Hence despite the limited number and competitive nature of PhD scholarships available, around 30% of international graduates surveyed by Shumilova et al. (2012) were working in the academic/research sector and the overall statistics shows that 18% of the PhD degree holders in Finland are foreigners (Statistics Finland, 2014a). Finally, it is important that in terms of immigration policies, there is an opportunity for international students educated in Finland to extend their residence permits for a year after graduation to look for a job.
