The development of urban public space has always reflected the history of the behaviour of man who figuratively forms it. Public space does not exist in its own right, it does not exists independently of man. Not only the structure of urban public space has changed: There has been also a shift in importance of public space as the activities of the urban public demand less social space for its conduct. The connection of public space and regulation of conduct is dealt with in this paper. Elements of an integrated theory of public space are collected in order to connect aspects of the conception of physical space of planning science with aspects of social use of spaces and of the psychogeneous dynamism of public space. It is to be shown that in future the context of design and use of urban public space require planning concepts that are embedded in a community's way of life.

It shows that this process has resulted not only from the evolution of market forces and the return of wealth to the inner cities, urban renewal policies and cultural transformations. The collective mobilisation of new property owners has also had a decisive impact, via the neighbourhood associations in which they have been involved since the 1960s.

The Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona: Which urban renewal?

The article proposes an analysis of the process of urban renewal, which took place in the Raval neighbourhood, in the central area of Barcelona. The analysis of the physical transformation of the area and of its social structure excludes the possibility to define what happened as gentrification in the strictest sense. It seems more appropriate to trace Raval renewal back to the marginal gentrification process, meant as a separate process and not as an intermediate phase towards the maturity of the gentrification process in the strictest sense.

After initial efforts to maintain these public spaces, we can observe how, over the course of Late Antiquity, the agorai in their traditional form lost their importance as nodes of civic life and probably no longer satisfied the needs of the population. From "Open Space" to "Public Space": Activist Landscape Architects of the 1960s

Paul Friedberg, and Karl Linn to major American cities during the transformative 1960s—a decade when most landscape architects continued to focus on the burgeoning suburbs. Landscape architects have been largely left out of the urban history of the 1960s’ “resistance” to typical urban renewal development, which neutralized ... [Show full abstract] familiar patterns of occupation and inserted “open space” as an anemic substitute for public space. The following article presents the urban scene that incited reactionary efforts to achieve social continuity, then demonstrates how Halprin, Friedberg, and Linn contributed to these efforts through participatory methodologies that reinstated the public life of the city. The paper both distinguishes their variant strategies and identifies common ground between them. While each strategy might be embedded in their time and place, the combination of human engagement, place understanding, and bold design proposals provides usful precedents for current landscape architects striving to marry socially-oriented design with Design as a spatial and material art. © 2014 by the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System.
