Abstract

The magnetic field intensity of eddy current retarder air-gap is is one of important factors of influence braking effect, this paper constructs electrify magnetic solenoid, mathematical model and the air-gap magnetic field shape distribution in two cases of iron with magnetic yoke and without magnetic yoke is simulated by using Maxwell software according to the working principle of eddy-current retarder, the results indicate that the yokes play a magnetizing part and make magnetic distribute function again, it makes air-gap magnetic field distribution more uniform, but the magnetic field intensity of air-gap is more small

Inductive transducers are widely applied to active magnetic bearings (AMBs). However, when the rotor rotates at a high speed, the rotor defects will affect the measuring signal (the magnetic field generated by transducer coils) and then reduce the transducer measuring accuracy. The rotor in AMBs is assembled with laminations, which will result in rotor non-mechanical errors. In this paper, rotor non-mechanical errors, including the anisotropic internal permeability and anisotropic surface conductivity, and their influence on double-pole variable-gap inductive transducers are explored in depth. The anisotropic internal permeability will affect the transducer measuring accuracy and bring about 1.3 ± 0.1 % measurement error. The anisotropic surface conductivity leads to different eddy currents around the rotor, influences the equivalent reluctance of the magnetic circuit, and then affectsthe transducer measuring accuracy. The experiments prove that rotor non-mechanical errors have a significant influence on transducer measurement accuracy, and the reduction of the transducer excitation frequency can reduce the measurement error and improve the AMB control performance.

In this paper classical electrical machine design schemes are outlined and evaluated in terms of designing eddy current brakes. Next, a generic approach to model single and double stator axial eddy current brakes is proposed. This approach uses coupled electric and magnetic equivalent circuits and takes current displacement, magnetic leakage, fringing and saturation into account. Finally, the suggested generic approach is verified experimentally by actual measurements of a single stator axial eddy current brake.

Deceleration of heavy vehicles on long downhill runs is an important problem. Because of heavy loads, they have a huge amount of kinetic energy to be absorbed. Electromagnetic retarders are widely used on heavy vehicles owing to low operating and maintenance costs. In this study, a braking control system that can be easily applied to existing electromagnetic retarders of vehicles was designed and tested experimentally. The goal of the proposed system is deceleration of the vehicle and stabilisation of the speed at a desired value by using an electromagnetic retarder. To achieve this goal, a closed-loop pulse width modulation (PWM) braking controller was designed. For the experiments, an experimental set-up consisting of an electromagnetic retarder and an engine was built. As a result of experiments, the engine running at a constant speed was decelerated in a controlled manner with a 4% steady-state error according to setpoint values.
