Pioneer Advantage: Marketing Logic or Marketing Legend?

Abstract

Several studies have shown that pioneers have long-lived market share advantages and are likely to be market leaders in their product categories. However, that research has potential limitations: the reliance on a few established databases, the exclusion of nonsurvivors, and the use of single-informant self-reports for data collection. The authors of this study use an alternate method, historical analysis, to avoid these limitations. Approximately 500 brands in 50 product categories are analyzed. The results show that almost half of the market pioneers fail and their mean market share is much lower than that found in other studies. Also, early market leaders have much greater long-term success and enter an average of 13 years after pioneers.

The purpose of the study has been to fill the gap detected in the literature and to analyze whether the application of management of R&D in accordance with UNE 166002:2021 allows companies to obtain higher product innovation and better performance, specifically incremental and radical product innovations. Design/methodology/approach The population used in this study included Spanish manufacturing organizations that were active, had more than 50 employees according to the SABI. The information was collected through a structured questionnaire previously tested using a company specializing in the sector under the supervision of the authors. A total of 1,154 companies were randomly contacted in order to reach an acceptable number of 225 valid questionnaires. The data analysis has been carried out with structural equation methodology. Findings The results obtained with a sample of 225 companies show that the application of this standard for innovation management promotes the development of new products with incremental and radical changes, and improves business performance. It has also been found that incremental and radical product innovations mediate the relationship between this standard and performance. Research limitations/implications Firstly, the survey is only addressed to the company's operations manager. Secondly, the sample used is cross-sectional, whereas innovation management implies a broad implementation process. Practical implications Managers must know that radical and incremental product innovation can improve the company's operational performance. And the most direct implication of this work is that, those companies that are committed to the development of innovations should seriously consider the application of the principles incorporated in Standard 166,002, as an instrument that improves the results of innovation in the organization. Since this SIMS promotes both types of innovations, it improves results directly and indirectly through these product innovations. Originality/value The existing literature indicates that no empirical study has focused on the benefits of this SIMSs for innovation and BP. This paper fills this gap detected in the literature and analyzes the results of the implementation of this standard on incremental and radical product innovations and business performance.

We carry out empirical research to solve the conflicts about the effects of innovation and imitation strategies on product performance in the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The conflicts stem from theoretical interference. Data are collected from senior managers in the Chinese market through an online questionnaire. The relationship and regulating effects of environmental factors are measured with statistical software. An innovation strategy is the better choice for Chinese SMEs. Demand uncertainty enhances this effect, but technological turbulence harms innovators. Competitive intensity does not influence innovators and imitators. The results provide a practical suggestion for Chinese SMEs when faced with strategy choice issues.

This article describes research conducted to determine which variables influence the opportunity evaluation by emerging market entrepreneurs. The study was conducted with quantitative research techniques, using data from 124 entrepreneurs in micro and small Brazilian enterprises. Hypotheses were tested with confirmatory analyses and using Structural Equations Modelling. According to previous research, results demonstrated that the smaller the perceived risk, the more positively the entrepreneurs will evaluate opportunities, affecting their propensity to act. However, the results of tests to measure correlations between the occurrence of cognitive biases and other variables were not significant, contradicting previous work that has stated that correlations exist. The findings support the concept that variables ignored when analysing our decision-making process are relevant to the result of our decisions. Besides, they may result in inconsistent illusions that can lead the decision-maker into unwarranted confidence in their capacity to understand whether an assessment of opportunity, which is inherent to the entrepreneurial process, is truly an opportunity or an illusion.

When the concept of strategic trade-offs was introduced by Skinner in 1969, an intense academic debate followed. On one hand, World Class Manufacturing proponents rejected the idea whilst others recommended the careful consideration of trade-offs when designing production systems. Today, history repeats itself, and the same debate exists in the field of sustainable operations management, with some researchers documenting trade-offs between economic and environmental performance, and others rejecting this view. This paper shows how this debate has profound implementation implications: the first view calls for incremental improvements, whereas the latter calls for radical innovation. This paper combines the behavioural theory of the firm with Schmenner and Swink's (1998) theory of performance frontiers to define sustainability performance frontiers. These frontiers define legitimate managerial boundaries for searching for sustainability and remove the perceived conflict between the two views of sustainability trade-offs.

