Abstract and Figures

COMFLOW is a general 3D free-surface flow solver. The main objective in this paper is to extend the solver with a permeable flow model to simulate wave interaction with rubble-mound breakwaters. The extended Navier-Stokes equations for permeable flow are presented and we show the discretization of these equations as they are implemented in COMFLOW. An analytical solution for the reflection coefficient of a permeable structure is derived and the numerical model is compared to the solution. In addition, a validation study has been performed, in which we compare the numerical results with an experiment. In the experiment, pressures and surface elevations are measured inside a permeable structure. The measurements are represented well by the simulation results. At the end, a 3D application of the model is shown.

3D SIMULATION OF WAVE INTERACTION WITH PERMEABLE STRUCTURES

INTRODUCTION
Designs of coastal structures are often evaluated by means of experiments in a model basin.
During an experiment we assess the damage to a model structure due to a representative storm, and
determine whether the damage is above or below a certain threshold. Besides damage levels,
parameters such as wave run-up, overtopping and transmission, resulting from the interaction
between waves and the coastal structure, can be measured, depending on the scope of the
experiment.
Numerical simulations can be performed in support of these experiments. One advantage of
numerical simulation is that output of the solution variables may straightforwardly be obtained from
the entire domain, whereas it is common in experiments that only local information with pin-point
measurements is obtained. Data of a global nature may prove advantageous in the explanation of
phenomena observed in the experiments.
There are not many models for the detailed simulation of waves near structures. Phenomena
such as wave run-up or wave impacts on the slopes of a structure, or the overtopping of its crest,
require a specific type of modeling. COMFLOW (e.g. Kleefsman et al., 2005) is a 3D Volume of
Fluid (VOF) model designed specifically for this type of event, see Fig.1. For applications with
permeable coastal structures, it has its origins in the 2D VOF model presented by Van Gent et al.
(1994). A similar approach to the latter with respect to coastal structures was proposed by Liu et al.
(1999). COMFLOW is in active development and well validated in recent years, for, predominantly,
offshore applications. A coastal application is presented in Wenneker et al. (2010).

COMFLOW is based on the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in both water and air. It employs a
symmetry-preserving discretization of these equations on a Cartesian grid (Verstappen and
Veldman, 2003) and the free surface is advected by means of the Volume of Fluid method, which
has been extended with a local height function to prevent droplets from disconnecting from the free
surface. A cut-cell method is used to include arbitrarily shaped geometries in the computational
domain (Kleefsman et al., 2005).
The emphasis in the design of the numerical model has been on momentum-driven flows in the
presence of a free surface, meaning that pressures as a result of wave impacts on a structure are
resolved more accurately than vortices shedding from, for instance, a cylinder in a uniform flow.

Coastal structures are often composed of rubble-mound material. Damage to the structure, run-
up and wave overtopping are strongly influenced by the permeability of the structure. For
phenomena such as wave overtopping and wave transmission it is even required that the wave
dynamics are computed throughout the structure.
For the detailed simulation of wave phenomena near coastal structures, therefore, it is
important to include the effects of flow through permeable media.
GOVERNING EQUATIONS
For flow through permeable media, the Navier-Stokes equations need to account for the porosity
of the medium. With COMFLOW, we will not compute the flow through the pores themselves, i.e. the
grid resolution in our simulations will be much coarser than the pores of the rock material that we
wish to model. Therefore, a volume-averaged method is adopted, in which we assume that the
properties of the permeable structure, such as the porosity, are homogenous throughout (part of) the
structure.
Besides porosity, we also need to account for the viscous interaction of the flow with the rocks in
the permeable structure. We cannot represent all the (turbulent) boundary layers around the individual
stones and will therefore model the viscous interaction with an additional volume averaged friction
force in the Navier-Stokes equations that depends on the flow velocity. A similar approach is adopted
in Darcy’s Law, which was adapted by Forchheimer to account for turbulent flows. The friction force

DISCRETIZATION
Eqs. (2) and (3) require discretization for the implementation in COMFLOW. In this section, the
discretization of the individual terms in the Navier-Stokes equation will be discussed. These terms
will be combined later in the paragraph concerning the time discretization. In COMFLOW, a finite
volume discretization has been adopted. To that end, we will now present the weak form of the

