ABSTRACT

Measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production cross-sections in $pp$
collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using final states containing muons are
presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37
pb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $W$ and $Z$ bosons are
reconstructed from muons with a transverse momentum above 20 GeV$/c$ and
pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, and, in the case of the $Z$ cross-section,
a dimuon invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV$/c^2$. The cross-sections are
measured to be {$831\pm9\pm27\pm 29$ pb} for $W^+$, {$656\pm8\pm19\pm 23$ pb}
for $W^-$ and {$76.7\pm1.7\pm3.3\pm2.7$ pb} for $Z$, where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to
the luminosity. Differential cross-sections, $W$ and $Z$ cross-section ratios
and the lepton charge asymmetry are also measured in the same kinematic region.
The ratios are determined to be $\sigma_{W^+\rightarrow\mu^+\nu} / \sigma_{W^-\rightarrow\mu^-\bar{\nu}}=${$1.27\pm0.02\pm0.01$}, and
$\sigma_{W^+\rightarrow\mu^+\nu} + \sigma_{W^-\rightarrow\mu^-\bar{\nu}})/\sigma_{Z\rightarrow\mu\mu}=${$19.4\pm0.5\pm0.9$}. The results are in general agreement with theoretical
predictions, performed at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recently
calculated parton distribution functions.

Article: Parton Distribution Benchmarking with LHC Data

ABSTRACT: We present a detailed comparison of the most recent sets of NNLO PDFs from the ABM, CT, HERAPDF, MSTW and NNPDF collaborations. We compare parton distributions at low and high scales and parton luminosities relevant for LHC phenomenology. We study the PDF dependence of LHC benchmark inclusive cross sections and differential distributions for electroweak boson and jet production in the cases in which the experimental covariance matrix is available. We quantify the agreement between data and theory by computing the χ 2 for each data set with all the various PDFs. PDF comparisons are performed consistently for common values of the strong coupling. We also present a benchmark comparison of jet production at the LHC, comparing the results from various available codes and scale settings. Finally, we discuss the implications of the updated NNLO PDF sets for the combined PDF+α s uncertainty in the gluon fusion Higgs production cross section.

Article: Measurement of the cross-section for Z → e+e- production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A measurement of the cross-section for pp->Z->e+e- is presented using data at sqrt{s}=7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb^{-1}. The process is measured within the kinematic acceptance pT>20GeV/c and 2<\eta<4.5 for the daughter electrons and dielectron invariant mass in the range 60--120GeV/c^2. The cross-section is determined to be \sigma(pp->Z->e+e-)=76.0+-0.8+-2.0+-2.6pb where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is the uncertainty in the luminosity. The measurement is performed as a function of Z rapidity and as a function of an angular variable which is closely related to the Z transverse momentum. The results are compared with previous LHCb measurements and with theoretical predictions from QCD.

Article: A study of the Z production cross-section in pp collisions at s=7 TeV using tau final states
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A measurement of the inclusive Z → ττ cross-section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7\,\mathrm{TeV}$ is presented based on a dataset of 1.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb detector. Candidates for Z → τ τ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The production cross-section for Z bosons, with invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/c 2, which decay to τ leptons with transverse momenta greater than 20 GeV/c and pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, is measured to be σpp→Z→ττ = 71.4 ± 3.5 ± 2.8 ± 2.5 pb; the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The ratio of the cross-sections for Z → τ τ to Z → μμ is determined to be 0.93 ± 0.09, where the uncertainty is the combination of statistical, systematic, and luminosity uncertainties of the two measurements.
