Bulk tank milk selenium and its association with milk production parameters in Canadian dairy herds

An observational study was conducted in 63 Canadian dairy farms to evaluate the association of bulk tank milk selenium (Se) concentration (BTSe) with average daily milk yield, milk fat and milk protein, bulk tank somatic cell count (BTSCC), and the probability of being a Staphylococcus aureus-positive herd. Bulk tank milk samples collected between March 2007 and February 2008 were evaluated for BTSCC, S. aureus culture status, and BTSe. Mean BTSe was 0.51 ± 0.15 μmol/L; no herds were classified as deficient or marginal based on BTSe. Bulk tank milk Se was unconditionally associated with milk production; however, adjusting by region indicated a confounding effect of this variable. There was no relationship between BTSe and BTSCC. Higher values of BTSe were associated with lower risk of being a S. aureus-positive herd, possibly as a result of a more robust udder immune response, or as a result of providing Se at a higher rate as one component of an udder health program that reduces risk of being S. aureus positive.

    ABSTRACT: Uncontrolled or impaired immune and inflammatory responses in periparturient dairy cows are associated with increased incidence and severity of infectious diseases. The progressive development of oxidative stress during the transition from late gestation to peak lactation is thought to be a significant underlying factor leading to dysfunctional immune cell responses. Certain trace minerals, such as selenium (Se), can ameliorate oxidative stress and reduce the severity of several economically important diseases in dairy cattle including mastitis and metritis. Many of the health benefits of Se can be attributed to the antioxidant functions of selenoproteins. Changes in selenoprotein activity as a consequence of Se nutritional status can directly alter a number of critical cellular functions involved in the inflammatory response. A better understanding of how Se can optimize immune cell responses may facilitate the design of nutritional regimes that will reduce health disorders during the periparturient period.

    ABSTRACT: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la concentración de selenio (Se) en muestras de leche procedentes de rebaños lecheros del sur de Chile y sus eventuales variaciones estacionales, y complementariamente examinar la eventual relación entre dicha concentración con algunos indicadores de producción. Para ello se seleccionaron 59 rebaños lecheros del sur de Chile, en los que se obtuvieron muestras de leche del estanque predial en cuatro oportunidades, primavera 2007 y verano, otoño e invierno del 2008 para determinar la concentración de Se en leche entera. Además, se colectó información del manejo, de la nutrición mineral en el predio y de indicadores de producción de leche, como producción media, contenido de grasa, proteína y recuento de células somáticas. Los datos fueron evaluados mediante modelos mixtos de regresión lineal. La concentración media de Se en leche del estanque fue 14,7 µg/L (DE: 6,5 µg/L), señalando una elevada varianza entre rebaños (44%), no observándose ninguna asociación con los parámetros productivos evaluados. Pese a lo anterior, un 82% del total de muestras colectadas (n = 231) presentaron valores < 20 µg/L. La concentración de Se en la leche de estanques de enfriamiento en rebaños lecheros seleccionados en el sur de Chile indica que las vacas presentan un inadecuado balance de Se, que no necesariamente se ve reflejado en una baja producción o calidad sanitaria de la leche.

    ABSTRACT: Dairy cows are especially vulnerable to health disorders during the transition period, when they shift from late pregnancy to the onset of lactation. Diseases at this stage affect not only the animals' well-being, but also cause a major economic impact in dairy farms, because apart from treatment costs, affected cows will not reach their peak milk-producing capacity. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to oxidative stress, which has been identified as an underlying factor of dysfunctional inflammatory responses. Supplementation with vitamins and trace elements attempts to minimize the harmful consequences of excessive ROS production, thereby trying to improve animals' health status and to reduce disease incidence. However, results regarding the effects of supplementing antioxidants on dairy cows' health and performance have been inconsistent, because in most cases, the antioxidant potential of the animals was not assessed beforehand and the nutritional strategy planned accordingly. Therefore, reviewing the physiological and harmful effects of ROS production, along with the different options available for assessing the redox balance in dairy cattle and some of the key findings of different supplementation trials, could bring one step forward the on-farm application of determinations of oxidative status for establishing nutritional strategies early enough in the dry period that could improve transition cow health.
