The Effects of Quest Types and Gaming Motivations on Players’ Knowledge Acquisitions in an Online Role-Playing Game Environment

Abstract

The study explores how the design of quest types and different players’ gaming motivations might affect knowledge acquisitions in an online role-playing game environment. An experiment was conducted to collect data. The results showed that “immersion motivation” had the most significant influence on knowledge acquisitions. The bounty-collection quest significantly affected the procedure knowledge of subjects with high immersion motivation, whereas the fed express quest affected declarative knowledge of subjects with high immersion motivation.

Skill prediction is the process of withdrawing information from existing data for the purpose of determining their existing skills and future trends. Player gameplay data are collected from various sites and it is validated using blockchain technology. This ensures that the chain remains immutable, because any change in a block’s data will invalidate every block that follows it. Players are then clustered using the K-means clustering algorithm, a clustering approach based on partitions is implemented. To increase the accuracy of prediction, players are classified into groups. Euclidean distance is computed to measure the distance or the (dis)similarity between each pair of players. Decision tree algorithm is used to predict player skill. The efficiency of the proposed method can be assessed using the measures such as precision, recall, F-Score, correlation of Matthews and Fallout rate. The proposed system improves the performance of the system as well as predict more accurate skill using kmeans clustering and decision tree.

The literature on online gaming has generally focused on male gamers and has been dominated by negative aspects of gaming. The present study addresses the gender gap in this field by exploring experiences of female gamers further by unravelling several positive experiences alongside some potentially harmful tendencies connected to gaming, including female gamers’ wishes and ambitions for their future gaming. A total of 20 female adult gamers across Europe were interviewed and results were analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: (i) to be or not to be a (female) gamer; (ii) improving social skills and levelling up on mental health; (iii) not always a healthy escape; and (iv) there is more to explore. The present study is one of few empirical studies regarding the construction of self-image, and experiences of female gamers. It has showed participants have a history as gamers from adolescence, but still face problems derived from the stigmatised internal gender self-image. Externally, female gamer stigmatisation may result in sexism, gender violence, harassment, and objectification. Additionally, females may decide against identifying as gamers, engaging in social gaming interaction, or hold back from online gaming in general, thereby missing out on the opportunities for recreation as well as social and psychological benefits that gaming brings. There is, therefore, urgent need for more research and actions to promote change, equity, education, and security for female gamers as well as their male counterparts. Game developers would benefit from understanding this large gamer demographic better and tailoring games for women specifically.

Quest-based learning (QBL) is a choice-driven approach that integrates game elements in a gamified or game-based learning environment. A scoping review of the research literature was conducted to examine the extent, range and nature of the QBL research activity, how the approach has been used in educational practice and what benefits or disadvantages have been reported. A sample of 17 journal articles and papers published from 2009 through 2020 were reviewed. Researchers studied the feasibility of implementing QBL in real-world learning environments (e.g., classrooms), how to design the quest structure or framework and how motivation is influenced by the choice-driven system of QBL. Benefits reported in the research include positive student response to the approach, flexible learning paths and options to revise and improve work. Disadvantages include mixed results for motivation, substantial time investment for teachers and challenges for students that include issues with time management, frustration with QBL design, limited social interaction and mixed perceptions of the merits of game elements in QBL design.

The aim of this study was to design a digital game that imparts the concept of urban heat island effects to aid in environmental education. Within the play-time limits, gamers must be alert to signs of warning from the environment and keep the balance between economic growth and the temperature of the environment, so they can safely manage the development of a virtual city. We investigated gamers’ learning efficiency in terms of a city’s development scale, socioeconomics and the environment, environmental sustainability, increasing areas of green metropolitan space, and heat management of environmental knowledge and gaming experience through a survey of 209 sixth graders. Interestingly, results indicate that heavy gamers are less interested in serious games; they exhibit shorter periods of concentration and lower levels of immersion. If an individual exhibits a high level of fluency in the dimensions of challenge, player skills, control, and clear goals, then she or he is able to acquire knowledge through message involvement when gaming. This allows a serious game to appear less didactic and more fun. This study explored the means by which gamers acquire procedural and descriptive knowledge related to environmental protection through gameflow and immersion.

