Novel Framework for Mobile Collaborative learning (MCL)to substantiate pedagogical activities

Abstract

Latest study shows that MCL is highly focusing paradigm for research particularity in distance and online education. MCL provides some features and functionalities for all participants to obtain the knowledge. Deployment of new emerging technologies and fast growing trends toward MCL boom attract people to develop learning management system, virtual learning environment and conference system with support of MCL. All these environments lack the most promising supportive framework. In addition some of major challenges in open, large scale, dynamic and heterogeneous environments are not still handled in developing MCL for education and other organizations. These issues includes such as knowledge sharing, faster delivery of contents, request for modified contents, complete access to enterprise data warehouse, delivery of large rich multimedia contents (video-on-demand), asynchronous collaboration, synchronous collaboration, support for multi model, provision for archive updating, user friendly interface, middleware support and virtual support. To overcome these issues; the paper introduces novel framework for MCL consisting of four layers with many promising functional components, which provide access to users for obtaining required contents from enterprise data warehouse (EDW). Novel framework provides information regarding the course materials, easy access to check the grades and use of labs. The applications running on this framework give substantial feedback for collaboration such as exchange for delivery of communication contents including platform for group discussion, short message service (SMS), emails, audio, video and video-on-demand to obtain on-line information to students and other persons who will be part of collaboration.

The number of courses higher education institutions are offering online, blended, or web-enhanced traditional classroom setting, continues to grow exponentially. At the same time, there is an upsurge of mobile technology that has multiple capabilities to support different instructional strategies. Among all adult groups, undergraduate students’ use of mobile technology in everyday life is relatively highest. This paper identifies the impact of infusing mobile technology in undergraduate course instruction for effective and quality learning. The paper also discusses the benefits of using mobile technology in undergraduate students’ learning process.

This work investigates university students' acceptance and readiness for adopting collaborative and context-aware mobile learning services. An acceptance evaluation study was conducted to identify challenges affecting successful implementation and adoption of collaborative mlearning system. The acceptance study has focused on learning contextual factors and learners requirements available at developing countries, where Jordan was considered as the case of this research. Results have confirmed that learning style, mobile device capability and perceived ease of use are having the most positive contribution towards learners' behavior to use collaborative m-learning services. In light of the achieved results, this work provides a new user acceptance model focused toward the adoption of collaborative m-learning services. Finally, this research draws fundamental recommendations allowing for learning context adaptation and successful collaborative m-learning services implementation.

Deployment of new emerging technologies have attracted and motivated a great deal of attention from researchers and scientist in various disciplines to develop and design the learning management systems, virtual learning environments and conference systems with support of MCL for education and other organizations. This technological revolution of connecting large numbers of potential learners through mobile telephony creates new challenges for developing the new architectures for education and business. Some of the MCL paradigms are proposed and implemented in various fields such as university, corporate, health and military but they lack completeness. This paper introduces new server and client side architectural based prototypes with support of various working components, which help the users in obtaining the contents from server to meet the pedagogical requirements. This paper has also proposed and integrated the features of content-server with cache-server to provide the faster delivery of contents for MCL. Finally, The paper proposes and implements some features of a novel “group application” to support asynchronous and synchronous and multimodal features to facilitate the students for MCL. This contribution will encourage and motivate the students to pursue their education again because the students will be able to get the course contents at anytime and anywhere.

Emergence of latest technologies has diverted the focus of people form Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) to mobile-supported collaborative learning. MCL is highly demanded in educational organizations to substantiate the pedagogical activities. Some of the MCL supportive architectures including applications are introduced in several fields to improve the activities of those organizations but they need more concise paradigm to support both types of collaboration: synchronous and asynchronous. This paper introduces the new pre-usability testing method that provides educational support and gives complete picture for developing new pedagogical group application for MCL. The feature of application includes asynchronous and synchronous collaboration support. To validate the features of application, we conduct the post usability testing and heuristic evaluation, which helps in collecting the empirical data to prove the effectiveness and suitability of Group application. Further, application aims to improve learning impact and educate people at anytime and anywhere. General terms: theory, design and development of collaborative learning and usability testing.

