Diving Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae, Noteridae) of the Southwestern Anatolian Region of Turkey

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Thirty species of Dytiscidae and one species of Noteridae were collected from 80 sampling stations in various aquatic habitats of the southwestern Anatolian region of Turkey (provinces of Antalya, Aydin, Afyon, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Muğla) between 2000 and 2002. Species distributions within Turkey are presented as a catalogue of provincial records. Seventeen species are here recorded for the first time from the southwestern Anatolian region. The presence of the three following species in Turkey is confirmed: Dytiscus semisulcatus MULLER, Eretes griseus (FABRICIUS), Hydaticus ponticus SHARP. Several species known previously from only a few localities in Turkey have been shown to have much wider distributions in the country. In accordance with the present study and literature data 49 species of Dytiscidae and 3 species of Noteridae are known from the southwestern Anatolian region.

ABSTRACT: Thirty species of Dytiscidae and one species of Noteridae were collected from
80 sampling stations in various aquatic habitats of the southwestern Anatolian region of
Turkey (provinces of Antalya, Aydın, Afyon, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Muğla) between
2000 and 2002. Species distributions within Turkey are presented as a catalogue of
provincial records. Seventeen species are here recorded for the first time from the
southwestern Anatolian region. The presence of the three following species in Turkey is
confirmed: Dytiscus semisulcatus MULLER, Eretes griseus (FABRICIUS), Hydaticus
ponticus SHARP. Several species known previously from only a few localities in Turkey
have been shown to have much wider distributions in the country. In accordance with the
present study and literature data 49 species of Dytiscidae and 3 species of Noteridae are
known from the southwestern Anatolian region.
KEY WORDS: Coleoptera, diving beetles, Dytiscidae, Noteridae, faunistics, Turkey
The Dytiscidae and Noteridae water beetles are commonly called the
diving beetles, since their hind legs are usually highly modified for
swimming. Both families are cosmopolitan in distribution; although in
contrast to the latter occur primarily in the tropical regions of the world
(Zalat et. al., 1999).
Thirtytwo species of Dytiscidae and three species of Noteridae have
been recorded from the studied region in the following published
works: Balfour-Browne (1963), Guéorguiev (1968, 1981), Fery (1991),
Fery & Nilsson (1993), Shaverdo (2004), Barclay et al. (2001), and Fery
et al. (2001, 2005).
The purpose of this paper is to present a checklist of the diving
beetles of the southwestern Anatolian region of Turkey, combining
literature data and the results of our collecting trips between 2000-
2002.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
This study is based on 208 specimens of adult dytiscids and noterids
collected in the southwestern Anatolian region of Turkey (Fig. 1;

Antalya, Aydın, Afyon, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Muğla) between
2000 and 2002. Specimens were collected from various aquatic
habitats, using a ladle or dip net having a 1 mm mesh size. The beetles
were killed in 70 % ethanol and in the laboratory were cleaned of debris
with a small paintbrush. Aedeagophore was dissected under the
stereomicroscope and left in 10 % KOH solution for about 1–2 hours.
Samples were identified using keys by Zaitzev (1972), Franciscolo
(1979) and Nilsson & Holmen (1995). Materials have been deposited in
the Zoological Museum of the Gazi University (=GUZM), Ankara,
Turkey.
In the checklist nomenclature is based on Nilsson (2005, 2006).

Hydroporus esseri sp. n. is described from the Köprülü Canyon near Sagirin in southern Turkey (Antalya province), where it was found in a backwater pool of the Köprülü River. It is the smallest species of the genus Hydroporus Clairville, 1806 recorded so far from Turkey. Morphologically the new species is very close to Hydroporus umbrosus (Gyllenhal, 1808), which is widespread in North and Central Europe, Siberia and Far East. H. esseri sp. n. can be separated from H. umbrosus chiefly by its smaller size, the shape of the median lobe and surface colour. The aedeagi and habitus of both species are illustrated. Notes on their distribution and life habitats are given. Hydroporus memnonius Nicolai, 1822 is recorded for the first time from Turkey, and H. umbrosus for the first time from Slovakia. Altogether 180 species of the genus Hydroporus are now reported world-wide and 34 from Turkey.

This study was carried out in order to identify Dytiscidae species in the Artvin and Rize provinces in 2000 and 2001. A total of 24 species and 4 subspecies from 14 genera were identified at the localities including the centre of Artvin, Rize and their environs. The Dytiscidae is a moderate-sized family of aquatic beetles and commonly called predaceous diving beetles. Dytiscids range in size from 1 to 47 mm. The antennae are filiform and 11-segmented. The head has prognathous mouthparts. The eyes are entire, flush with the side of the head. The pronotum is broadest at its base, with sharp lateral margins. The elytra have few or no striae, and completely cover the abdomen. The legs have the metacoxae greatly enlarged and invading the metasternum, reaching to the elytra. The metatarsi are tapering, often fringed with swimming hairs. The abdomen has the first visible sternite divided by metacoxae: the first 3 segments are connate. The tarsal formula is usually 5-5-5, sometimes 4-4-5 (Booth et al., 1990). The males of some species have peculiar front tarsi that bear large suction discs; these discs are used to hold the smooth elytra of the female during mating (Borror et al., 1981). Some dytiscids have expanded fore and mid tarsi, with smaller suction hairs, in both sexes. Most dytiscids are excellent swimmers with compact, flattened, streamlined bodies. The flattened oar-like mid and hind legs often bear fringes of long swimming hairs. Adults and larvae of dytiscids occur together and have adapted to almost all aquatic habitats imaginable. Most dytiscids occur in lentic habitats such as shallow, weedy lakes, ponds, ditches, stock ponds, and springs while some occur in more specialized habitats (Spangler, 1981). Both adults and larvae are aquatic and predaceous, feeding not only on a wide range of invertebrates such as molluscs, annelids, and insect larvae, but also on vertebrates such as fish fry and small amphibians (Booth et al., 1990). Most dytiscids occur in shallow waters to about 1 metre in depth because most have to rise to the surface periodically to renew their air supply (Spangler, 1981). Generally, densely vegetated waters have a more diverse dytiscid fauna than barren ones (Nilsson & Holmen, 1995).