Viscous term
The discretization of the viscous term in this paper is relatively inaccurate compared to the other
terms discussed here because it accounts for the porosity in a simplified manner. There are two
reasons why we may assume that this discretization does not influence the results to a great extent.
With COMFLOW we are primarily interested in wave loads as a result of steep waves; the type of flow
in these waves is dominated by convection. In addition, inside permeable structures, the friction force
term is by far dominant over the viscous term. For the discretization of the viscous term, we revert to

VERIFICATION STUDY
To verify the implementation of the permeable flow extension in COMFLOW we compare
numerical results to an analytical solution. The problem concerns wave interaction with a permeable
structure. We will derive an analytical expression for the reflection coefficient and compare it to
COMFLOW results.
Fig. 4 shows a permeable structure in waves. The structure is a rectangular block with porosity
that extends in vertical direction from the bottom to an elevation far beyond the free surface. In
horizontal direction, the left boundary of the block is placed at a certain position that we will indicate
by x0. The right boundary is at positive infinity.

Waves propagate from left to right through the open region; this is what we will call the
incoming direction. When waves reach the structure, part of the wave energy will reflect back in
opposite direction. The other part of the wave energy is transmitted through the structure, where it
will dissipate as waves propagate further into the permeable region. The gradual decrease of wave
energy will become apparent in a surface elevation that decreases with distance inside the structure.

Numerical simulation
A simulation for waves near a permeable structure is performed with COMFLOW. The
computational domain extends from x = 0m to x = 180m in horizontal direction; in vertical direction
the bottom of the domain is at z = -1.05m and the top of the domain at z = 0.45m. The grid resolution
in horizontal direction is x = 0.5m; in vertical direction z = 0.1m.
At x0 = 90m, the starting position of the structure is defined. The structure extends from the
bottom of the domain to the top of the domain and from x0 to the end of the domain at x = 180m. The
porosity of the structure = 0.5 and the Darcy-coefficient

The mean free surface is at z = 0. As a result, the depth equals h = 1.05m. The wave period is T =

With the GABC we prevent spurious re-reflection of waves back into the domain. The coefficients
of the boundary condition were set to a0 = 0.99, a1 = 0, b1
= 0, kh = 0.20. These are the optimal
settings for regular waves with this period.
The simulation was run for 300 seconds. There was ample time after a stationary situation was
obtained; during this time, the reflection coefficient was determined by means of a least square
method.
In Fig. 5, a snapshot of the simulation at t = 143s with the surface elevation as a function of the
position in the domain is shown. Here we can clearly see the decreasing surface elevation inside the
permeable structure. The figure also shows that the mean free surface inside the permeable structure
has been elevated with respect to z = 0; this will not be investigated in this document.

Table 1 shows the reflection coefficient that was determined from the simulation with a least-square
analysis and the coefficient that was determined from Eq. (43). They compare reasonably well. The
difference between the two may be explained by the following arguments:
the analytical reflection coefficient was determined with the shallow water equations (kh=0),
whereas in the actual simulation there was some dispersion (kh=0.20)
discretization errors are small, but may be of influence
non-linearities, however small, may play a role
The dominant factor in the explanation of the difference is thought to be dispersion.

VALIDATION
Experimental results are used to validate the implementation of permeable flow in COMFLOW.
We will only consider regular waves. The permeable structure represents a breakwater with a core of
relatively fine material and an armour layer with relatively coarse rock. The outer measures of the
structure are shown in Fig. 6. The base of the structure is about 3 meters wide, the top of the structure
0.35m wide at an elevation of 0.93m. The slopes are 1:1.5. The mean free surface in the experiments
was at an elevation of 0.60m

The positions of the pressure sensors and the wave gauges are shown in Fig. 7. In vertical
direction the pressure sensors are 0.060m apart, in horizontal direction the sensors are between
0.090m and 0.27m apart. The highest pressure sensors are 0.060m below the mean free surface. The
four leftmost wave gauges are 0.12m apart; the distance between the two rightmost wave gauges is
0.75m.

Figs. 6 and 7 are schematized representations of the actual experimental setup. Fig. 8 shows a
composition of photos that were taken during construction. It shows the position of the wave gauges
and the pressure sensors in the right part of the figure. The mount for the pressure sensors is shown
on the left. The centre part of the figure shows the complete structure after construction.

