Contribution of Tourism to Economic Growth: A Panel Data Approach

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy. Tourism development may promote economic growth both directly and indirectly, first by stimulating the growth of other sectors and second by increasing domestic incomes and effective demand. The commonly accepted argument on the contribution of tourism in economic growth needs to be verified empirically as well. This paper empirically investigates whether the tourism led-growth hypothesis holds for the Mediterranean countries for the period of 1987–2002. A panel data approach is utilized and coefficient estimates are obtained by using fixed effect and random effect models. As a result, the hypothesis that tourism is conducive to economic growth is verified based on the regression results. On the whole, the empirical findings reveal that traditional factors (capital and labor) as well as a tourism related factor contribute to economic growth for the Mediterranean countries under focus.

A Panel Data Approach
ABSTRACT
Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy. Tourism development may promote
economic growth both directly and indirectly, first by stimulating the growth of other sectors and second by
increasing domestic incomes and effective demand. The commonly accepted argument on the contribution
of tourism in economic growth needs to be verified empirically as well. This paper empirically investigates
whether the tourism led-growth hypothesis holds for the Mediterranean countries for the period of 1987-
2002. A panel data approach is utilized and coefficient estimates are obtained by using fixed effect and
random effect models. As a result, the hypothesis that tourism is conducive to economic growth is verified
based on the regression results. On the whole, the empirical findings reveal that traditional factors (capital
and labor) as well as a tourism related factor contribute to economic growth for the Mediterranean coun-
tries under focus.

... Globally, tourism is the fastest-growing industry sector in the world (as found by Wang and Ge [16]; Wen [17]; Wu et al. [18] for China; Saayman et al. [19] for South Africa; Tosun et al. [20] for Turkey; Gokovali and Bahar [2] for Mediterranean countries; Klytchnikova and Dorosh [21] for Latin America; Surugiu and Surugiu [22] in Romania; Dogru and Bulut [23] for 7 European countries). The relatively rapid development of the tourism industry even surpasses all other industries [19], and its development is under the influence of growing interdependence worldwide [24]. ...

Tourism, both domestic and international, is considered to have a significant influence on economic growth in many countries around the world. However, studies that specifically examine the impact of domestic tourism on regional growth have received little attention. This study aims to fill this gap so that the contribution of domestic tourism to regional growth can be identified and enrich the literature on the tourism-led growth hypothesis. This study uses panel data from 33 provinces in Indonesia from 2011 to 2018. The results show that domestic tourism has a significant and positive impact on regional economic growth in Indonesia. The findings prove that domestic tourism is important to develop in promoting regional growth. For the sustainability of domestic tourism, its governance needs to be formulated wisely by involving various stakeholders because domestic tourism will also encourage an increase in international tourism.
... The relationship between tourism and economic development has been extensively explored in the scholarly literature, encompassing research published in scientific journals as well as industry-related analyses conducted by organizations focused on the tourism sector. A key focus of the discussion revolves around understanding the causal relationship between tourism and the economic growth of countries and regions (Benkraiem et al., 2021;Gökovali & Bahar, 2006;Rasool et al., 2021). Moreover, research extends beyond economic growth to examine the impact of tourism activity on the passenger transport sector, globalization, systemic competitiveness of economies, environmental sustainability, income distribution, and quality of life (Jeyacheya & Hampton, 2020;Prideaux et al., 2020;Rodríguez-Díaz & Pulido-Fernández, 2019;Seguí-Amortegui et al., 2019). ...
... In this sense, the literature dealing with the subject is investigated by blocks, related to the drivers that are subsequently examined with the aim of obtaining the conceptual model and the hypotheses to be tested in the empirical part of the study. Gökovali and Bahar (2006) employ a panel data approach to demonstrate that tourism development has the potential to stimulate economic progress directly by fostering growth in other sectors, and indirectly, by bolstering domestic income and aggregate demand. Their findings highlight the contribution of tourism-related factors, in addition to traditional production factors such as capital and labor, to the economic performance of the countries under study. ...
... The influx of tourists produces positive impacts on economic growth via the creation of new jobs, collection of revenues, and inflow of foreign exchange (Hye et al., 2013), and according to Rasool et al. (2021), this sector has become the third-largest exporting sector in the world. Gökovali and Bahar (2006) explained that the tourism sector significantly produces positive impacts on the growth of the economy in two possible ways; first, it can produce a positive effect on other sectors, and second, it can increase domestic income. The tourism sector increases investment in infrastructure development and increases market competition and household income levels (Brida et al., 2020). ...

