This paper provides an analysis of and index to new Acari described in Systematic & Applied Acarology during the last twelve years (1996–2007). A total of 336 papers was published during this period, with taxonomic papers accounting for 60%. Among the 208 taxonomic papers, 143 papers (68.8%) contain descriptions of new taxa or new names. These papers contain a total of 264 new taxa (new names), with three families, 31 genera/ subgenera and 230 species. Among these, only two are new species names proposed for previously occupied homonyms; all others are newly established taxa. Most new taxa/names (85.2%) are of the Acariformes. Among the 225 new taxa (new names) of the Acariformes, most (93.3%) are of the Trombidiformes. New taxa/names are distributed in 40 families of Trombidiformes, 10 families of Sarcoptiformes and 7 families of Mesostigmata. Most families have only one to three new taxa/names: 19 families with 1 new taxon, 13 families with 2 new taxa, and 6 families with 3 new taxa. Abstract

This paper provides an analysis of and index to new Acari described in Systematic & Applied Acarology during

the last twelve years (1996–2007). A total of 336 papers was published during this period, with taxonomic

papers accounting for 60%. Among the 208 taxonomic papers, 143 papers (68.8%) contain descriptions of new

taxa or new names. These papers contain a total of 264 new taxa (new names), with three families, 31 genera/

subgenera and 230 species. Among these, only two are new species names proposed for previously occupied

homonyms; all others are newly established taxa. Most new taxa/names (85.2%) are of the Acariformes. Among

the 225 new taxa (new names) of the Acariformes, most (93.3%) are of the Trombidiformes. New taxa/names

are distributed in 40 families of Trombidiformes, 10 families of Sarcoptiformes and 7 families of Mesostigmata.

authors are from 22 countries in Asia, Africa, Australasia, Europe, South America and North America, with a

strong representation by authors in the Asia-Pacific region.

Introduction

Systematic & Applied Acarology (SAA) was founded in 1996 and has been continually published

since. It was issued annually during the first ten years, during which an average of 53 authors from

12 countries published on average 27 papers each with an average of 21 new taxa in 202 pages each

year (Zhang 2005). SAA was a primarily a journal of systematic acarology, because 64% of the

papers published during the first decade were on systematics, morphology and evolution (Zhang

2005).

In the last two years, the frequency of publication of SAA was increased to semiannual in 2006

and quarterly in 2007, allowing more papers (31.5 papers in 251 pages per year during 2006–2007

versus 27.3 papers in 202 pages per year during 1996–2005) to be published more rapidly (Zhang

2008). In addition to the increase of number of authors (69 per year during 2006–2007 versus 53 per

year during 1996–2005), there was also an increase in the diversity of authors from different

countries during the last two years (18 countries per year during 2006–2007 versus 12 countries per

year during 1996–2005) and the increased degree of international collaboration in papers published

in the last two years (Zhang 2008). As a result, SAA has become increasingly international.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of and index to new Acari described/named

in this international journal of systematic acarology during the last twelve years. Article 8

(Recommendation 8A) of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (The International

Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999) urges authors and editors to ensure that new

scientific names and other nomenclatural acts are made widely known. This paper is written with this

purpose in mind and will be provided free online for open access to ensure wide dissemination.

Analyses of papers, new taxa and authors

Number of papers and new taxa by year of publication

A total of 336 papers was published in SAA during 1996–2007, with taxonomic papers

accounting for 60% (Table 1). Over the years, the journal has become increasingly more ‘taxonomic’

in that the proportion of taxonomic papers was on avearge less than 50% (also each year less than

60%) during the first four years but exceeded 60% each year in the last eight years (Fig. 1).

Among the 208 taxonomic papers, 143 papers (68.8%) contain descriptions of new taxa or new

names (Table 1). The temporal pattern shows two obvious peaks in the proportion of taxonomic

papers with new taxa or new names—volume 6 in 2001 and volume 11 in 2006 (Fig. 2).

During 1996–2007, a total of 264 new taxa (new names) was described in 143 papers, with three

families, 31 genera/subgenera and 230 species. Among these, only two are new species names

proposed for previously occupied homonyms; all others are newly established taxa.

The number of new taxa each year varied greatly with two peaks—volume 6 in 2001 and volume

11 in 2006 (Fig. Table 1) . On average, there were 22 new taxa described each year.

Taxonomic distribution of new taxa

The distribution of new taxa/names is extremely uneven among different higher taxa (Table 2).

Among the 264 new taxa (new names), most (85.2%) are of the Acariformes. Among the 225 new

taxa (new names) of the Acariformes, most (93.3%) are of the Trombidiformes. New taxa/names are

distributed in 40 families of Trombidiformes, 10 families of Sarcoptiformes and 7 families of

Mesostigmata (Table 2). The top ten families (with number of new taxa/names in parenthesis) are

Erythraeidae (49), Phytoseiidae (25), Walchiidae (22), Tarsonemidae (16), Eriophyidae (11),

Stigmaeidae (11), Cunaxidae (8), Trombidiidae (8), Diptilomiopidae (7), and Trombiculidae (6).