Today’s high calorie diets and low physical activity levels contributes towards childhood obesity. Exergaming, a combination of ”exercise” and ”gaming” was conceived as a means of addressing this problem. In this paper a mobile collaborative exergame, which is designed to be enjoyable and physically challenging, is presented. The long term objective is to harness conventional mobile computing technologies to deliver a platform for games that are adaptive to the exercise requirements of individual children.

This paper describes research that investigates the use of a technology designed to support young children's collaborative artifact creation in outdoor environments. Collaboration while creating knowledge artifacts is an important part of children's learning, yet it can be limited while exploring outdoors. The construction of a joint representation often occurs in the classroom after the experience, where further investigation and observation of the environment is not possible. This paper describes a research study where collaborative technology was developed, used by children, and evaluated in an authentic setting — a U.S. National Park.

This work is intended to describe a framework aimed to address the challenges in the development of mobile Collaborative Learning applications. Firstly, the paper offers an overview of some of the main principles of Collaborative Learning that will be the basis of the framework, which is based on three main pillars: collaboration and communication among students; context-awareness (gathering users' data, such as geo-location, movements, academic information, and history) to provide personalize information and services; and interoperability with e-learning as many organizations use them. Evaluation will be conducted with a group of students of a “Professional Expert Course on Mobile Programming” that will use the framework to build their applications.

Informal educational experiences with grandparents and other older adults can be an important component of children"s education, especially in circumstances where high quality educational services and facilities are not readily available. Mobile devices offer unique capabilities to support such interactions. We report on an ongoing participatory design project with an intergenerational design group to create mobile applications for reading and editing books, or even creating all new stories on an Apple iPhone. This paper describes the theoretical and technical foundations for designing and developing an effective mobile collaborative learning (MCL) environment. The paper suggests a prototype based on client-server side with the support of functional components and working procedures, which help users to obtain contents from a server to meet the pedagogical needs. The proposed prototype provides the best MCL environment for students who want to learn at home and working places through mobiles. Finally, to find valuable hidden issues, the paper introduces a new application, “group” in Android operating system, and then conducts usability test in order to facilitate users for accessing and obtaining the contents in collaboration learning procedures.

This article begins with a section that describes cooperative learning and explains eight cooperative learning principles. The second section discusses the interface between cooperative learning and language pedagogy. Next is a section about the why and how of reading aloud by teachers. The heart of the article resides in the last and longest section which describes techniques for integrating cooperative learning with reading aloud by teachers. These techniques include ones that can be used before, while and after the teacher has read aloud to the class.

Although various collaborative systems have successfully improved enterprise work efficiency, mobile collaborative systems, which allow collaboration via wireless networks and mobile devices, still lack robust functionality and content representation support. The paper proposes a novel mobile collaboration framework for multimedia content generation, representation and delivery. A unified file format and a message queue management middleware, designed for, and employed in, a heterogeneous computing environment, are also discussed.

The increasing use of mobile devices and the dissemination of wireless networks have stimulated mobile and ubiquitous computing research. In this context, education is being considered one of the main application areas. This paper proposes the use of mobile and ubiquitous computing to support and improve learning in a new kind of academic structure called Undergraduate Course of Reference (nicknamed GRefe). The GRefe was proposed in Unisinos, a university located in south of Brazil. Currently, there are four GRefes. These courses are organized in Learning Programs and Learning Projects. They use a practical and multidisciplinary approach to stimulate the learning. We proposed the use of mobile and ubiquitous computing technology to articulate and improve the academic activities of a specific GRefe called Computer Engineering. We believe that GRefe organization simplified and stimulated the use of these technologies in a learning environment.

This paper outlines the components of the project WELCOME (Wireless E-Learning and Communication Environment) at the University of Regensburg. We argue that mobile/electronic education should not attempt to replace traditional education with tutors and instructors but support both student and teacher by providing services that facilitate teaching, learning and education-related administrative tasks. The basic approach is integrative, combining a variety of devices (mobile and nonmobile) via a variety of transmitting techniques (wired and wireless).
