide the means to theorise in a rather different fashion. The shamanic gown and the people and things mobilised in its emergence do not simply collect social and theoretical contexts, but rather flow outward. As such, while being both intimately reactive and irreducible to the adjacent realities, Mongolian shamanism also engages in the making of these very structures. Shamanism and the making of shamanic gowns do not simply emerge from, or deny, contexts; they assemble them.

In this absorbing account of the most ancient of religious practices, Roger N. Walsh, M.D., Ph.D., vividly evokes the training, techniques, experiences, states of mind, and healing practices of the tribal shaman. Walsh delves deeply within the shamanic experience of journeying to other worlds and indicates how such "cosmic travels" serve as vital personal and social functions for the shaman's tribe. He also shows how some shamanic practices are found to foreshadow contemporary medical and psychological techniques. Turning to the recent popularity of shamanic techniques, Walsh carefully distinguishes what works from what doesn't for the contemporary nontribal student, and explains why. Written in an accessible fashion for both the historical and contemporary uses of shamanism, "The Spirit of Shamanism" is for the growing number of people fascinated by this ancient tradition and its wealth of psychological and spiritual insights, and will be of particular interest to mental-health professionals, educators, and their students.
