Development and sustainable strategies of RITS in China

Abstract

In China, the railway has always been a key factor in the economic development. The intelligent railway is the trend of current railway development, since it plays an important role in the sustainable transportation system that minimizes environmental impacts and contributes greatly to social and economic prosperity. And in this paper, firstly the current transportation situation in China is given and then some basic concepts of the Railway Intelligent Transportation System (RITS) are talked about as well. Secondly, based on the railway building programs in China, the necessity of RITS is analyzed to show its strategic position. Then, according to the previous research work, the overall architecture of RITS is introduced here so as to make a clear picture of what is RITS and how it works. Finally, apart from key technologies in RITS, its sustainable strategies are mentioned to show the future development of RITS.

A novel key-based Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technique is proposed as a safety function for Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems. According to well-known railway standards, namely IEEE 1474, IEC 61508, and EN 50128, CBTC systems should satisfy acceptable safety, security, and reliability levels. However, due to their inherent low-power features, prevalent CBTC systems cannot meet those levels perfectly in front of co-band interferences or attackers. Thus, a safety function is required which can be implemented without consuming much energy and restricted resources of CBTC systems. In this paper, the DSSS technique is based on a Cryptographically Secure Pseudo-Random Number Generator (CSPRNG). Comprehensive time-domain analysis shows how this safety function enhances the safety, security, and reliability of CBTC systems concerning the standards mentioned above. It is proved that any inauthentic signal turns into a Gaussian term with significantly mitigated power at the output of the CBTC receiver. It is also established how to determine appropriate communications parameters based on railway properties. The proposed scheme’s failure rate performance is compared with that of similar works. Additionally, computer simulations and experiments verify the efficiency of the proposed safety function.

The railway intelligent transportation system (RITS) is the trend of railway transportation system in China, and it is also the research focus of international railway transport industry. In this paper, the definition and characters of RITS are given, its hierarchical architecture is proposed, and six key technologies necessary are detailed. The three-stage developing pattern of RITS is discussed, and three typical applications are introduced. Finally, the prospect of the RITS is summarized.

In this paper, the research process of the service architecture for RITS is given and the results of user requirement are outlined. On this basis, the service architecture for RITS with 7 service fields and 21 sub-service fields, which including intelligent user navigation system, railway E-commerce system, inter-modal transport system, intelligent railway resource management system, intelligent operation management system, intelligent train control & dispatching system and intelligent emergency rescue & safety supervision system, are presented. The basis for the research of following logical architecture and physical architecture of RITS are established.

In order to present a more reasonable means for the development of China's urban rail transit system, the present thesis, adopting methods of diachronic comparison and synchronic comparison, analyses the system structure, the differences between the Chinese and the overseas, and the development trend of urban rail transit systems after processing a large number of data of both home and abroad. The result indicates that the basic trend for Chinese future urban rail transit system will have the following features: the scale will be rapidly enlarged, the accessibility and the convenience will be highlighted, the mode of under ground traffic pluses suburb railways will be employed, and importance will be attached to the development of regional rail transit systems.

Unfortunately, we can't solve transportation problems by focusing on transportation systems alone. Rather, we must consider the combined effects with other metropolitan systems. Artificial systems, based on artificial societies and agent-modeling technology, are effective tools for this purpose. Metropolitan transportation, logistics, and ecosystems are intrinsically open, dynamic, unpredictable, and complex in their behaviors and effects. We must adopt a management and control strategy for those systems based on continuous investigation and improvement and should use computational experiments with artificial systems to overcome the difficulty of experimenting with real systems.

China railway has been playing an important role in the economical development and has been confronted with the requirement of higher speed, higher capacity of transport, higher degree of safety and higher quality of services. With the development of artificial intelligence, communication, computer, and its related technologies, it becomes feasible to rebuild traditional railway with such advanced technologies in order to resolve the problems mentioned above. China railway had started an informatics-based construction on train planning, dispatching, interlocking and other special fields from early 1980 successively. The conditions are ready for the transformation of railway transportation system to the railway intelligent transportation system (RITS). Establishment of system architecture is the first step to develop the China national RITS. This paper presents the current state of the research and development of information and intelligence technologies in China. On the basis of the discussion about the definitions and goals of China national RITS, the developed principle and the system architecture, which includes service architecture, logical architecture and physical architecture for China national RITS are discussed at the end.

Many challenges have been faced by traditional China railway transportation including macro-aspects and micro-aspects such as high-speed, high density, complex social requirements and so on. With the help of information technologies, an intelligent rail transportation system is proposed. In this paper, the essential characteristics of RITS are discussed which include: openness of architecture/structure, distributability of system structure and intelligent attributes and behavior of the system. It can be concluded that integration system paradigm methodology will play a critical role in the course of RITS research.
