SOME PROPERTIES OF QUADRATIC SIMILARITY JUDGEMENTS BETWEEN FOUR‐DIMENSIONAL STIMULI

A model for quadratic similarity judgements developed previously (Gregson, 1969, 1970) is extended to deal with a form of bias, and to assess the information taken up by the parameters in the model. It is shown that judgements collapse, in terms of the model, into near randomness under restricted information conditions, but that this collapse is generally explicable in form, although it exhibits marked inter‐individual differences. Sex bias, diagnosis, and DSM-III

The results showed that females were rated significantly more histrionic than males exhibiting identical histrionic symptoms. Correcting a minor miscalculation in one of Latané and Nida's analyses indicated that, under restricted communication among bystanders, victims were significantly more likely to receive help from a group than from an individual. New correlational analyses indicated that as group size increased, the likelihood of receiving help increased under restricted communication and did not change under full communication. I address several implications of these new findings, including those regarding the case of Kitty Genovese and the role of communication type in bystander intervention. I also briefly report on recent studies on online requests for help.

[Show full abstract] may illuminate heretofore unexplored aspects of learners’ willingness or reluctance to grapple with information is the need for closure (Kruglanski, Psychol Inq 1(3):181–197, 1990; Kruglanski and Webster, Psychol Rev 103:263–283, 1996; Webster and Kruglanski, J Pers Soc Psychol 76(6):1049–1062, 1994). The purpose of this article is to provide educational psychologists with a theoretical overview of need for cognitive closure, highlighting its applicability to instructional settings. We will also discuss what closure needs may look like within the classroom and the conditions under which they may be exhibited. We argue for the relevance of the need for closure construct for improving educators’ understanding of teaching and learning processes.