The porosity of the different layers was carefully measured in the experimental setup itself. In
Table 2, the porosities of the layers are listed, as well as the Dn50 of the material in the layers.

In this article, two regular wave tests will be considered. These tests are identified by br1a and
br7a. Table 3 shows the wave heights and periods that were specified during these tests.

Numerical simulations
The numerical simulations are performed with COMFLOW. The computational domain is 2D and
extends from x=-5.0 to x=5.0m in horizontal direction and from z=-0.60 to z=0.4m in vertical
direction. The number of cells in x-direction is 400; hence, the grid size x is 0.025m. The same grid
size was used in vertical direction. With this resolution, there are about 6 cells in the armour layer and
there are at least 100 cells in the wave length.
In the simulations, the structural geometry was specified with the same dimensions and porosities
as in the experiment. Recall that the (turbulent) interaction of the flow with the permeable structure is
modeled with a resistance force that is a function of the velocity:

The value for is recommended by Van Gent (1995). The value for the coefficient is within the
range of values that were obtained in an experiment by Van Gent—they were between 0.3 and 1.1.
The wave kinematics at the inflow end of the computational domain are determined by means of
Rienecker-Fenton theory, see Rienecker and Fenton (1981). At this end of the domain, a Generating

The GABC sends in waves in positive x-direction, while preventing re-reflection of waves
propagating in negative x-direction that originate from the interaction with the structure. At the other
end of the domain, the same boundary condition is specified without incoming waves. The coefficients
for the boundary condition in both simulations are shown in Table 5. They are the optimal settings for
regular waves with the periods in the experiments.

The time step varied during the simulation, but it was never larger than 2.5·10-3s. The total
simulation time was 100 seconds. During this time, output was collected from the sensor locations
specified in Figure 7; the output of the numerical simulations can therefore be compared directly to
the output of the experiments.
The output of the numerical simulations are post-processed. After sufficient time, a stationary
situation is obtained, in which the wave height at an x-coordinate no longer changes. This wave
height is determined as the maximum free surface excursion minus the minimum free surface
excursion at that location. The wave heights for five consecutive wave gauges inside the permeable
structure are plotted in Fig. 9 for experiment br1a and br2a. From these figures we find that the
COMFLOW results for the wave heights agree well with the experiments and that the dimensionless
coefficients and are independent of the wave parameters.

The results for the pressure are also post-processed. When a stationary situation was obtained, the
maximum pressure at a location was determined and the minimum pressure at that location was
subtracted from the maximum to yield the equivalent of the wave height in terms of the pressure.
Results for the top row of seven pressure sensors (see Fig. 7) are shown in Fig. 10. From these results,
the conclusion is that also the pressures computed in COMFLOW compare well to the experiments.

APPLICATIONS
With the verification study and the validation, enough confidence was gained to apply the
permeable flow implementation of COMFLOW in actual projects. One example is Van Gent et al.
(2010). Another example is as follows: Deltares was asked to evaluate a preliminary design of an
outfall for cooling water. The outfall is to be constructed near the coast: it consists of a weir some
distance offshore from a dike. The weir is protected by two breakwaters, perpendicular to the
orientation of the dike. The length of the breakwaters was determined by means of design rules, but it
was uncertain whether these would apply in this situation. Therefore, the structure was modeled with
COMFLOW.
The most extreme event is when the wave direction is in line with the breakwaters. With this
event, the centre line of structure, in between breakwaters, acts as a symmetry plane. To save
computational effort, only one breakwater, on one side of the symmetry plane is modeled. The
composition of the breakwater, in the preliminary design stage, was unknown. It was estimated from
experience that the porosity of the material would very likely be near 0.40. It was also assumed that
the entire breakwater is composed of one material with a rock diameter that is normally used in the
armour layer of a structure. The permeability coefficients of the material are specified as

At the inflow end of the domain, an irregular sea state was prescribed. According to the design
rules, the significant wave height at the position of the weir should be reduced by 20%. Fig. 11 shows
a snapshot of the simulation. It shows the breakwater, the cross-section of the weir and the
impermeable dike section. By means of the simulation, it was determined that for this sea state, the
significant wave height near the weir was reduced with 31% with respect to the input spectrum.

