Search for pulsating pre‐main‐sequence stars in NGC 6383

A search for pulsating pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars was performed in the young open cluster NGC 6383 using CCD time-series
photometry in Johnson B and V filters. With an age of only ∼1.7 Myr all cluster members later than spectral type A0 have not reached the ZAMS yet, hence
being ideal candidates for investigating PMS pulsation among A- and F-type stars. In total 286 stars have been analysed using
classical Fourier techniques. From about a dozen stars within the boundaries of the classical instability strip, two stars
were found to pulsate: NGC 6383 #170, with five frequencies simultaneously, and NGC 6383 #198, with a single frequency. In
addition, NGC 6383 #152 is a suspected PMS variable star, but our data remain inconclusive. Linear, non-adiabatic models assuming
PMS evolutionary phase and purely radial pulsation were calculated for the two new PMS pulsators. NGC 6383 #170 appears to
pulsate radially in third and fifth overtones, while the other three frequencies seem to be of non-radial nature. NGC 6383
#198 pulsates monoperiodically, most probably in the third radial overtone. Magnitudes and B - V colours were available in the literature for only one third of all stars and we used them for calibrating the remaining.

    ABSTRACT: In a sample of six young open clusters we investigated 1753 objects using the narrow band, three filter Delta a photometric system resulting in the detection of eleven bona-fide magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars and five Be or metal-weak stars. The results for the distant cluster NGC 3105 is most important because of the still unknown influence of the global metallicity gradient of the Milky Way. These findings confirm that CP stars are present in open clusters of very young ages (log t > 6.90) at galactocentric distances up to 11.4 kpc. For all programme clusters the age, reddening, and distance modulus were derived using the corresponding isochrones. Some additional variable stars within Stock 16 could be identified by comparing different photometric studies. Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&A

    ABSTRACT: Asteroseismology of pulsating pre-main sequence (PMS) stars has the potential of testing the validity of current models of PMS structure and evolution. As a first step, a sufficiently large sample of pulsating PMS stars has to be established, which allows to select candidates optimally suited for a detailed asteroseismological analysis based on photometry from space or ground based network data. A search for pulsating PMS members in the young open clusters IC 4996 and NGC 6530 has been performed to improve the sample of known PMS pulsators. As both clusters are younger than 10 million years, all members with spectral types later than A0 have not reached the zero-age main sequence yet. Hence, IC 4996 and NGC 6530 are most suitable to search for PMS pulsation among their A- and F-type cluster stars. CCD time series photometry in Johnson B and V filters has been obtained for IC 4996 and NGC 6530. The resulting light curves for 113 stars in IC 4996 and 194 stars in NGC 6530 have been subject to detailed frequency analyses. 2 delta Scuti-like PMS stars have been discovered in IC 4996 and 6 in NGC 6530. For another PMS star in each cluster, pulsation can only be suspected. According to the computed pulsation constants, the newly detected PMS stars seem to prefer to pulsate in a similar fashion to the classical delta Scuti stars, and with higher overtone modes.
