Abstract

This work considers nonlinear oscillations in an inhomogeneous electron flux moving in a high-frequency field between two parallel planes placed perpendicular to the beam motion. It is shown with the help of the Hamiltonian formalism in the threewave approximation that under specific conditions there occurs a periodic exchange of energy between the high-frequency field and the electron flux and also between the long-wave and short-wave harmonics of the flux.

Experimental results are reported which demonstrate that nonisochronic reflecting electron systems in the form of a low-inductance coaxial reflex triode can generate high-power microwaves with or without an applied axial magnetic field when a positive pulse is applied to the anode of the reflex triode. It is found that the microwave frequency varies with the applied voltage and also depends on the shape of the cathode. The microwave emission is attributed to phase bunching of oscillating electrons in the potential well of the system; this bunching is shown to be due to the energy dependence of the electron oscillation frequency. Some interesting features of nonisochronic reflecting electron systems are discussed.

The space-charge-wave dispersion characteristics of a thin, hollow, relativistic electron beam is calculated for beam currents near the space-charge limit for propagation of the beam.

The paper reports on an experimental study of centimeter wave generation in a reflex triode system with a nanosecond relativistic electron beam. Experiments, carried out on a high-current pulsed accelerator with a water storage bank, demonstrate the feasibility of generation of intense microwave radiation with high efficiency by a relativistic electron beam in a triode system. Particular consideration is given to the voltage dependence of frequency over the range 2.1-5.0 GHz.

The results of a numerical investigation of the flow of space-charge under non-steady state conditions in a parallel plane diode are described. These show how the steady state is set up from an initial state, or in the case where a virtual cathode is formed, how a quasi-steady state is established. Under retarding field conditions, oscillations are observed which are thought to be related to Barkhausen-Kurz oscillations.