ABSTRACT Four approaches to playing MUDs are identified and described. These approaches may arise from the inter-relationship of two dimensions of playing style: action versus interaction, and world-oriented versus player-oriented. An account of the dynamics of player populations is given in terms of these dimensions, with particular attention to how to promote balance or equilibrium. This analysis also offers an explanation for the labelling of MUDs as being either "social" or "gamelike".

During the past two decades, the popularity of computer and video games has prompted games to become a source of study for educational researchers and instructional designers investigating how various aspects of game design might be appropriated, borrowed, and re-purposed for the design of educational materials. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of how the structure in massively multiple online role-playing games (MMORPGs) might inform the design of interactive learning and game-based learning environments by looking at the elements which support intrinsic motivation. Specifically, this analysis presents (a) an overview of the two primary elements in MMORPGs game design: character design and narrative environment, (b) a discussion of intrinsic motivation in character role-playing, (c) a discussion of intrinsic motivational supports and cognitive support of the narrative structure of small quests, and (d) a discussion of how the narrative structure of MMORPGs might foster learning in various types of knowledge.

The psychometric characteristics and practicality of concept mapping as a technique for classroom assessment were evaluated. Subjects received 90 min of training in concept mapping techniques and were given a list of terms and asked to produce a concept map. The list of terms was from a course in which they were enrolled. The maps were scored by pairs of graduate students, each pair using one of six different scoring methods. The score reliability of the six scoring methods ranged from r = .23 to r = .76. The highest score reliability was found for the method based on the evaluation of separate propositions represented. Correlations of map scores with a measure of the concept maps' similarity to a master map provided evidence supporting the validity of five of the six scoring methods. The times required to provide training in concept mapping, produce concepts, and score concept maps were compatible with the adoption of concept mapping as classroom assessment technique. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Personal computer adventure games, in which the player assumes the role of a fantasy character to pursue an adventure, have enjoyed enormous popularity and commercial success. Beyond their entertainment value, these games also have an educational value, training users to become better problem solvers in the game domain and probably beyond.In order to understand better this type of game and determine its potential use for managerial training, we analyzed adventure games with respect to three issues. First, what makes a computer simulation an adventure game; second, what makes such a game enjoyable and challenging; and finally, how well does such a game facilitate learning? In search of answers, we analyzed a number of adventure games to determine game structures, and completed a small empirical study in which subjects played a game and had to answer both content and preference related questions.Overall, our analysis reconfirmed people's liking of adventure games. Players seem to enjoy the games' story and interface, and are challenged by the game tasks. Players also learn from gaming; yet levels of learning vary widely, based on the type of knowledge to be conveyed. Fact learning proved to be easiest; plan learning and learning of negative knowledge, the hardest.

This chapter presents analytic methods for matched studies with multiple risk factors of interest. We consider matched sample designs of two types, prospective (cohort or randomized) and retrospective (case-control) studies. We discuss direct and indirect parametric modeling of matched sample data and then focus on conditional logistic regression in matched case-control studies. Next, we describe the general case for matched samples including polytomous outcomes. An illustration of matched sample case-control analysis is presented. A problem solving section appears at the end of the chapter.

In 1932, Cambridge University Press published Remembering, by psychologist, Frederic Bartlett. The landmark book described fascinating studies of memory and presented the theory of schema which informs much of cognitive science and psychology today. In Bartlett's most famous experiment, he had subjects read a Native American story about ghosts and had them retell the tale later. Because their background was so different from the cultural context of the story, the subjects changed details in the story that they could not understand. Based on observations like these, Bartlett developed his claim that memory is a process of reconstruction, and that this construction is in important ways a social act. His concerns about the social psychology of memory and the cultural context of remembering were long neglected but are finding an interested and responsive audience today. Now reissued in paperback, Remembering has a new Introduction by Walter Kintsch of the University of Colorado, Boulder.

