The Impact of Human Resource Management Practices on Turnover and Productivity

This paper comprehensively examined the linkages between systems of High Performance Work Practices and firm performance. Results based on a national sample of nearly one thousand firms indicate that these practices have an economically and statistically significant impact on both intermediate outcomes (turnover and productivity) and short- and long-term measures of corporate financial performance. Support for the predictions that the impact of High Performance Work Practices is in part contingent on their interrelationships and links with competitive strategy was limited.

The objective of this study was to analyse the evolutionary field of sustainable human resource management (S-(HRM)) over four strategically chosen sub-periods in order to understand its behaviour in the period from 1991 to 2024. We started by conducting a comprehensive review of research articles related to our topic, aiming to produce a scientific, accurate, and well-argued result through quantitative and empirical research, incorporating both factorial and exploratory analyses. We began by carrying out an exhaustive review of different research articles related to our topic in order to generate a scientific, truthful and argumentative result, from quantitative and empirical research, in relation to a factorial and exploratory analysis. Regarding the analysis of the period between the years chosen for this research (1991–2024), we observe that the subject analysed has gradually evolved, with an increase in publications, as evidenced in the different graphs. In turn, the analysis of the most prominent themes for the sub-periods is illustrated by their classification in strategic diagrams and structured spheres quantified in the statistical software SciMAT v1.1.06, through keywords, which is the strategy best adapted to this type of research. The analysis (keywords) configures the most important concepts of the research field.

High-performance work systems (HPWS) are critical for fostering an effective and efficient environment for superior organizational outcomes. HPWS have been positively linked with various outcomes like employee engagement, productivity, organizational performance, job satisfaction, and employee commitment. However, past literature has scant research on mediators that link HPWS with its outcomes. Therefore, this article investigates how HPWS impacts the affective commitment (AC) of employees. By utilizing social exchange theory (SET), we propose that HPWS positively impacts AC through the mediating role of job embeddedness (JE). Further, drawing from organizational support theory, it is also postulated that the relationship between HPWS and AC is mediated by perceived organizational support (POS). We surveyed 332 full-time employees. The analysis utilized structural equation modeling. The findings state that JE and POS mediate the impact of HPWS on employees’ AC. The contribution of the study lies in explaining the mechanisms through which HPWS leads to AC among employees. The study gives organizations the valuable knowledge that HPWS is a widely used framework, and organizations should concentrate on its successful implementation. The study offers managers valuable insights into the significance of effectively adopting HPWS.

Purpose The present research work reviews and maps the thematic evolution of the interface between human resource (HR) practices and service quality (SQ) over the last 33 years. Design/methodology/approach The authors employed systematic literature review (SLR), bibliometric analysis and visualization to comprehensively map 215 papers extracted from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The present study also helps to document the research themes that evolved through co-occurrence networks and thematic maps. Findings The study identifies that HR practices are the central drivers for maintaining SQ in an organization and found that teamwork, empowerment, recruitment, selection, training and reward are key for improving the SQ. It concludes the impact of HR practices on SQ, develops the knowledge structure of human resource management (HRM) operations and SQ literature and organizes it under various dimensions as antecedents and outcomes. As its foremost input, the current study proposes human resource practices and service quality (HRPSQ) framework for comprehensive HR practices and SQ in an organization. Originality/value The study is unique as it map the journey of HR practices and SQ and proposes a framework for improved performance.

Although there is a lot of literature on sustainable management, there is still a lack of specific insight into the implementation of sustainable E-HRM practices. Organizational, procedural, and external factors pose challenges for sustainable E-HRM strategies. Politicians are using the notion of sustainable management, but its practical ramifications remain limited. It is challenging to conceptualize sustainability in management practices. It has been in a state of constant flux. It is inclined toward strategic human resource management, but the existing literature lacks strategic HRM models or an analytical framework for comprehending sustainability. The article employs social cognitive theory to discuss a conceptual framework for long-term, purposeful corporate sustainability. It utilizes a contingency approach for devising sustainability strategies and leadership competencies for different categories of sustainable organizations. The article advances the concept of corporate sustainability and also presents a unique psychological perspective for exploring the phenomenon.