The study explores a hitherto neglected area of strategic corporate entrepreneurship in services firms, the association of organizational factors with different strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. It represents a first step toward understanding how internal organizational factors may spur different forms of strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices within services firms, especially those operating in the financial sector. Data for the study were collected through a survey study and the sample consisted of employees at a major insurance company in Sweden. The sample includes five offices placed in the north-eastern in Sweden and four offices ubicated in Stockholm. Using structural equation modelling, it was found that whereas organizational factors such as management support and reward/reinforcement have a positive effect on both incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices, the organizational factor work discretion presents a differentiated effect. The study provides an important step toward understanding the internal factors that spur employees toward strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices in financial services firms. Moreover, the study develops a potential measure of incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. In terms of practical implications, the findings offer managers a solid foundation on which to base their decisions to create and improve an internal organizational environment that facilitates strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. Purpose This study examines the impact of doing, using and interacting (DUI) and science, technology and innovation (STI) learning mechanisms on firm performance, investigating their influence on financial performance through innovative performance in machine tools and textile manufacturing firms in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Design/methodology/approach Primary data was collected through a survey of 202 manufacturing firms across two industries, as secondary data inadequately captures learning mechanisms, particularly for DUI mode. The study employed structural equation modelling (SEM) alongside descriptive analysis to examine the impact of STI–DUI learning mechanisms on performance. Findings The study reveals that firms, despite minimal investment in formal R&D, effectively learn through networking and imitation (DUI mechanisms). They also benefit from local industrial training institutions. Notably, innovative performance mediates the relationship between learning mechanisms (imitation, networking and industry institutions) and firms' financial performance. Originality/value The literature was found to be scant in terms of understanding the nature of firms learning mechanism, especially for the firms undertaken for the analysis. Although having distinguished nature of knowledge and learning required to compete for the products manufactured in machine tools and textiles industries, local conditions, domestic national institutions and regional aspects makes the industries unique case to understand the challenges amidst unique features of these industries. The study is expected to fill-in the gap in the literature of manufacturing industries belonging to developing countries in the era of increasing technological competition in the integrated world economies.

‘First-mover advantage’ refers to the benefit enjoyed by a firm as the consequence of its early entry into a new market. Although the term suggests that early entry is desirable, the advantages of pioneering a new market are often offset by disadvantages. The question of whether a ‘first-mover advantage’ is likely on balance in any specific context depends on the characteristics of the emerging market and the entering firm.

In this study, we investigate how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engage in business model innovation in response to technology shifts, and the ensuing impact of this innovation on performance. Using structural equation modeling, we analyze data from a survey of 1328 European SMEs and find that technological turbulence affects the scope and novelty of business model innovation, and that these dimensions of innovation in turn affect firm performance. We show that these relationships are doubly contingent: both SME size (micro, small, or medium) and time since market entry are relevant. Early entrant firms are more responsive to technological turbulence through both dimensions of business model innovation, as the learning accruing in these SMEs since market entry motivates and informs business model innovation. There are meaningful differences in these relationships for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Our findings advance the theoretical understanding of the relationships between technology, entry order, business model innovation, and performance and also serve to inform managers’ estimations of the implications of technology turbulence and business model innovation for performance.

Multinational firms that enter regional country blocks, such as Latin America, often choose a beachhead country, i.e. an entry point, as a launchpad into other countries in the region. While some recent scholarship examines beachhead decisions, research that explicitly examines beachhead choice in a regional context and the subsequent speed of expansion and firm performance in the region is surprisingly absent in international business literature. To address this gap, we examine whether the beachhead choice affects the speed and performance of regional expansion of multinational firms. We also analyse whether a firm’s regional speed and performance are dependent on the country's sequence of expansion. Using a uniquely compiled dataset of firms that entered Latin America during 1990–2005, we find that a firm’s regional speed and performance are sensitive to both the beachhead choice and the specific path the firm takes. Specifically, firms that choose regionally representative beachheads fare better.

