Serum Levels of Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide and Substance P are Decreased in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and Coronary Artery Disease

This study evaluated serum levels of the neuropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with and without a history of diabetes mellitus (DM).
Patients undergoing coronary angiography for suspected myocardial ischaemia were divided into four groups depending on their clinical status: control group (no CAD or DM; n=44), DM group (DM without CAD; n=46), CAD group (stable CAD without DM; n=44) and DM+CAD group (stable CAD with DM; n=50). Serum levels of CGRP and SP were determined using radioimmunoassays.
CGRP and SP levels in the DM and CAD groups were significantly lower than in the control group. The lowest levels of CGRP and SP were observed in the DM+CAD group. There were no significant differences in CGRP and SP levels between the DM group and the CAD group.
CGRP and SP may have a role in the pathogenesis of CAD in patients with diabetes.

    ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of Simvastatin (Zocor) on nitric oxide (NO), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and endothelin (ET) in blood plasma of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) complicated with congestive heart failure (CHF). 80 cases of patients with CHD complicated with CHF were randomly divided into two groups: the conventional treatment (control) group (Digoxin, Dihydrochlorothiazide, Isosorbide dinitrate) containing 40 cases and the conventional treatment and Simvastatin (combination) combination group containing 40 cases. In addition, there were 40 healthy persons in the normal group. Greiss method was used for NO detection, and immunoradiometry method was used to detect CGRP and ET levels in blood before and after treatment. NO and CGRP levels in blood of patients with CHD complicated with CHF was apparently lower than those of the normal group, and there were significant differences (p < 0.01). Also, ET was significantly higher than that of the normal group (p < 0.01). After treatment, all indicators were significantly improved (p < 0.01). Also, the improvement of the conventional treatment plus Simvastatin group was more significant. Compared with the conventional treatment group after treatment, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05). The combination of conventional treatment and Simvastatin could significantly improve metabolic disturbances of NO, CGRP and ET of patients with CHD complicated with CHF.

    ABSTRACT: Prolonged and nonhealing connective tissue injuries are often seen associated with common diseases, such as metabolic disorders, obesity, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, neuropathy, and diabetes mellitus and these influences result in considerable burden on society via the health care system, the economy, and quality of life for patients. Emerging findings have established important new links in our understanding of effective connective tissue healing. Thereby, the function of the nervous system, vascular supply, and metabolic state of the patient can be directly linked to the quality of the connective tissue healing process. As some of these conditions are also more common in individuals as they age, and aging can also impact healing effectiveness, such complications will have an emerging significant impact as the demographics of many societies change with expanding percentages of the populations >60-65 years of age. Comorbidities have to be early identified in patients with acute wounds or planned surgery. Necessary interactions between physicians with different subspecialties have to be initiated to optimize wound healing potentials.
