Faunistic study of the aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) of Trabzon province (Turkey)

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

In this study, we established the presence of 26 aquatic beetle species belonging to 16 genera and 5 families from the Trabzon province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Specimens were collected between 2005 and 2006. Distributions of species within Turkey are presented as a catalogue of provincial records. Ten species are here recorded for the first time from the Black Sea region of Turkey. Several species known previously from only a few localities in Turkey have been shown to have much wider distributions in the country. In addition, the habitats and the phenologies of these species found in the area were given.

ABSTRACT: In this study, we established the presence of 26 aquatic beetle species
belonging to 16 genera and 5 families from the Trabzon province in the Black Sea region of
Turkey. Specimens were collected between 2005 and 2006. Distributions of species within
Turkey are presented as a catalogue of provincial records. Ten species are here recorded for
the first time from the Black Sea region of Turkey. Several species known previously from
only a few localities in Turkey have been shown to have much wider distributions in the
country. In addition, the habitats and the phenologies of these species found in the area
were given.
KEY WORDS: Coleoptera, Gyrinidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae, Hydrophilidae, Helophoridae,
fauna, Trabzon, Turkey.
Aquatic beetle fauna of Trabzon province is only partly known. Twenty
four species of aquatic beetles have been recorded from the studied
region in the following published works: Balfour–Browne (1963), Gentili
& Chiesa (1975), Guéorguiev (1968; 1981), Angus (1988; 1992), Brancucci
(1988), Gentili (1981; 2000) and Fery & Petrov (2005).
The aim of this study was to make a contribution to Turkish aquatic
beetles fauna.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
This study is based on 495 specimens of aquatic beetles and all the
specimens were collected by the first author from Trabzon province (Map
1) between June – September in 2005 and 2006. Specimens were
collected from a spring water area, with a sieve, ladle and net having a 1
mm mesh size. The beetles were killed with 70% alcohol and in the
laboratory were cleaned of muddy remnant on their surfaces with a small
paintbrush. Aedeagophore was dissected under the stereo-microscope
and on to add 10% KOH solution for about 1–2 hours. Materials have
been deposited in the Gazi University Zoological Museum (=ZMGU),
Ankara, Turkey.
A list of localities is given in Table 1. The ‘List of species” gives the
sampling locations for each species. The dates of sampling and total
number of individuals are also noted. Species new for Trabzon are
marked with an asterisk, species new for Black Sea Region of Turkey with
two asterisks.

In this study, samples belonging to Hydrophilidae and Helophoridae families collected from Diyarbakır were evaluated. Samples were collected between May-September 2016 and April-October 2017 among plants and mosses in shallow parts of various streams, springs, streams, deposits and ponds. In the study area, 12 taxa (species) from 7 genera belonging to Hydrophilidae family and 10 taxa (species) from 1 genus belonging to Helophoridae families were determined. Among these species, Paracymus scutellaris (Rosenhauer, 1856), Anacaena lutescens (Stephens, 1829), Helophorus discrepans (Rey, 1885), Helophorus frater (d'Ochymont, 1926) were recorded for the first time in both the Southeastern Anatolia Region and the research area. In addition, E. (L.) fuscipennis (Thomson, 1884) and Hydrobius fuscipes (Linnaeus) were recorded for the first time only from the study area.