Gilgit Baltistan has become a famous tourist spot for both national and international tourists. The influx of tourists can produce positive impacts such as stimulating economic growth, inflowing investment, and cultural exchange. However, it can also degrade our ecosystem and hybrid indigenous socio-cultural system. Local communities can observe these impacts directly. This descriptive study aims to explore how the local community in the Baltistan division perceives the impacts of the tourism sector on their economy, environment, and socio-cultural setting. Primary data was collected with the help of a survey and disproportionate stratified sampling. After a pilot study, 102 sample sizes were used to analyze the data. The result showed a positive perception of the local community on economic development and a negative on the environment and socio-cultural setting of the region. Several policy measures such as effective pricing mechanisms, awareness campaigns, and public-private partnerships for socioeconomic development, are suggested for sustainable tourism development in the region.
... Several studies use trade and endogenous growth models to examine the link between tourism and economic growth [41][42][43]. Lucas' endogenous growth model (1988) has been employed by some scholars to explain tourism [43][44][45]. The addition of tourism (tourism specialty) as a third input in the production function aids countries' economic growth. ...

The tourism sector has grown to be the largest industry in the world, providing jobs to national and local economies. The tourism sector and foreign direct investment are expanding with time, but more research is needed to determine how these developments affect economic growth. This paper attempt to investigate the impact of tourist receipts, tourism spending, and FDI on Bangladesh’s economic growth utilizing yearly data from 1998 to 2019 by using Johansen Cointegration Approach, Vector Error Correction Model and Granger Causality test. The present study focuses on long-term or short-term effects of tourism receipts, tourism expenditures, and FDI on economic growth in Bangladesh which have been ignored in the prior studies. The Johansen Cointegration Approach is a time series analysis technique that is used to identify the long-run cointegration of the variables. Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is also applied to investigate the long and short-run relationships between variables. The outcome of the Johansen cointegration demonstrates that in the long run, international tourism receipts, tourism expenditures and FDI have a positive impact on economic growth. The findings of the VECM demonstrate the existence of a long-term causal nexus running from tourism receipts, tourism expenditures, and FDI to economic growth. In the short term, tourism expenditures positively related to economic growth while FDI negatively correlated to economic growth in Bangladesh. The Granger Causality test findings show that international tourism receipts Granger cause economic growth and there is a unidirectional causal linkage from tourism receipts (TR) to tourism expenditures. The findings also indicate a bi-directional causal link between tourism expenditures (TE) and economic growth (GDPG). Therefore, the study recommends that the government should evaluate the importance and sensitivity of international tourism and FDI in order to boost economic growth. Graphical Abstract
... Businesses ensure productivity and operational efficiency by utilizing automation and AI in routine tasks. The amalgamation of AI in the tourism sector is optimizing resource use, reducing costs drastically, and increasing productivity, all of which ultimately contribute to GDP, financial benefits, and overall economic growth (Gökovali & Bahar, 2006). However, there is a threat of jobs being replaced by AI. ...

Tourism sector entails both costs and benefits to the economy. The costs are mainly emphasized as opportunity costs. On the other hand tourism revenues may have growth promoting potential benefits: It is a source for deriving foreign exchange which can be used to import capital goods for productive purposes. Thus, a rise in tourism revenues may result in higher production and employment. This paper examines empirically the effects of tourism revenues on economic growth in Turkey for the time period 1962-2002, in a VAR framework. The empirical findings indicate that even though there is growth promoting effects of tourism revenues in the long-run, there is no short-run relationship between tourism and economic growth.

This article outlines a standardized method for assessing direct economic expenditures and impacts associated with tourist events. The method addresses critical and often overlooked methodological issues that distinguish analysis of impacts from tourism in general and analysis of impacts from tourist events. These issues involve a common failure to account for sources, origins, destinations, and causes of expenditures. The corresponding errors in impact estimation will carry through into subsequent input-output or multiplier models and are of particular significance when one considers impacts of tourism events in regions dominated by other tourist sites or attractions, such as heavily visited coastal communities. Implications of the framework for impact estimation are illustrated using examples drawn from recent Rhode Island tourist events, including the 1997 Newport Folk Festival.