CONCLUSION
COMFLOW has been extended with a permeable flow model. In the Navier-Stokes equations we
account for the porosity and model the (turbulent) interaction of flow and structure with a friction
force that depends on the flow velocity.
An analytical formulation for the reflection coefficient of a permeable structure has been
determined by means of the shallow water equations. The analytical expression was compared to
simulation results obtained with COMFLOW. The COMFLOW results compare reasonably well to the
analytical expression.
COMFLOW simulations have been compared to experiments. The numerical results for pressure
and surface elevation compare well to the measurements. It was found that with constant values for
the material coefficients and , it is possible to represent a structure composed of layers of material
with different nominal diameters in several sea states.
It must be noted that with the type of post-processing used in this study, we have only considered
certain aspects of the physics. The aspects that were retained during post-processing were wave
behavior and energy dissipation inside the permeable structure.
It is recommended to perform more validation. Irregular wave tests have also been performed
with this structure and it is imperative that COMFLOW is validated with these tests. It is also
recommended to perform more validation of COMFLOW with experiments in a 3D setup.

Coastal beaches are permanently threatened by erosion, so that efficient solutions for their protections with less environmental impacts are increasingly required. Among the diverse protective structures against coastal erosion, submerged porous breakwaters (SPBs) have long been recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly types of coastal structures. However, the failures experienced in diverse SPB projects worldwide have well-revealed the current knowledge gaps and the high uncertainty in the assessment of the protective efficacy of SPBs. As such breakwaters are usually highly porous, one of the most crucial knowledge gaps is the effect of structure porosity on their protective efficacy, including the effect of structure submergence. It is worth to mention that the former effect has not yet been considered in any of the current models and predictive formulae for SPBs. Therefore, the overall objective of this PhD study is to improve the current knowledge and modelling of the processes underlying the effect of porosity, combined with the effect of submergence, on both wave transmission and subsequent short-term coastal erosion. To achieve this overall goal and further specific goals, the following methodology with three main work phases is adopted: (i) Using a well-validated CFD model in OpenFOAM, a systematic parameter study is performed for different breakwater submergence depths with a focus on the effect of structure porosity on wave transmission in order to better understand the underlying processes and to develop a wave transmission coefficient (WTC) formula which, for the first time, explicitly accounts for both breakwater porosity and submergence; (ii) Based on the improved understanding and the new WTC formula from work phase i, a novel two steps approach for SPBs is implemented to improve and extend the current DELFT3D-WAVE model: (a) model improvement in order to adequately account for the effect of submergence on wave transmission, even for SPBs with steep slopes, and (b) model extension in order to account for the effect of breakwater porosity on wave transmission. This work phase also includes a systematic validation of the improved/extended model for wave transmission; (iii) With the improvement and extension from work phase ii, the hydro-morphodynamic model DELFT3D is validated and then used to perform an extensive parameter study for different submergence depths by focusing on the effect of structure porosity on short-term coastal erosion in order to better understand the underlying processes and to develop predictive formulae, which explicitly account for the effect of both breakwater porosity and submergence on coastal erosion. For the sake of completeness, the crest width and location depth of SPB are also included in the formulae. From the key results, which have been achieved using these approaches, the following might be worth to mention. For the first time, a WTC formula is developed which explicitly includes the effect of breakwater porosity in addition to the effect of submergence. Using this formula, the DELFT3D-WAVE module is extended and improved. As a result, for the first time, a model is obtained to account for the effect of breakwater porosity on wave transmission, including a substantial improvement of the effect of breakwater submergence, even for steep slopes of SPBs. This model improvement and extension proved to be also highly valuable for the hydro-morphodynamic model DELFT2D as demonstrated by the results of the validation and of the extensive parameter study in work phase iii. From the analysis of the results of this parameter study, for the first time, predictive formulae were derived for the protective efficacy of SPBs, which explicitly account for the effect of porosity on coastal erosion, including the effect of SPB submergence, crest width and location depth. Among the limitations of the approaches and results of this study, which also indicate future research directions and topics, the following might be mentioned: Lack of field data for model validation as well as limited applicability of the new WTC formula for multi-layered SPBs and for SPBs with porosity n= 0- 0.3. Besides overcoming these limitations, future research should also be primarily directed towards 3D modelling to account for longshore shore transport, which is crucial for the effect of SPBs on long-term morphological changes, but also to account explicitly for the effect of the flow in and through SPBs.