In comparison with other Macaronesian archipelagos, Azorean freshwater macroinvertebrates are characterized by a smaller list of species at the archipelago regional scale. Although knowledge of the freshwater fauna of the Azores has improved in recent years through the implementation of the "Water Framework Directive", we are still far from having a complete inventory and even further from knowing the precise distribution and biology of each species. The lack of knowledge about Azorean freshwater species is coupled with the vulnerability of their habitats to anthropogenic disturbances and the introduction of non-native species. In contributing to overcome Wallacean and Hutchinsonian biodiversity shortfalls, we here provide expanded knowledge on the distribution and biology of the freshwater species of Coleoptera and Heteroptera in the Azores. We compile data from various fieldwork performed between 2006 and 2014, encompassing four islands in the archipelago. We detected new records of two aquatic Heteroptera species (belonging to the families Corixidae and Notonectidae) and six of aquatic Coleoptera (belonging to the families Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrophilidae and Hydraenidae) in these islands, and also a new record (Enochrus fuscipennis) for the Azorean archipelago. We also suggest that the introduced colonization status of three Coleoptera species of the family Hydrophilidae should be reformulated as possibly native, with implications for conservation.
... Most conspicuous amongst these is P. maculatus ''graellsi" (Gemminger & Harold) from the northwest and centre of the Iberian Peninsula (Millán et al., 2014). Quaternary glacial cycles drove major shifts in both the extent and location of the geographical ranges of many organisms. During glacial maxima, large areas of central and northern Europe were inhospitable to temperate species, and these areas are generally assumed to have been recolonized during interglacials by range expansions from Mediterranean refugia. An alternative is that this recolonization was from non-Mediterranean refugia, in central Europe or western Asia, but data on the origin of widespread central and north European species remain fragmentary, especially for insects. We studied three widely distributed lineages of freshwater beetles (the Platambus maculatus complex, the Hydraena gracilis complex, and the genus Oreodytes), all restricted to running waters and including both narrowly distributed southern endemics and widespread European species, some with distributions spanning the Palearctic. Our main goal was to determine the role of the Pleistocene glaciations in shaping the diversification and current distribution of these lineages. We sequenced four mitochondrial and two nuclear genes in populations drawn from across the ranges of these taxa, and used Bayesian probabilities and Maximum Likelihood to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships, age and geographical origin. Our results suggest that all extant species in these groups are of Pleistocene origin. In the H. gracilis complex, the widespread European H. gracilis has experienced a rapid, recent range expansion from northern Anatolia, to occupy almost the whole of Europe. However, in the other two groups widespread central and northern European taxa appear to originate from central Asia, rather than the Mediterranean. These widespread species of eastern origin typically have peripherally isolated forms in the southern Mediterranean peninsulas, which may be remnants of earlier expansion-diversification cycles or result from incipient isolation of populations during the most recent Holocene expansion. The accumulation of narrow endemics of such lineages in the Mediterranean may result from successive cycles of range expansion, with subsequent speciation (and local extinction in glaciated areas) through multiple Pleistocene climatic cycles.

A revision of the Palaearctic Laccobius. The taxonomy of Laccobius is the principal object of the revision. An historical approach to the genus Laccobius shows the Linnaean paternity of generotipus (minutus), the ancient attribution of the insects to various genera and the chief works on this genus.A summary introduction to the morphology presents the characters useful for determining and distinguishing Laccobius. A study of geographical distribution shows subgenera climate preferences. Zoogeographical researches try to individuate barriers, bridges and migratory directions and the possibly speciating isolation. A list of taxa following the palaearctic States concludes the zoogeographical inquiry. Biological notes on eggs, larvae and adults are supplied

The six species assigned to the nigrita-group of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE, 1806 are revised. Hydroporus sabaudus FAUVEL is established as a valid name for the species which has been treated as H. nivalis HEER. Hydroporus nivalis is found to be a senior synonym of H. foveolatus HEER but for matters of stability a proposal for precedence of the name Hydroporus foveolatus over the name Hydroporus nivalis has been submitted to the Commission of Zoological Nomenclature. Hydroporus sabaudus sierranevadensis ssp.n. is described from the Sierra Nevada, Southern Spain. Hydroporus tibetanus ZAITZEV, erroneously attributed to the nigrita-group till now, is transferred to the acutangulus-polaris species complex. Descriptions, distributional data, and some bionomical notes are presented. The great variability of the main characters of the species is discussed. A key to all species of the nigritagroup is presented which will allow the separation of most specimens. The body outlines and aedeagi of the studied species are figured to show the variability of body shape, coloration, and shape of median lobe. Lectotypes are designated for the following nominal species: Hydroporus nigrita (F., 1792), H. trivialis STEPHENS, 1828, H. glabellus THOMSON, 1867, H. subalpinus THOMSON, 1871, H. monilicornis J.SAHLBERG, 1875, H. bisbiguttatus J.SAHLBERG, 1921, H. sabaudus FAUVEL, 1865, H. alticola SHARP, 1882, H. nivalis var. scholzii KOLBE, 1899, H. kozlovskii ZAITZEV, 1927, H. nivalis HEER, 1839, H. foveolatus HEER, 1839, and H. tibetanus ZAITZEV, 1953. Key words: Insecta, Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae, Hydroporus, nigrita-group, new synonymy, new subspecies, key to species, taxonomy, lectotypes, first records, distribution.

