SOUND AND COLOUR INTERACTION The first fixation vs. the deliberate choice

The representation of expressivity of sound and colour in functional information is still a fairly unexplored field. Alternative ways of representing functional information are necessary when providing feedback in technical environments as homes, cars, nuclear power plants, and intensive care. To determine which colours and sound signals are most suitable for an expression in a functional message, an experiment was run. Immediate first fixations of subjects and deliberate choices on 11 colours were measured and compared. Subjects rated how well each of 8 sound signals and 11 colours corresponds to each of 3 functional messages. Results of immediate first fixation and deliberate choice show that red nuances and the sound signal high pitch level, high loudness and long duration, are related to danger. Green is also in relation to danger a result which could depend on what situation participants thought of as the choice was made. While ongoing process is related to low pitch level and short duration signal. The measure of immediate first fixation is more often significant to sound than the deliberate choice is, therefore could this measure be more appropriate for the measure between sound and colour. Black and white are the colours with most first fixations and more appearing for ongoing process. On explanation of these results can be that they are more neutral colours and ongoing process can be understood as a neutral process. The results between danger and red nuances could have been influenced by a cultural convention.

Impact of spectral composition on larval haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus L., growth and survival

In a small-scale culture experiment, larval haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus L., were raised under various combinations of light quality [blue (470 nm), green (530 nm) or full-spectrum white light] and light intensity [low (0.3–0.4 µmol s−1 m−2) or high (1.7–1.9 µmol s−1 m−2)], and in total darkness (both fed, and starved). Larval growth (0.9% day−1 in standard length; 2.4% day−1 in body area) ... [Show full abstract] was not significantly different between any combination of coloured light. At the time of total mortality in the starved treatment, survival was significantly reduced under low intensity, full-spectrum white light (13%) vs. all other coloured light treatments (68%). Larvae raised under both continuous dark treatments (fed and starved) exhibited morphological changes associated with irreversible starvation (point-of-no-return). Lack of a pronounced effect of light quality on larval haddock growth probably results from a combination of plasticity in early larval vision, and enhanced encounter rates between larvae and prey at the relatively high prey densities used in aquaculture.

We have isolated three distinct cDNA clones from Lemna gibba representing mRNAs that increase in abundance during dark treatment. All three mRNAs showed reduced expression in response to red or white light. These mRNAs range from approximately 680 to 800 nucleotides in length and thus encode relatively small proteins (maximum relative molecular weight 17,000 to 19,000). The genes corresponding to ... [Show full abstract] these dark-abundant mRNAs are designated NPR (negatively phytochrome regulated) 1, 2, and 3. Differences in the rapidity of mRNA accumulation during dark treatment were observed for each of the genes in both mature green plants and in etiolated plants. Differences in accumulation pattern were also observed in etiolated plants, depending on whether the plants received a far-red light treatment prior to darkness. Transcription of all three genes, assayed in nuclei isolated from either green or etiolated plants, increased during dark treatment. In etiolated plants, a single 2 minute red light treatment caused a detectable decrease in the transcription of the genes after the dark treatment, and 10 minutes of far-red light given immediately after the red light resulted in a reversal of the effect of red light. Additionally, treatment of the plants with far-red light prior to darkness resulted in greater rates of transcription of the NPR genes. Therefore, we conclude that phytochrome action results in decreased transcription of these NPR genes. Each of the NPR mRNAs are encoded by one to two genes.

These results suggest that chloroplast dysfunction in white mesophyll cells did not drastically affect photosynthetic activity of green mesophyll cells, or respiratory rates of both green and white mesophyll cells. CO2 compensation point was elevated when the proportion of green area became extremely low, indicating that the proportion of non-photosynthetic cells within a photosynthetic organ could affect its CO2 compensation point.

Colour is an important feature of many forensic samples. Possibilities of colour measurements and comparison of samples that are non homogeneous when viewed under a microscope were considered. Measurements were taken in relation to two references, i.e. white paper and barium sulphate. The Vis spectra by themselves do not provide information about colour, but they may provide information about the presence of colourless components. The colour of samples was compared by calculating the δE parameter according to the CIE-Lab theory. In the majority of analysed samples, the colour was recognized as homogeneous (the variability within sample was insignificant), irrespective of the reference used. Colour differences between samples measured in relation to different references and between samples of different shades were found to be significant. This information may be helpful in forensic examinations, as colour paper might be the substrate of questioned documents.

To determine the appropriate experimental conditions for measuring the color zone map covering the visual field, the color appearances of red, yellow, green, and blue lights of a CRT display presented across the horizontal meridian of the visual field were measured. The test stimulus settings were equal luminance and equal brightness at the fovea, with dark, gray, or white surround conditions. ... [Show full abstract] The perceived strength of the red, yellow, green, and blue hue components in the test stimuli decreased from the fovea to the periphery under all conditions. The luminance level of the test stimuli and the surround conditions did not significantly affect the results. All four of the unique-hue component curves as a function of the eccentricity normalized at the fovea were within the range of the data obtained in previous studies in which monochromatic lights were used as the test stimuli. These curves may thus not depend on whether the test stimulus is monochromatic or complex light. The recommended experimental conditions for measuring the color zone map are equal-luminance test stimuli (no need for brightness-matching testing) with a gray surround (more applicable to actual visual environments than a dark or white surround).

Experiments have been carried out for several arbitrary lines in a circular disk under diametral compression and the results are found to be good.