Altogether 180 species of the genus Hydropo-rus are now reported worldwide and 34 from Turkey.

Spatial differentiation of the Eurasian freshwater faunas is analyzed based on the original and published data on the aquatic insects, crustaceans, and mollusks (about 8800 species in total). The Hacker-Dice similarity index is employed as a principal criterion of differentiation. The schemes of biogeographic zonation are constructed for the nine large macrobenthic taxa, namely, Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptcra, Malacostraca, Gastropoda, and Bivalvia. Discussed are principal discordances in distribution of three different ecological-systematic groups of the macrobenthos, namely, limnophylic insects, rheophylic insects, and crustaceans with mollusks. A generalized zonation system of the Eurasian fresh waters is elaborated, which is fundamentally divided into Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. The former is further divided into five subregions: Euro-Ob, Near East, Central Asia, Eastern Siberia, and Japan. The latter is divided into three subregions: Indo-Himalaya, China, and Malay. Preliminary classification of the provinces is also provided. Disagreements between the biogeographic systems of different authors are discussed.

Agabus iranicus GUEORGUIEV, 1965, is a junior subjective synonym of Agabus faldermanni ZAITZEV, 1927, syn.nov. A lectotype is designated for Gaurodytes palaestinus ZIMMERMANN, 1934. The distribution of A. faldermanni is mapped. Delimitations of the guttat us-, nebulosus-and paludosus-groups are discussed. It is concluded that A. faldermanni either should be placed in a group of its own or placed in the guttatus-group which necessitates a widening of the definition of the group.

The six species assigned to the nigrita-group of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE, 1806 are revised. Hydroporus sabaudus FAUVEL is established as a valid name for the species which has been treated as H. nivalis HEER. Hydroporus nivalis is found to be a senior synonym of H. foveolatus HEER but for matters of stability a proposal for precedence of the name Hydroporus foveolatus over the name Hydroporus nivalis has been submitted to the Commission of Zoological Nomenclature. Hydroporus sabaudus sierranevadensis ssp.n. is described from the Sierra Nevada, Southern Spain. Hydroporus tibetanus ZAITZEV, erroneously attributed to the nigrita-group till now, is transferred to the acutangulus-polaris species complex. Descriptions, distributional data, and some bionomical notes are presented. The great variability of the main characters of the species is discussed. A key to all species of the nigritagroup is presented which will allow the separation of most specimens. The body outlines and aedeagi of the studied species are figured to show the variability of body shape, coloration, and shape of median lobe. Lectotypes are designated for the following nominal species: Hydroporus nigrita (F., 1792), H. trivialis STEPHENS, 1828, H. glabellus THOMSON, 1867, H. subalpinus THOMSON, 1871, H. monilicornis J.SAHLBERG, 1875, H. bisbiguttatus J.SAHLBERG, 1921, H. sabaudus FAUVEL, 1865, H. alticola SHARP, 1882, H. nivalis var. scholzii KOLBE, 1899, H. kozlovskii ZAITZEV, 1927, H. nivalis HEER, 1839, H. foveolatus HEER, 1839, and H. tibetanus ZAITZEV, 1953. Key words: Insecta, Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae, Hydroporus, nigrita-group, new synonymy, new subspecies, key to species, taxonomy, lectotypes, first records, distribution.

The genus Eretes Laporte is revised. Four species are recognized in the genus; 1) E. australis (Erichson) (= E. punctipennis (MacLeay)), 2) E. griseus (Fabricius) (= E. plicipennis (Motschulsky), = E. succinctus (Klug), = E. moroderi Báguena Corella), 3) E. sticticus (Linnaeus) (= E. punctatus (Zoubkoff), = E. helvolus (Klug), = E. occidentalis (Erichson), = E. conicollis (Wollaston), = E. subcoriaceus (Wollaston), = E. subdiaphanus (Wollaston)) and 4) E. explicitus Miller, sp. n. The taxonomic history of the group is reviewed. The tribe and genus are diagnosed and a key to the species is provided. Each species is diagnosed, its general distribution is provided and important morphological features are illustrated. The larva of E. australis is illustrated and used to diagnose the tribe. Evidence for the sister-group relationship between Eretini and Aciliini and for relationships within the tribe is presented based on characters from adult and larval morphology.
