Since its first edition published in 1989, Dr Ryan's textbook on the human retina has been the basic comprehensive clinical book on the subject. This edition continues the tradition of revising chapters and adding chapters and authors to represent updated knowledge in this field. This fourth edition has fewer pages than the third but has a greater volume, probably due to a further increase in the quality of the paper used. The text font is lighter and the reference section in each chapter is more densely packed, making reading slightly more demanding. The copious illustrations remain of very high quality.