In this paper, I will describe my intuitions about what makes computer games fun. More detailed descriptions of the experiments and the theory on which this paper is based are given by Malone (1980a, 1980b). My primary goal here is to provide a set of heuristics or guidelines for designers of instructional computer games. I have articulated and organized common sense principles to spark the creativity of instructional designers (see Banet, 1979, for an unstructured list of similar principles). To demonstrate the usefulness of these principles, I have included several applications to actual or proposed instructional games. Throughout the paper I emphasize games with educational uses, but I focus on what makes the games fun, not on what makes them educational. Though I will not emphasize the point in this paper, these same ideas can be applied to other educational environments and life situations. In a sense, the categories I will describe constitute a general taxonomy of intrinsic motivation—of what makes an activity fun or rewarding for its own sake rather than for the sake of some external reward (See Lepper and Greene, 1979). I think the essential characteristics of good computer games and other intrinsically enjoyable situations can be organized into three categories: challenge, fantasy, and curiosity.

Business education needs new training methods to meet the raising demands of modern business life. This paper introduces a computer-based business simulation game which represents business functioning dynamically and highly authentically, and describes an experimental study on a simulation game's impact on participants' problem-solving skills. The study was conducted in a Finnish company as an in-house training. The effect of the simulation game on participants' test scores is studied and special interest is placed on achievement on well-and ill-structured problem solving tasks. In general, the simulation game was found to be effective in achieving training objectives. Although the working with the simulation game mainly includes solving of complex ill-defined problems, there were no significant differences between the participants' performances in tasks that required solving of well-and ill-structured problems. However, the simulation game proved to be very useful in developing skills needed in interpreting complex management data.

Little attention has been given to the psychological and sociological value of play despite its many advantages to guiding the design of interactive multimedia learning environments for children and adults. This paper provides a brief overview of the history, research, and theory related to play. Research from education, psychology, and anthropology suggests that play is a powerful mediator for learning throughout a person's life. The time has come to couple the ever increasing processing capabilities of computers with the advantages of play. The design of hybrid interactive learning environments is suggested based on the constructivist concept of a microworld and supported with elements of both games and simulations.

The paper will explore how the landscape types and the quest types are used in various games, how they structure the gameplay, how they act as bones for the game-content (graphics, dialogue, sound) and how they sometimes form the base on which a story is imposed and related to the player. The question then becomes, how does the quest structure influence the story structure? How do the limitations of the quest combinations limit the kinds of story that are possible? How rich can the imposed story be, without breaking the gameplay? Are landscape and quest-structure the dominant factors in quest game design, to which the story-ambitions must defer? The main thesis of the paper is that if we understand the powerful but simple structure – the grammar – of quests (how they work, how they are used) we can understand both the limits and the potential of these kinds of games.

An empirical model of player motivations in online games provides the foundation to understand and assess how players differ from one another and how motivations of play relate to age, gender, usage patterns, and in-game behaviors. In the current study, a factor analytic approach was used to create an empirical model of player motivations. The analysis revealed 10 motivation subcomponents that grouped into three overarching components (achievement, social, and immersion). Relationships between motivations and demographic variables (age, gender, and usage patterns) are also presented.

Can 3D graphics convey robust cultural value in an effective, engaging way? Can virtual worlds be a magic place where intercultural exchange with remote peers takes place? Can difficult students be "rescued" by unusual learning activities supported by technologies? Can teachers play a fundamental facilitating role while using advanced e-learning tools? The paper presents the educational impact of SEE, Shrine Educational Experience - a joint cooperation between Politecnico di Milano and the Israel Museum. SEE is a 3D world shared over the Internet where students from all over the world meet to learn and play, tackling cultural topics related to the Dead Sea scroll. SEE underwent a successful evaluation between November 2002 and May 2004, involving over 1500 participants from Europe and Israel. The paper discusses the educational, relational and organizational principles that were crucial for the success of this pervasive e-learning experience.

Using performance and theatricality as metaphors to describe MUD adventure games this paper starts out by defining a difference between 'performative' and 'theatrical' acts within MUDs. Performative acts differ from theatrical acts in that they are effecting 'real' changes to the MUD environment, thus directly influencing the game in one way or another. It is argued that to understand the performative aspects of MUDs it is necessary to separate 'acts' from 'meaning', and to pay special attention to the former in order to avoid confusing the questing process (which should be our main focus of attention) with the experience of having solved a quest.
