The evaluation of belief rules in the conclusion are divided into two ranks firstly, which means making a two-value judgment on a decision problem. Then many belief rule bases are set to solve some sub problems simultaneously. Finally results of many sub problems by multi-base reasoning method are mixed to solve the classification problem. Experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed belief rule base reasoning classfication method.

Some evidence for a visual slant averaging mechanism

It was hypothesized that when two surfaces at different angles of slant were presented stereoscopically, the resulting percept would be a single slanted surface seen at an angle equal to the mean slant of the stimulus objects. Fifteen Ss were tested on the Groman binocular disparator under 15 different conditions of disparity, ranging from −20 deg to +20 deg. Ten judgments were made for each ... [Show full abstract] condition in a random order. The stimulus cards were two 3 × 4 in. white cards ruled into ½-in. squares. Each exposure was 2 sec in duration. Following exposure E manipulated a test card until S indicated that it was at the same angle as the preceding perceived slant. The results strongly supported the hypothesis. They were discussed in terms of a gradient theory of slant perception and a neurophysiological averaging mechanism.

This paper presents DEPEVAL(summ), a dependency-based metric for automatic evaluation of summaries. Using a reranking parser and a Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) annotation, we produce a set of dependency triples for each summary. The dependency set for each candidate summary is then automatically compared against dependencies generated from model summaries. We examine a number of variations of ... In a test on TAC 2008 and DUC 2007 data, DEPEVAL(summ) achieves comparable or higher correlations with human judgments than the popular evaluation metrics ROUGE and Basic Elements (BE).

If English and American constitutional thought rests on one shared foundation, it is the principle that executive power, in order to be legitimate, must be subject to law. In the thirteenth century, the English jurist Henry de Bracton declared that “the law makes the King”—rather than the King makes the law—and urged, “Let the King … bestow upon the law what the law bestows upon him, namely ... [Show full abstract] dominion and power, for there is no King where will rules and not law” (White 1908, 268). Bracton no doubt had in mind some of the recent provisions of the Magna Carta (1215), which provided a formal codification of this principle. The rebel barons who imposed the Magna Carta on King John were animated by a desire to limit arbitrary executive power, and, in Article 39, they secured a promise from the monarchy that “no free man shall be arrested or imprisoned, or disseised or outlawed or exiled or in any way victimised, neither will we attack him or send anyone to attack him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land” (Turner 2003, 231). In the fourteenth century, Article 39 was redrafted by Parliament to apply not only to free men but also to any man “of whatever estate or condition he may be,” and this process of reinterpretation continued throughout the next several centuries as Parliament expanded “the Charter's special ‘liberties’ for the privileged classes to general guarantees of ‘liberty’ for all the king's subjects” (Turner 2003, 3).

The Effect of Culture on Perspective Taking

People consider the mental states of other people to understand their actions. We evaluated whether such perspective taking is culture dependent. People in collectivistic cultures (e.g., China) are said to have interdependent selves, whereas people in individualistic cultures (e.g., the United States) are said to have independent selves. To evaluate the effect of culture, we asked Chinese and ... [Show full abstract] American pairs to play a communication game that required perspective taking. Eye-gaze measures demonstrated that the Chinese participants were more tuned into their partner's perspective than were the American participants. Moreover, Americans often completely failed to take the perspective of their partner, whereas Chinese almost never did. We conclude that cultural patterns of interdependence focus attention on the other, causing Chinese to be better perspective takers than Americans. Although members of both cultures are able to distinguish between their perspective and another person's perspective, cultural patterns afford Chinese the effective use of this ability to interpret other people's actions.

Sokolon has provided an intellectually stimulating and highly original work on Aristotle's understanding of the emotions, mainly as presented in his treatise the Art of Rhetoric. The central thesis of Sokolon's book manifests itself in her ... [Show full abstract] analysis of the emotion of anger. According to Sokolon, for Aristotle anger is the paradigmatic human emotion, defined as the desire for revenge for a dishonourable and undeserving public insult against oneself or those one loves. Of this desire for revenge, Sokolon argues that “for Aristotle, unique human anger is not ‘at’ something, but more properly ‘with’ what some other person did or intends to do. Anger and the other political emotions are certain kinds of judgments or perceptions about sociopolitical circumstances. Anger judges specific kinds of events with an acknowledged political, or what we now call ‘cultural,’ meaning” (p. 55). Thus, Sokolon argues that for Aristotle the emotional experience of anger occurs in social and political contexts where there are evaluations of worth in situations involving relations of power. But if anger is the paradigmatic human emotion, this means that anger is not simply representative of various political emotions, but illustrates that human emotion as such is an essentially political phenomenon. Sokolon's thesis, therefore, is that for Aristotle, “man is by nature a political animal” not simply because he possesses reason, the apparent claim of the Politics, but also because he experiences emotions.
