Scaffolding Supports in Project-based Learning through Knowledge Community (KC): collaborative learning strategies and pedagogical facilitation

Authors:

Abstract

There has been an increasing attention to integration of project-based learning into Asian school curricula. And the notion of learning community is a heated topic for learning to learn in knowledge-based societies. Yet the cognitive research on using web-based learning community for project-based learning is still under-developed in Asian context s Through a scrutiny of basic functional tools of a web-based collaborative learning platform called Knowledge Community (KC), the paper endeavors to highlight the significance of four senses of scaffolding supports (in Vygotskian terminology) for knowledge co-construction in groups of primary and secondary (Grade 1-12) students in Hong Kong and Singapore. Based on various databases of KC, some directions in collaborative learning strategies and pedagogical facilitation are suggested.

Studying complex systems is increasingly important in many domains. Several features shared by complex systems hinder deep understanding. For example, understanding complex systems involves thinking about multiple interdependent levels, non-linear causality and/or emergence. Conceptual representations offer opportunities to become integrating frameworks across different domains. This study investigates how alternative conceptual representations embodied in hypermedia can help middle school students better understand a complex system, the human respiratory system. We designed two versions of instructional hypermedia based on structure-behavior-function theory. SBF is a conceptual representation that is part of the disciplinary toolbox of biologists and thus is an appropriate representation for learning in this domain. One hypermedia was function-centered while the other was structure-centered. We contrasted the instructional effects of these two alternative conceptual representations. Students using the function-centered hypermedia developed deeper understanding than those using the structure-centered version on one of the two measures. Implications and limitations are discussed.

This research investigated 68 secondary school students’ perceptions of their computer-mediated project-based learning environment and their attitudes towards Project Work (PW) using two instruments—Project Work Classroom Learning Environment Questionnaire (PWCLEQ) and Project Work Related Attitudes Instrument (PWRAI). In this project-based learning environment, students experienced a face-to-face classroom setting and e-learning by using a synchronous computer-mediated communication (CMC) tool called ‘iCollaborate’ for online communication and project collaboration with peers from other countries. The PWCLEQ and PWRAI instruments were used to evaluate the computer-mediated project-based learning environment using students’ perceptions of the learning environment and to further investigate how their perceptions might affect their attitudes towards PW lessons. Students perceived the computer-mediated project-based learning environment favourably but they preferred to experience more Material Environment and more Open-Endedness and Social Presence. Simple correlation analysis revealed that all environment dimensions were significantly and positively related to the students’ attitudes towards PW, while multiple regression analysis indicated that two scales, Instructor Support and Social Presence, were the strongest predictors of attitudes towards PW lessons. This paper explores the broad issues of why the meaningful use of ICT to engage in deep learning has not been widespread in K-12 schools. We argue a critical reason is the lack of sustainability in the implementation of ICT-enabled pedagogies in schools, arising from a failure to understand the conditions for systemic innovations. We describe the key issues related to sustainability from literature, and contextualized some of these issues using 2 examples of innovations that have been implemented in the Singapore schools. Implications are then drawn with respect to how research work should be conducted with a view of sustainability, how to build up capacity of researchers and teacher implementers to push innovations, and new methods of analysis for studying sustainability.

The wave of a knowledge economy drives today's education to equip students with knowledge building abilities. While collaborative learning has been proven to be an effective constructivist pedagogy, it is difficult to elicit, coordinate, and capture the corresponding knowledge construction process. The situation becomes more challenging when learning is conducted in a distributed environment in which the participants are scattered in different geographical locations. In this paper, we depict the theories, architecture, applications, and analysis of a Web-based computer-supported collaborative learning and knowledge-building system called Knowledge Community (KC), which currently serves a series of 3I (interdisciplinary, interschool, and international) Project Learning activities with more than 10 000 students and teachers participating globally. We also describe the corresponding 3I Project Learning model, a novel technology-enabled pedagogy in which learners perform collaborative, comparative study projects with peers from other countries. Technologically, KC is the use of Web technologies to provide a collaborative learning environment. Pedagogically, KC with its embedded learning theories has created a new learning culture that meets the demands of knowledge economy.

The aim of this paper is to describe the dominant schools of thought in relation to learning theories and how computermediated technologies can be integrated in relation to these theories. A framework is proposed for integrating the learning theories, situating the use of these learning theories in different instructional contexts. Hence, instead of regarding the learning theories as discordant, it is rather proposed that human cognition is complex and that there is a role for behaviourist, cognitivist, constructivist and social constructivist models of learning based on the objectives and context of learning. Moreover, computer-mediated instructional technologies can also be appropriated accordingly based on the different contexts of learning and instruction.

In this paper, we explore the learning that occurred in two types of collaborative learning environments in a seventh grade life sciences classroom: an intra-group environment and an intergroup environment. Students used both types of collaboration tools, each tuned to the needs of the task they were doing within or across groups. We found that the learning outcomes in the two collaborative settings were different. During the intra- group collaboration, students focused more on the structure and behavior of the designs. The inter-group environment on the other hand, led them to discuss the function/s of their models, ask for and provide justifications for the functions. We discuss the results and suggest integration of the inter and intra group tools.

The most important contribution of management in the 20th century was to increase manual worker productivity fifty-fold. The most important contribution of management in the 21st century will be to increase knowledge worker productivity—hopefully by the same percentage. So far it is abysmally low and in many areas (hospital nurses, for instance, or design engineers in the automobile industry) actually lower than it was 70 years ago. So far, almost no one has addressed it. Yet we know how to increase—and rapidly—the productivity of knowledge workers. The methods, however, are totally different from those that increased the productivity of manual workers.

The learning-communities approach fits with the growing emphasis on lifelong learning, which can naturally be extended beyond the classroom walls. There is every reason for a learning community to include parents and members of the wider society. With the addition of computer net works it becomes possible to include scientists and other professionals, as well as students around the globe, in communities that are trying to understand and deal with social and political ideas and issues.

The central purpose of computer-supported intentional learning environments (CSILE) is to make knowledge building an integral part of schooling. In order for this to occur, the character of classroom discourse needs to undergo radical change. CSILE has been designed as a computer-supported environment in which collaborative discourse is the primary medium for knowledge advancement. Students identify and pursue issues of understanding and engage in the kinds of dialogue used by workers in the sciences and in other dynamic, knowledgeable advancing organizations. The focus is on collective responsibility and continual advancement of ideas in a student-generated database.