This study investigates the complex relationships between high-performance work systems, entrepreneurial orientation, and firm performance under varying levels of environmental hostility. Using empirical data from a representative sample of 263 US firms, the paper explores these dynamics through the lens of the resource-based view and configurational theory. The study is the first one to analyze how high-performance work systems and environmental hostility interact to influence the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance. The findings challenge the traditional notion of high-performance work systems as universally beneficial, revealing their potential to constrain firm performance, possibly due to structural rigidity inherent in centralized systems and standardization procedures and the contextual misalignment between human resource practices and employee work and business environments. While high-performance work systems seem to stifle the display of entrepreneurial behaviors, environmental hostility enhances firm performance by activating entrepreneurial orientation in hostile conditions. In benign environments, entrepreneurial orientation’s impact on performance is less pronounced. The study also uncovers the complex dynamics of the three-way interaction, showing that in highly hostile environments, entrepreneurial orientation can thrive even without well-developed high-performance work systems, making the case for flexibility and adaptability for activating entrepreneurial behavior in firms. These insights contribute to a nuanced theoretical understanding of how internal and external factors interact to influence firm performance. We provide actionable insights for managers on how to strategize about high-performance work systems to support entrepreneurial orientation effectively, especially in challenging and hostile environments, and offer specific guidance on the optimum configurations of high-performance work systems and entrepreneurial orientation for firm performance in benign and hostile environments. Finally, we present the study’s limitations and outline the future research agenda for scholars, calling on them to incorporate longitudinal and configurational approaches to understand the complex relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance.

Do unions facilitate or hamper the effectiveness of high-performance work systems (HPWS)? Despite the long-standing interest among labor and human resource scholars on this matter, relevant studies are limited and dated. This research investigates whether and how the interplay between HPWS and unions affects both organizational performance and employee well-being outcomes. The authors argue while unions may attenuate the HPWS effects on organizational performance due to decreased performance climate, the overall impacts of unions are likely beneficial, as they facilitate cooperative climate that contributes to organizational performance and enhances employee well-being, which positively affects longer term organizational outcomes. Analyzing longitudinal data with 934 observations from 287 South Korean firms, the authors show that unions indeed facilitate the positive effects of HPWS on organizational performance and employee well-being, mediated by enhanced cooperative climate. They did not find statistically meaningful evidence that unions mitigate HPWS’ effects on performance climate and subsequent organizational performance.

Human resource management (HRM) plays a vital role in the growth and sustainability of companies and in achieving company objectives, as HRM relates to the workers’ practices and their functional roles. The main objective of this paper is to identify the HRM strategies, practices and their impact on worker’s performance in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Industry. The method which was used in this study was based on three stages. After the completion of the database and web engine search, the total number of sources found were 149. Next, the sources’ titles and abstracts were reviewed and those marked as relevant to the review were chosen to be retrieved and thoroughly reviewed. The sources were chosen based on the following inclusion criteria: (a) the sources implied in HRM strategies in the AEC industry, (b) the sources released between 2010 and 2023, (c) the online sources, and (d) the English-language sources. Also, the selected sources are reviewed to extract the factors using the content analysis method which is a thorough and systematic study of the contents of a specific body of material. In addition, content analysis is carried out to extract practices of HRM strategies and their impact on worker performance. This can be followed up and observed through the figures and tables that come later. As a final result, which concludes the outputs of the previous stages which results in a first-round total of 31 HRM strategies practice but in the second-round result of reaching 39 different sources from 149 related sources. After that, discussing the most popular between them based on the appearance of it in the sources which reviewed beside that, the impact of it on worker’s performance were viewed in the AEC industry. Based on that, it was found the following 5 categories of strategies: (1) Human Resources Planning; (2) Polarization and Recruitment; (3) Training and Development; (4) Human Resources Following-up; (5) Career Planning. At the same time the most popular practices are based on appearance in sources: In terms of Human Resources Planning Strategy, “The company’s management analyses the functions accurately”. In Polarization and Recruitment Strategy, “The company’s internal resources are the best to provide its human resource needs” and “Selection and recruitment policies are in line with the company’s current and future needs”. In Training and Development of Human Resources Strategy, “The company evaluates the results of development and training programs to achieve the purpose of feedback”. In Human Resources Following-up Strategy, “There is a fair incentive system in the company”. In Career Planning Strategy, “There is a clear description of the relationship of workers to each other”. Finally, human resource management strategies and practices are one of the major players in the AEC industry, which is evidenced by its impact on the performance of workers.
