It is generally agreed that the argument about Achilles and the tortoise was intended to prove that the concept of movement was contradictory or ambiguous and therefore that it did not belong in the foundations of ontology. It is suggested here that the argument stands unless we are prepared to define a standard time by means of dynamical concepts. It would be a premature assumption, however, to suppose that Zeno himself should have been so prepared.

The Pseudorealization Fallacy and the Chinese Room Argument

John Searle with his now-famous Chinese room argument (1980, 1982, 1984) challenges the basis for a strong version of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Searle’s argument has generated diverse and often strong reactions. Roland Puccetti says, “On the grounds he has staked out, which are considerable, Searle seems to me completely victorious,” (1980, p. 441). Douglas Hofstadter remarks, “This religious ... [Show full abstract] diatribe against AI, masquerading as a serious scientific argument, is one of the wrongest, most infuriating articles I have ever read in my life” (1980, p. 433). My reaction to Searle’s argument is that it is dead right and dead wrong. That is, his argument is right about a wrong conception of AI and wrong about a right conception of AI. But regardless of one’s position on the Chinese room argument, there is no doubt that the argument raises critical issues about the nature and foundation of AI.

Temperament is viewed as a hypothetical construct. The surplus meaning characteristic of such hypothetical constructs is associated in this case with optimum stimulation as a regulatory standard, and with properties of the system of stimulation regulation. It is also connected with the open question of the degree of differentiation of temperament dimensions.

Identity and the foundations of quantum theory

The foundations of quantum theory can be understood as a consequence of a fundamental concept of identity. Intuitive arguments motivate a mathematical formulation of identicality (the indistinguishability and equality of identical particles). Using a theorem of Fivel, this form of identicality leads to standard quantum theory.

A critical legal conception of human dignity

In this article, I argue for adopting a specific conception of human dignity centered around the argument that human dignity flows from an individual's capacity for self-authorship as defined by the set of expressive capabilities they enjoy. I also develop a corollary argument for a specific model of fundamental rights which flows from adopting the conception of dignity presented here.
