... Prosody produces a rhythmic pattern in poetry, which distinguishes it from prose [14]. Poetry speaks to unconsciousness, communicates with spirits and evokes a powerful emotional response in readers and listeners [15]. In poetry, the emphasis should be on the person, not the poem, whether as a teaching tool or a medical therapy [14]. ...

Historical research shows that many physicians experienced in medical sciences are also talented in art, literature and poetry. Avicenna was a sage who was skilled in poetry in addition to philosophy and medicine. He wrote two different types of poetry: those meant to be enjoyed for their literary qualities of novelty and imagination, and his didactic Urjuzeh. Didactic poems are different from poetry evoked by imagination and feeling. In didactic poetry, the poets want to learn science and philosophy, whether spiritual, ethical or practical to the readers. Rhyme and poetry were often used for scientific writing in Avicenna’s era, and were considered a method for memorizing scientific information and raising students’ interest in difficult scientific concepts. Verse was used to simplify the didactic content, ease memorization and make difficult scientific issues more attractive. In medieval Persia, students of medicine had learned the basics of philosophy before starting medical courses. Poetry could help the students memorize the poem itself in combination with its meaning, in a way that was better and easier than prose. Avicenna’s masterpiece, UrjuzehTebbi, comprises a perfect course in traditional Persian medicine in rhyming text written in Arabic. This great work was translated into Persian at the research centre for traditional medicine and history of medicine. We hope that the Persian translation of Urjuzeh Tebbi will allow students and experts to better appreciate the role of didactic poems in compiling and transmitting the concepts of Iranian medicine. © 2015, Croatian Scientific Society for the History of Health. ... The purpose could include validating a feeling, promoting self-disclosure, and advancing group discussion. Of course, the timing and selection of poetic material must always be considered (Chavis, 2011;Hitchcock & Bowden-Schaible, 2007;Rolfs & Super, 1988). The second component, expressive/creative (E/C), encourages client expression through a number of writing methods (e.g., poetry, letters, journals, and stories). ...

The tripartite practice model for poetry therapy developed by Mazza (2003) is composed of receptive/prescriptive, expressive/creative, and symbolic/ceremonial modes (RES). The structure of this model was investigated by means of an online survey of therapists across disciplines. Analysis of the data collected supported the components of the RES as a suitable framework for describing the range of language arts-based methods used therapeutically, and for classification of therapists in relation to this application.

Anahtar Sözcükler: Psikolojik danışmada şiir kullanımı, varolan şiir, eşleştirme ilkesi, nesnel bağlılaşım, duygu Abstract This paper's first aim was to investigate usability of Aşk Bitti (written by Ahmet Telli) in psychological counselling. The selection of literature for use in a poetry therapy intervention is one of the most difficult issues faced by poetry therapists. A variety of authors have published suggested guidelines for the selection of poetic material; however, there is a paucity of research indicating whether or not poetry therapists are actually consulting such guidelines when selecting the material utilized in a poetry therapy intervention. The intent of this research is to examine the literature that is commonly used in poetry therapy interventions. A list of the poems most frequently used in poetry therapy interventions will be analyzed to determine if the poems meet the guidelines set forth by Hynes and Hynes-Berry. Results indicate that the most frequently used poems vary in the degree to which the Hynes and Hynes-Berry criteria are met.

Collaborative writing is used as a therapeutic technique in poetry therapy groups. This article describes a study on the effect of collaborative writing on cohesion in poetry therapy groups with 33 graduate students. Participants were randomly assigned to poetry therapy control groups without collaborative writing or experimental groups with collaborative writing. After six sessions, posttest scores on the Group Environment Scale (Moos & Hanson, 1974) indicated a significant difference in cohesion for those groups using collaborative writing. Previous research on collaborative writing and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

Attempts to contribute to the development of a poetry therapy (PT) research model by examining research paradigms, specificity and replication, poetry selection, studies in practice research, professional issues, and directions for future research. The following PT techniques are delineated: preexisting poems, collaborative poems, dyadic poems, creative writing, and metaphors and imagery. Selecting the appropriate type of poetic literature for a particular patient is concluded to be one of the most difficult issues confronting PT practitioners. Research investigating PT with individuals and families has been primarily in the form of case studies rather than empirical. Without a substantial research base it is imperative that potential legal and ethical problems be considered before PT advances. A research agenda is proposed. Shakespeare's Lavinia of Titus Andronicus not only embodies the physical wounds given Procne and Philomel of Greek myth; she is Shakespeare's metaphor for the wounds of division—the map of woe—between spoken and written word. As a person, she is disenfranchised from her language community. As a poem, she talks in signs—the compressed and silent gestures beneath human speech. As a person in the poem, she is both poet and agent of healing. This study focuses upon healing Lavinia's wounds: the cut tongue and severed hands. With respect to Lavinia, the archetypal poet and person in the poem, two criteria are derived for selecting poems to serve her poem-making/healing process and the dialogue of self-realization: 1) a poem's capacity to sustain her rapture—her wonder and patience—as this passion sustains the play-spirit with its primary motive of moral constraint against harm and 2) a poem's capacity to shape a house of consciousness for the particular movement within the psychodynamic model for therapeutic action—a house of consciousness with which Lavinia may identify and to which she may accommodate.

Gives a brief account of the treatment of depression in a 42-yr-old professional man, using poetry therapy as the modality. The therapeutic use of the patient's own poems as well as the poems of established poets is explained. At the end of the 10 sessions the patient declared that he no longer experienced the depression and that he had gotten from therapy what he came for. It is concluded that, via the poetry, he had experienced a catharsis. (8 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

The “isoprinciple,” which requires the classification of poems by mood, is the generally accepted criterion for the selection of poems used in therapy. The semantic differential was used to identify the general mood (positive or negative) of 10 poems. Data from 30 subjects representing 3 populations yielded no significant rating differences between groups. The validity of the scales was confirmed. Areas for further investigation are discussed.

p atients unable to verbalize their inner feelings may find expression through poetry therapy. Reading and writing poems in a group setting can provide a springboard for a meaningful, yet non-threatening therapeutic experience. I conducted an eight-month on-going poetry therapy group at Harding Hospital, a private psychiatric facility in Columbus, Ohio. Although this article deals primarily with that experience, I find poetry therapy effective also in working with day treatment patients in a community mental health center. Reading and writing poetry seems to enhance the patient's self-esteem, and encourages the verbalization of inner