All previous empirical work assessing the effects of pioneering on firm performance treats pioneering as an exogenous variable. The authors develop a theoretical model of the entry decision that suggests treatment of pioneering as an endogenous variable. They test the model by reestimating a recent empirical pioneering model. Using Hausman's specification test, they find statistically significant bias in the exogenous pioneering model. In assessing the effect of pioneering on market share, they find substantive differences between the biased and inconsistent exogenous pioneering estimates and the consistent endogenous estimates in terms of both statistical and practical significance.

A national survey of 145 reseller buyers was used to study how brand entry order into new categories affects reseller buyers' attitudes toward new items. The literature on pioneer brand advantage is extended by finding empirical support for an advantage to pioneer brands with resellers. Also, an important distinction is found between the first me-too follower brand and second or later me-too follower brands. Specifically, reseller buyers have a very favorable attitude toward pioneer brands, a less favorable but still positive attitude toward first me-too follower brands, and an unfavorable attitude toward second or later me-too follower brands. An adaptation of the multiattribute attitude model (that of "importance-likelihood") served as the psychological basis in an effort to explain how and why these attitudinal differences occurred. A causal model framework then was applied to the data to investigate the significant interrelationships between brand order of entry and reseller buyer beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. The theoretical and managerial implications of entry order effects are discussed.

This article reports the results of Project NewProd, an extensive investigation into what separates successful from unsuccessful new industrial products. Multivariate methods are used to probe this success/failure question. The dimensions underlying success and failure are identified. The dominant role of product strategy and the need for a strong market orientation clearly are demonstrated.

This study tests six market entry barriers in consumer, and industrial markets, i.e., cost advantages of incumbents, product differentiation of incumbents, capital requirements, customer switching costs, access to distribution channels, and government policy. The market entry decisions of 137 executives from 49 major U.S. corporations were modeled with a decision making instrument consisting of 32 market entry opportunities. Each respondent's decisions were modeled using regression analysis. The differences concerning the importance of the six market entry barriers for early and late entry into consumer, and industrial goods markets were investigated. The results indicate that marketing executives use all six barriers in making market entry decisions. The cost advantages of incumbents is considered to be the most important relative to other market entry barriers. Important differences were also discovered among the other five barriers. Furthermore, the importance of barriers also differs for entry into consumer versus industrial goods markets.

Results of four studies demonstrate that perceptions of how different a brand is from other brands in the product category affect perceptions of the brand's position within the category. Specifically, perceptions that a brand is strongly discrepant result in a subtyped (or niche) position, whereas perceptions that a brand is moderately discrepant result in a differentiated position within the general category. Perceptions of discrepancy are affected both by the extent of discrepancy on an attribute and whether the discrepant information is concentrated in a single ad for the brand or dispersed across multiple ads for the product. The effects associated with a subtyped position, in comparison with a differentiated position, are identified (study 1) and are found to increase with time (study 2). The subtyped versus differentiated distinction for a strongly versus moderately discrepant brand is validated with a sorting task (study 3). This distinction is shown to hold in the context of multiple discrepant brands that differ in their extent of discrepancy (study 4). Implications of the findings for a theoretical understanding of subtyping versus differentiation and for the application of positioning strategies in the marketplace are discussed.

The relationship between the substitution in use approach to product-market structure and cognitive accounts of product category structures is investigated in terms of the role of product usage context. Studies 1 and 2 show that distinctive usages predict similarity judgments, whereas usage versatility predicts prototypicality. The results of a third study suggest that individual usage contexts are associated with subcategories that involve restructuring of the overall category and, as such, guide context-specific product recall. Conceptual and managerial implications of the findings are discussed.

In a broad cross section of consumer goods businesses, market pioneers generally have substantially higher market shares than late entrants. In fact, the empirical association between order of entry and market share is almost as strong as the association between market share and return on investment. The authors examine theoretical sources behind this relationship. The empirical results suggest that the higher pioneer shares are derived from firm-based superiority as well as from consumer information advantages. Nine hypotheses are developed and tested empirically. The results also indicate that order of market entry is a major determinant of market share.