Proper modelling of core material is essential in hydraulic model testing of rubble mound breakwaters, since it can significantly affect the wave damping process, and thus the amount of wave transmission and the stability of armour layers. In this study the wave damping process within 4 breakwaters was investigated at varying scales. Based on the results a simple scaling rule for the physical modelling of porous flow (permeability) is proposed.

Submerged breakwaters are emerging as a viable solution to mitigate the adverse effects of increased wave action on coastal structures such as seawalls. This study undertook a comprehensive and rigorous numerical investigation to illustrate the hydrodynamic performance of a nonporous submerged breakwater positioned at varying distances seaward of the seawall under various wave conditions. An open-source computational fluid dynamics-based numerical model, REEF3D, which solves the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations using the finite difference method, was used for the numerical modeling of wave–structure interaction. The numerical model was meticulously validated, ensuring its accuracy and reliability, with experiments conducted in a wave flume using the seawall model. The validated model was then applied to simulate wave interaction between the seawall and submerged breakwater for different pool lengths subjected to regular waves. The study primarily focused on assessing wave elevation in proximity to the seawall, wave reflection characteristics, and hydrodynamic pressures exerted on the seawall when the seawall is defended by a submerged breakwater. The numerical model also analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of free surface elevation and generation of higher harmonics along the numerical wave tank. This thorough approach ensures a deeper understanding of the complex wave–structure interaction processes within the pool zone. This study found that incorporating a submerged breakwater seaward of the seawall may not consistently result in wave attenuation. The results showed that reduction in free surface elevations and pressures follows a nonmonotonic trend with variations in the pool length. Further, the influence of pool length is not significant when interpreting the maximum pressure reduction for varying pool lengths. These findings have significant implications for the design and implementation of coastal structures.

This article presents an overview of breaking waves and liquid sloshing impact acting on rigid walls and in liquid containers. The physics of breaking waves against rigid walls can be understood through the Bagnold/Mitsuyasu piston theory. The flip-through is a major feature associated with the occurrence of violent waves without any actual impact on the wall. The physics of the phase transition during liquid impacts involves two- and multi-phase flows due to the entrapped gas pockets is addressed. The liquid sloshing assessment of liquefied natural gas tanks together with the dimensionless parameters governing the design of small-scale models is discussed. The nonlinear liquid sloshing dynamics under sway and rotational excitations is described for different container geometries. This article will discuss recent developments of numerical algorithms and computer codes capable to describe breaking waves and extreme sloshing impacts. Moreover, recent advances in breaking Faraday waves are also addressed together with an assessment of breaking interfacial gravity waves, in which a multilayer or stratified medium is a stack of different thin layers.

This paper treats the numerical modelling of the behaviour of a sand core covered by rocks and exposed to waves. The associated displacement of the rock is also studied. A design that allows for erosion and deposition of the sand core beneath a rock layer in a coastal structure requires an accurate prediction method to assure that the amount of erosion remains within acceptable limits. This work presents a numerical model that is capable of describing the erosion and deposition patterns inside of an open filter of rock on top of sand. The hydraulic loading is that of incident irregular waves and the open filters are surface piercing. Due to the few experimental data sets on sediment transport inside of rock layers, a sediment transport formulation has been proposed based on a matching between the numerical model and experimental data on the profile deformation inside an open filter. The rock layer on top of a sand core introduces a correction term in the Exner equation (the continuity equation for sediment and change in bed level). The correction term originates from the fact that the sand can only be deposited in the pores of the filter material. The numerical model is validated against additional data sets on the erosion and deposition patterns inside of an open filter. A few cases are defined to study the effect of the sinking of the filter into the erosion hole. The numerical model is also applied to several application cases. The response of the core material (sand) to changes in the wave period and wave height is considered. The effect of different layouts of the filter is studied in order to investigate the effect of different filter profiles on the resulting erosion. Finally, it is studied how much the design of a hydraulically closed filter can be relaxed to obtain a reduction in the design requirements of the filter thickness, while the deformation to the sand core remains acceptably small.