This study’s intent is to offer a generalizable model for undertaking economic impact studies that tourism professionals can use to conduct similar studies in their own communities. A conceptual rationale for undertaking economic impact studies is described. The four principles central to the integrity of economic impact analyses are reviewed: exclusion of local residents, exclusion of “time-switchers” and “casuals,” use of income rather than sales output measures of economic impact, and correct interpretation of employment multipliers. The economic impact of a festival on Ocean City, Maryland, is offered as an exemplar.

Tourism has been regarded as a major source of economic growth and a good source of foreign exchange earnings. Tourism has also been considered as an activity that imposes costs on the host country. Such costs include increased pollution, congestion and despoliation of fragile environments and intra-generational inequity aggravation. One aspect that has been ignored is the general equilibrium effects of tourism on the other sectors in the economy. These effects can be quite substantial and should be taken into account when assessing the net benefits of a tourism boom on an economy. This paper presents a model which captures the interdependence between tourism and the rest of the economy, in particular agriculture and manufacturing. We examine the effect of a tourist boom on structural adjustment, commodity and factor prices and more importantly resident welfare. An important result obtained is that the tourist boom may “immiserize” the residents. This occurs because of two effects. The first, a favourable effect due to an increase in the relative price of the non-traded good which is termed the secondary terms of trade effect. The second, a negative effect due to an efficiency loss that occurs in the presence of increasing returns to scale in manufacturing. If this second effect outweighs the first effect, resident immiserization occurs.

Based on the definition of tourism given by the World Tourism Organization, the definition of industry and the concept of productive activities in the System of National Accounts, we show in this paper that tourism has a demand side and a supply side, and that the latter is defined by the former. Also, the supply side of tourism involves many industries in the economy and cannot be defined as a single industry. Therefore, we argue that aggregate measures of tourism should be built from the demand side. We also argue that the measure of the size of tourism and the measure of the contribution of tourism to GDP should be separated. While initial tourism demand is the best measure of the size of tourism, tourism driven GDP is the best measure of the contribution of tourism. The paper presents a method for deriving the two measures. The size measure is free of double counting and comparable to GDP, while the contribution measure provides a conceptually correct and statistically consistent basis for analyzing the supply side of tourism.

Growth in this model is driven by technological change that arises from intentional investment decisions made by profit-maximizing agents. The distinguishing feature of the technology as an input is that it is neither a conventional good nor a public good; it is a nonrival, partially excludable good. Because of the nonconvexity introduced by a nonrival good, price-taking competition cannot be supported. Instead, the equilibrium is one with monopolistic competition. The main conclusions are that the stock of human capital determines the rate of growth, that too little human capital is devoted to research in equilibrium, that integration into world markets will increase growth rates, and that having a large population is not sufficient to generate growth.

This paper investigated the relationship between tourism and growth in a dynamic model of trade. Tourism is incorporated in the model by allowing non-traded goods and services to be consumed by tourists along with domestic residents. It explores the interrelationship between growth in tourism, capital accumulation, per capita consumption and the terms of trade in a dynamic setting. It shows that tourism can substitute for domestic savings by acting as a time-saving device. The analysis is carried out for both the small and the large country case. For the small country case welfare necessarily increases with the growth in tourist consumption of non-traded goods. -Authors

There can be little doubt that, historically, trade has acted as an important engine of growth for countries at different stages of development, not only by contributing to a more efficient allocation of resources within countries, but also by transmitting growth from one part of the world to another. There are static and dynamic gains to be had from trade between countries but there is nothing in the theory of trade that says that the gains are equitably distributed. Also, there is nothing in the theory of Customs Unions that says that the gains from trade will be equitably distributed between members. Indeed, the Customs Union as a whole may be welfare-reducing if trade diversion exceeds trade creation. Recent research suggests that regional trade agreements, reduce growth and investment, but generalised trade liberalisation in the form of unilateral tariff reductions (or the reduction of non-tariff barriers to trade) improves growth performance. Export growth relax the balance of payments constraint on demand by providing the foreign exchange to pay for the import content of higher levels of consumption, investment and government expenditure. Most developing countries are constrained in their growth performance by a shortage of foreign exchange and could therefore grow faster with more exports.
