Performance Evaluation of Optical Multicast Switch Architectures using Optical Splitters.

In recent, there is a growing demand for multicasting applications such as VoD, video conferencing and IPTV. Since the multicast traffic can affect the performance of network, optical switch for all optical transmission must be efficiently able to support multicast traffic as well as unicast traffic. In this paper, we investigate and evaluate optical switch architectures using optical splitter to provide multicasting capability. The optical multicast switch architectures are classified into input splitter switch and shared splitter switch according to the location of splitters. In order to evaluate the performance of the optical multicast switch architectures, we perform the numerical analysis and simulation using OPNET. The complexity of optical multicast switch architectures is also compared in terms of components.