The mathematical modeling of the interaction of water waves with porous coastal structures has continuously been among the most relevant challenges in coastal engineering research and practice. Finding a tool to better predict essential processes, relevant to the functionality and stability of breakwaters and jetties, and how they are affected by permeability, has been hampered by computational limitations that are being overcome. Over the last 60 years, the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coast, and Ocean Engineering has witnessed gradual developments leading from linearized solutions based on wave theories and constant friction coefficients to very sophisticated Eulerian or Lagrangian solvers of the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations, including turbulence within porous media. Today, although not without difficulty, the first steps are being made toward addressing the simulation of a fully three-dimensional interaction of complete sea states with porous structures at prototype scale. In this paper, after posing the mathematical foundations of the problem, the solution techniques available in the literature are reviewed. Linear solutions based on potential theory; depth-integrated solutions, including Boussinesq approximations; and solutions based on the NS equations, in both the Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks, are covered. Then, turbulence modeling on porous media is discussed. Conclusions and a discussion of future research directions close the paper. It is shown that, after so many years, some fundamental questions still remain unanswered, leaving challenges open for future research.

The resilience of a dike is quantified in this research as the residual strength, which is the time between initial damage to a dike and dike breach. Unique experiments have been carried out in the Delta Flume of Deltares with a 8.5 m high dike with a clay liner and sand core. Below the still water level the dike was protected with a concrete block revetment and above the water level there was grass on the clay. The tests were carried out with large waves: Hs = 1.6 m. A formula to quantify the erosion of the clay layer as a function of time is derived by combining present and previous experimental results. A formula to quantify the erosion rate of the sand core is derived by combining the present experimental results with existing dune erosion models. The derived formulas make it possible to calculate the probability of failure of the typical Dutch coastal dike with wave attack. This is an important step in the understanding of dike safety.

This paper presents a numerical model for simulating wave interaction with porous structures. The model calculates the mean flow outside of porous structures based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The corresponding turbulence field is modeled by an improved k-ε model. The flow in porous struc-tures is described by the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The drag forces caused by the presence of a solid skeleton are modeled by the empirical linear and nonlinear frictional forms. The numerical model is first calibrated by simple experiments for flow passing through a porous dam with different porous media. Excellent agreements are obtained for the case using gravels with mean sizes of O(1 cm) to O(10 cm) as the materials for the porous dam. Reasonably good agreements are also obtained when small uniform glass beads with diameters of 3 mm are used. The calibrated numerical model is then employed to investigate the breaking wave overtopping a caisson breakwater, protected by a layer of armor units. Good agreements between numerical results and laboratory data are obtained in terms of both free surface displacement and overtopping rate. Different design scenarios are also studied numerically. The porous armor layer is effective in reducing the overtopping rate as well as in preventing the caisson breakwater from bottom scouring.

A procedure is presented for the dynamic handling of the boundaries of Boussinesq-type wave models that enables to control the reflection properties. The main purpose of the procedure is the reduction of spurious reflections at open boundaries. The procedure also allows, however, the modeling of partial reflection at closed boundaries. The approach chosen takes into account the effect of wave direction, wave period, and wave height, in order that irregular waves, waves at arbitrary angles, and steep waves can all be handled properly. An innovative aspect of the developed method is that it can equally well be used for strongly dispersive waves, since besides the angle of outgoing waves also the celerity is determined dynamically. The results presented demonstrate the feasibility of the approach; reflection coefficients of only about 1% are obtained for regular waves, varying angle, period, as well as steepness.

The 'Volume Of Fluid' method is used to solve the two-dimensional (2D-V) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Permeability measurements were carried out in a U-tube tunnel to study flow through coarse granular material. The results are of importance for studying the flow in permeable structures such as rubble-mound structures and gravel beaches. The contributions of laminar and turbulence friction terms have been determined as well as the importance of inertial resistance. Differences between stationary flow and oscillatory flow conditions have been studied. The influence of oscillatory flow conditions on the porous flow friction coefficients have been implemented in new expressions for porous flow friction coefficients. These can be used both to study scale effects in small-scale physical models and for the implementation in numerical models simulating porous flow.

