Foraminifera from the Silberberg Formation («Lower Oligocene») at Silberberg, near Helmstedt (Germany)

Abstract

From the Silberberg Quarry, type locality of the Silberberg Formation (Martini &Ritzkowski 1968), some planktonic foraminifera are described:Globigerina officinalis Subbotina, Globigerina ouachitaensisHowe &Wallace,G. praebulloides leroyi Blow &Banner, G.praebulloides occlusa Blow &Banner which taxa are here suggested to form intergrading morphotypes within the range of variation of a population dominated byG. officinalis. In addition,G. cf.danvillensis Howe &Wallace is found. The planktonic fauna, together with some elements in the benthonic fauna, suggests a possible correlation with the Danville Landing Member of the Jackson Formation, Louisiana, traditionally ascribed to the Upper Eocene. There is some similarity with European Uppermost Eocene — Lower Oligocene faunas described by various authors. The Silberberg Formation was suggested to be a Neostratotype for the Latdorfian Stage of the Lower Oligocene byMartini &Ritzkowski (1968). It is suggested that the Silberberg Formation may well be coeval with the Upper Priabonian as proposed byCita 1969.

We present a revised Paleogene geochronology based upon a best fit to selected high temperature radiometric dates on a number of identified magnetic polarity chrons (within the late Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene) which minimizes apparent accelerations in sea-floor spreading. An assessment of first order correlations of calcareous plankton biostratigraphic datum events to magnetic polarity stratigraphy yields the following estimated magnetobiochronology of major chrono- stratigraphic boundaries: Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (Chron C29R), 66.4 Ma; Paleocene-Eocene (Chron C24R), 57.8 Ma; Eocene-Oligocene (Chron C13R), 36.6 Ma; Oligocene-Miocene (Chron C6CN), 23.7 Ma. The Eocene is seen to have expanded chronologically (- 21 m.y.) at the expense of the Paleocene (- 9 m.y.) and is indeed the longest of the Cenozoic epochs. In addition, magnetobio- stratigraphic correlations require adjustments in apparent correlations with standard marine stage boundaries in some cases (particularly in the Oligocene). Finally, we present a correlation between standard Paleogene marine and terrestrial stratigraphies.

Calcareous nannofossils from the Brendola section permit recognition of the NP 19-20 zone. The calcareous nannofossil assemblages of this area indicate an inner shelf marine environment and the scarcity of discoasters and sphenoliths during late Priabonian time in this area is attributed to the very shallow nature of the association and not to the temperature dependence of this group. Systematic details concerning Orthozygus aureus and its relations with Holodiscolithus macroporus, Clathrolithus minutus and Zygolithus fiscus are given.

Hand-picked, disordered to ordered authigenic glauconite from the Nanjemoy Formation (Virginia), the Santee Limestone (restricted) and Cross Formation (South Carolina), and the Castle Hayne Limestone (North Carolina) yield RbSr isochron ages (λ87Rb = 1.42 × 10−11 yr−1) for Eocene units in the southeastern Atlantic Coastal Plain. View Within Article These ages, and their nannofossil assemblages, provide means of correlating southeastern Atlantic Coastal Plain units with Gulf Coastal Plain and European stratoypes.Correlation to Gulf Coast stratotypes, based on nannofossil zones, indicates that the Nanjemoy Formation (in part) is equivalent to the Hatchetigbee Formation; the upper part of the Santee Limestone (restricted) is equivalent to the upper Lisbon Formation, the Gosport Sand, and the Moodys Branch Formation (upper Claibornian-lower Jacksonian); and the Cross Formation and the Castle Hayne Limestone are equivalent to the Yazoo Group (Jacksonian). Previously reported KAr glauconite ages for the Gulf Coast units are different from the RbSr ages determined in this study. As the RbSr age determinations show internal consistency when compared to their contained nannofossil zones, whereas the KAr ages do not, it is suggested that the previously reported KAr ages for the Gulf Coast Claibornian and Jacksonian are in error.Correlation of the southeastern Atlantic Coastal Plain units to European stratoypes based on nannofossil zones indicates that the Nanjemoy Formation (in part) is equivalent to the type Lutetian; the upper part of the Santee Limestone (restricted) is equivalent to the Upper Bracklesham and Barton Beds; and the Cross Formation and Castle Hayne Limestone are equivalent to the Lower and Middle Headon Beds. Previously determined KAr and RbSr radiometric ages for the type Lutetian, the Bracklesham and Barton Beds are identical to the ages determined in this study. As a result, it is suggested that Rb-Sr glauconite isochron ages can be used for regional and inter-regional correlation and that the Eocene/Oligocene boundary is younger than 34 m.y.

THE stratigraphic value of a group of marine minute algae usually referred to as the calcareous nannoplankton, first shown by Bramlette and Riedel1, has already been discussed2. A standard zonation, based partly on the investigations of Hay et al.3 and Bramlette and Wilcoxon4, has been proposed, and the Neogene calcareous nannoplankton zones have been numbered NN 1 to NN 21.
