Nevi with site-related atypia: A review of melanocytic nevi with atypical histologic features based on anatomic site

A subset of melanocytic nevi share features with melanoma and nevi with architectural disorder but are biologically inert and to date do not appear to portend an increased risk for the development of malignancy. These benign nevi with certain atypical histologic features cluster among specific anatomic sites and are thus designated nevi with site-related atypia. We categorize these lesions into four main groups: acral, genital, special site and conjunctival, based on anatomy and relative prevalence of specific atypical histologic features. As the literature and our recognition of these lesions continue to grow, our understanding of their biology has not kept pace.

    ABSTRACT: Virtual slides The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: Melanocytic nevi are the most common tumors of the conjunctiva, accounting for 28% of all neoplastic lesions. These tumors, despite their benign behavior, share some atypical histological features with nevi found in other anatomic sites like the genital and acral regions, globally designated as nevi with site-related atypia. Moreover, in children and adolescents, rapidly growing conjunctival nevi show sometimes worrisome histological patterns in association with a prominent inflammatory infiltrate that may lead to diagnostic problems. In this paper we describe a juvenile compound nevus characterized by marked melanocytic atypia and severe inflammation, which can be considered a rare case of juvenile conjunctival atypical nevus. The final diagnosis relied on morphological and immunohistochemical characterization of the large epithelioid melanocytic cells, and on the results of FISH analysis.

    ABSTRACT: Introspection leads us to believe that universals and meaning are extracted from sensory information before responsive action commences: as if we act first as passive observers whose subsequent reactions follow a process of recognition and decision. We are inclined to base our designs of cognitive systems upon such subjective insights. However, if we take into account the necessity for a prior, ontogenetic growth of a repertoire of perception, it appears more probable that we are engaged in unceasing interaction with our environment and that a response itself, driven by homeostatic mechanisms, contains the meaningful information about the object of the response. The components of the world are thereby described not in terms of their intrinsic spatio-temporal parameters but by their relation to the observer. A rudimentary visual system employing a Probability State Variable (PSV) Controller as a, homeostat is described, and the prototype peripheral hardware suggested. The addition of an associative memory would allow the buildup of a cognitive model of the world, but the reactive searching by the system described --- as if it were an autonomous "perceptuo-postural" mechanism --- must begin the process of discovering the properties of reality.

    ABSTRACT: The closure relation for a correlation function of third order suggested by Schwartz and Ehrenreich in the framework of the electron theory of liquid metals is substituted into the formal relation connecting g(2) with g(3). The equation determining the radial distribution function, obtained in this way, is solved for the fluid of hard spheres. Comparison of this solution with the solution of the Born-Green-Yvon equation and with the exact results for a hard-sphere fluid indicates that the closure relation due to Schwartz and Ehrenreich is inferior to the superposition approximation due to Kirkwood.