A method for the numerical solution of steadily progressing periodic waves on irrotational flow over a horizontal bed is presented. No analytical approximations are made. A finite Fourier series, similar to Dean's stream function series, is used to give a set of nonlinear equations which can be solved using Newton's method. Application to laboratory and field situations is emphasized throughout. When compared with known results for wave speed, results from the method agree closely. Results for fluid velocities are compared with experiment and agreement found to be good, unlike results from analytical theories for high waves. The problem of shoaling waves can conveniently be studied using the present method because of its validity for all wavelengths except the solitary wave limit, using the conventional first-order approximation that on a sloping bottom the waves at any depth act as if the bed were horizontal. Wave period, energy flux and mass flux are conserved. Comparisons with experimental results show good agreement.

ComFLOW is a 3D Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) model to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations including free surface, or to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flow problems (two-phase flow: both an incompressible viscous fluid (e.g., water) and a compressible viscous fluid (e.g., air) are present). The problem statement of the present study reads: 'Is ComFLOW capable of accurate prediction of wave impacts on (impermeable) coastal structures such as dikes? And, if so, what are the preferred model settings and associated computing times?'. In this paper, ComFLOW is validated for this purpose by comparison against pressure data as measured in the Delta flume by pressure sensors at dikes. We have selected three different experiments, with typical dike geometries (slope 1:3.5, with and without berm) at which more than 20 pressure sensors were installed. The results can be summarized as follows. The pressure measurements are reproduced well in the simulations. A grid with about 170 grid cells per wave length in the horizontal, and between 4 and 6 grid cells per wave height in the vertical, proves to be sufficiently fine. At such a grid resolution and with about 450 by 35 grid cells in the computational domain, a typical CPU time is 35 minutes for simulations with a model time of 10 wave periods. For the present application, it is preferable to use the one-phase flow model rather than the two-phase flow model, since the former gives better results in the lower located pressure sensors and consumes less CPU time.

The presented study focussed on issues related to the hydraulic stability during the construction of rubble mound breakwaters. During construction the temporary roundheads differ from the roundheads in the final stage. Often a submerged uncompleted part of the breakwater is present in front of the section that reached its final crest elevation. This can occur because often the breakwater is being constructed with maritime-based equipment up to a certain elevation while the upper part of the breakwater is being constructed with land-based equipment. Three-dimensional physical model tests were performed to analyse the influence of the submerged part on the stability of the emerged part. The locations incurring the most damage clearly differ. Furthermore, for some combinations of water level, wave direction and structure geometry more damage was found for structures with a submerged part, although most combinations showed that the amount of displaced stones is generally lower for the structures with a submerged part.

The CFD tool ComFLOW is suitable for simulations of two-phase flows in offshore applications. ComFLOW solves the Navier-Stokes equations in both water and (compressible) air. The water surface is advected through a Volume-of-Fluid method, with a height-function approach for improved accuracy. By employing Absorbing Boundary Conditions (ABC), boundaries can be located relatively close to an object, without influencing outgoing waves or generating numerical reflections that affect the waves inside the flow domain. Traditionally, boundaries are located far from the obstacle to avoid reflections; even when numerical damping zones are used. Hence, with the ABC approach less grid points are required for the same accuracy, which reduces the computing time considerably. Simulations of a semi-submersible model are compared to measurements. The overall agreement is reasonably good, for a wide range of wave conditions. The ABC performs well; numerical reflections are almost absent. Moreover, computing times reduce with a factor four compared to damping zone techniques.

We propose to perform turbulent flow simulations in such manner that the difference operators do have the same symmetry properties as the underlying differential operators, i.e., the convective operator is represented by a skew-symmetric coefficient matrix and the diffusive operator is approximated by a symmetric, positive-definite matrix. Mimicking crucial properties of differential operators forms in itself a motivation for discretizing them in a certain manner. We give it a concrete form by noting that a symmetry-preserving discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations is stable on any grid, and conserves the total mass, momentum and kinetic energy (for the latter the physical dissipation is to be turned off, of coarse). Being stable on any grid, the choice of the grid may be based on the required accuracy solely, and the main question becomes: how accurate is a symmetry-preserving discretization? Its accuracy is tested for a turbulent flow in a channel by comparing the results to those of physical experiments and previous numerical studies. The comparison is carried out for a Reynolds number of 5600, which is based on the channel width and the mean bulk velocity (based on the channel half-width and wall shear velocity the Reynolds number becomes 180). The comparison shows that with a fourth-order, symmetry-preserving method a 64×64×32 grid suffices to perform an accurate numerical simulation.