A total of 58 samples were collected in the provinces of Antalya, Aydin, Afyon, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Muğla located in southern west Mediterranean region of Turkey by area studies and then identified between 2000-2002. Gyrinus dejeani Brullé, 1832, G.suffriani Scriba, 1855, G. caspius Ménetries, 1832 and G. distinctus Aubé, 1836, Orectochilus villosus (Müller, 1776), Aulonogyrus concinnus (Klug, 1833), A. striatus (Fabricius, 1792) were stated as first records for the southern west Mediterranean region of Turkey as the result of the identification. The habitats and the phenologies of these species found in the area and their distribution data were given. Distribution of each species were given in two categories; as in Turkey shown on the map and in the world.

The European species of Anacaena Thomson are examined. Five species are recognised: A. bipustulata (Marsham), A. globulus (Paykull), A. limbata (Fabricius), A. lutescens (Stephens) and A. rufipes (Guilleheau). It is shown that rufipes and lulescens are distinct species, and not a var. of globulus and a synonym of limbala respectively. The species are keyed and redescribed. Synonymy is given on the basis of examination of type-material. Lectotypes are designated for Anacaena carinata Thomson, 1870, A. immatura Abeille de Perrin, 1901, A. globula var. nitidior Kuwert, 1890, A. variabilis Sharp, 1870, Brachypalpus ambiguus Rey, 1885, Laccobius marshami Stephens, 1839, Hydrophilus bipustulatus Marsham, 1802, Hydrobius foveolatus Stephens, 1829, H. lutescens Stephens, 1829, H. ochraceus Stephens, 1829, Sphaeridium limbalum Fabricius, 1792, and Philydrus nitidus Heer, 1841. Anacaena immalura, A. variabilis, Brachypalpus ambiguus, Laccobius marshami, Hydrobius lutescens var. ß sordens and Philydrus nitidus are placed in synonymy with A. lutescens. A. globulus glabricollis d'Orchymont, 1940 (nec Schaufuss) and A. jordanensis Burmeister, 1985 are placed in synonymy with A. rufipes. Distributional records and data on habitat are given.

Thirty species of Dytiscidae and one species of Noteridae were collected from 80 sampling stations in various aquatic habitats of the southwestern Anatolian region of Turkey (provinces of Antalya, Aydin, Afyon, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Muğla) between 2000 and 2002. Species distributions within Turkey are presented as a catalogue of provincial records. Seventeen species are here recorded for the first time from the southwestern Anatolian region. The presence of the three following species in Turkey is confirmed: Dytiscus semisulcatus MULLER, Eretes griseus (FABRICIUS), Hydaticus ponticus SHARP. Several species known previously from only a few localities in Turkey have been shown to have much wider distributions in the country. In accordance with the present study and literature data 49 species of Dytiscidae and 3 species of Noteridae are known from the southwestern Anatolian region.

Several species of Hydroporus Clair- ville, 1806, chiefly members of the Hydroporus pla- nus-group, are revised at least in part, and information on the taxonomy and the distribution of these and some other species of the genus is given. The follow- ing new synonymies are proposed: Hydroporus trans- grediens Gschwendtner, 1923 = Hydroporus discretus ponticus Zaitzev, 1927 syn.n.; Hydroporus goldschmidti Gschwendtner, 1923 = Hydroporus goldschmidti var. recidivus Gschwendtner, 1923 syn.n., and Hydroporus tessellatus (Drapiez, 1819) = Hydroporus habelmanni Wehncke, 1876 syn.n. Lectotypes of the following taxa are designated: Hydroporus corsicus Wehncke, 1872, Hydroporus cyprius Régimbart, 1878, Hydroporus dis- cretus ponticus Zaitzev, 1927, Hydroporus distinguen- dus var. estrellensis Schaufuss, 1882, Hydroporus lim- batus Aubé, 1838, Hydroporus brucki Wehncke, 1875, Hydroporus analis Aubé, 1838, Hydroporus decipiens Sharp, 1878, Hydroporus habelmanni Wehncke, 1876, and Hydroporus bicolor G. Müller, 1933. Several first records are given: H. transgrediens from Armenia, Azer- baijan, Iran, Turkey, and Turkmenistan, H. pubescens (Gyllenhal, 1808) from Georgia and Asian Russia (the Urals), and Hydroporus marginatus (Duftschmid, 1805) from Iran and Kazakhstan.