The Camerobiidae shares with Trombiculidae in having six new taxa, but the former has two new

genera and four new species while the latter has six new species. These families combined account

for 64% of the all new taxa/names described. Most families have only one to three new taxa/names:

19 families with 1, 13 families with 2, 6 families with 3.

Annotated catalogue of Stigmaeidae (Acari: Prostigmata), with a pictorial key to genera

Stigmaeidae is one of the most studied mite families in Acarology, with the number of described species increasing by 44 percent in the last twenty years. To summarize the taxonomic and biological research in this family we compiled a catalogue with annotated information to nomenclature, synonymies, type localities, type depositories, host/habitat, feeding habits (if applicable) and distribution of 577 species in 34 genera (up to 31 July 2016). We also provide an overview of the main revisions and reviews. To facilitate future taxonomic research we present a pictorial key to genera. The following nomenclature changes are made: Raphignathus siculus var. lapponica Trägårdh, 1910 and Wooderia philippica Rimando & Corpuz-Raros, 1997 transferred to Eustigmaeus Berlese, Mullederia makilingae Rimando & Corpuz-Raros, 1996 transferred to Indostigmaeus Gupta & Ghosh. Evaluation of recombinant CXCL8(3–73)K11R/G31P in muscle fibrosis and Trichinella larvae encapsulation in a murine model of trichinellosis

Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) larvae in raw or inadequately cooked meat can cause chronic infections in a wide range of hosts including humans. During the development inside the skeletal muscles, T. spiralis larvae infect muscle cells accompanying with the infiltration of host inflammatory cells, eventually create a new type of cell known as nurse cell developing a surrounding vascular network to support the larvae development. Controlling of host inflammatory responses and angiogenesis influences both the nurse cell differentiation and the parasite larvae development. CXCL8 is a chemokine that acts on G-protein coupled receptors, of which activation contributes to fibrosis and angiogenesis. CXCL8(3-73)K11R/G31P (G31P) has been reported as a CXCL8 analogue. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of G31P in inflammatory responses and the development of T. spiralis larvae in muscle tissues of mice infected with T. spiralis. The level of inflammatory factors and the morphology of T. spiralis larvae in infected tissues were investigated through ELISA and electron-microscopy analysis. G31P up-regulated IFN-γ and down-regulated CXCL8 level, and impaired the encapsulation of T. spiralis larvae in vivo. The results showed that G31P influenced the development of T. spiralis larvae in muscle tissues.

A new mite species, Eustigmaeus seemani sp. nov., from western Iran (Rijab region, Kermanshah province) is described and illustrated based on females and males from soil and litter under apple trees. The male of Eustigmaeus segnis (Koch) from soil and litter under walnut trees (Rijab region, Kermanshah province) is described and Eustigmaeus rhodomela (Koch) (from mosses in Uormia vicinity, Western Azerbaijan province) is re-described and reported for the first time from Iran. A key to all known species of Eustigmaeus in Iran is presented.

Two new species of the genera Neotarsonemoides and Xenotarsonemus are described. Neotarsonemoides triquetrus sp. nov. was found on pine needles on the ground. Xenotarsonemus ligula sp. nov. was collected in samples of mosses on a tea tree. Types were deposited in the Collection of Plant Protection Research Institute, Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China.

Single nymphs of Ixodes sigelos Keirans, Clifford & Corwin, 1976 were collected in Region XI, Chile, on Akodon olivaceus (Waterhouse 1837) in Puerto Aysen (45o23´S 72o41´W), Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Bennett 1832) in the vicinity of Lago General Carrera (46o26´S 72o00´W) and Akodon xanthorhinus (Waterhouse 1837) in Puerto Ibanez (46o17´S 71o56´W), as well as in Tucuman Province, Argentina, on Akodon spegazzinii Thomas, 1897, 3 km SW of Hualinchay (26o20´S 65o39´W). Akodon xanthorhinus and A. spegazzinii are new hosts for I. sigelos, and these are the first records of this tick from Argentina and southern Chile. The nymph of I. sigelos and nymphs of three other Neotropical Ixodes (I. neuquenensis Ringuelet, 1947, I. nuttalli Lahille, 1913, I. stilesi Neumann, 1911) bear anterior and posterior processes on palpal article I. A new species of sand-mite, Schoengastiella ( Dureniella) irani, sp. n., collected from Rattus sp. in Iran, is described. This is the first Palearctic species known to belong to subgenus Dureniella and, as such, is apparently conspecific with material collected in the Kyrgyz Republic and incorrectly identified by Kudryashova as Schoengastiella ( Dureniella) wansoni Wolfs et Vercammen-Grandjean, an Afrotropical species.
