Abstract

Tag-based indexing systems allow users to name web resources freely choosing keywords, called tags. Users (observers) may browse resources using a tag-cloud, a screen presentation that looks like an alphabetically ordered list of the most popular tags, visually weighted by font size. This project called Artsonomy, enables users to associate keywords (tags) to real artworks (for ex. in a museum) labeled with a QR Code by means of an application on a mobile device. The user’s tags are collected in a tag-cloud on the Artsonomy website so enabling other obesrvers to share their experience after viewing an artwork.

... Moreover, museums will have to engage visitors in their own decision making processes, in order to take advantage of their participation both in the design phases of new services (Solima, 2008) and during the service delivery ones as visitors will be called to custom-tailor their own services exploiting new technologies (Levialdi Ghiron, Medaglia and Perrone, 2009). ...
... In the last part, the user is able to associate any kind of tags with the artefact over the Web site. The new tag is then visualised in a tag-cloud together with other tags that are associated with the artefact (Ghiron, Medaglia & Perrone, 2009). ...

This chapter surveys current best practices for museum-visitor interaction on the Web and presents impressive, publicly available examples. These examples illustrate particular interaction ideas and highlight promising research directions. The chapter provides a qualitative analysis of museum Web appearances with specific focus on interaction between museums and their visitors. The material in this chapter is grouped around the interaction paradigms of Web 1.0, Web 2.0, Web 3D, and mobile Web. The main focus of the analysis is on art museums. However, when more advanced solutions are visible at other museum types, they are mentioned as well.
... In general, including maps on Google Maps where you can see the posts made and shared by other users (messages, news, commentary, emotions, advertising information), you can create what is called a real social tagging, or a labeling network of various content located in a digital area actually and emotionally experienced by its citizens (for this defined 'real'). This is a new form of interaction between society, land and technology, which has also been described as a form of urban digital storytelling (Levialdi Ghiron, et al., 2009) that allows you to create a digital territory, namely a territory able to store digital memory of himself: "there forgetting, is not no memory loss in Digital Territory" (van Kranenburg, 2008). ...

ICTs evolution in the field of digital cultural participation has helped turn geo-social tagging into a new form of creation of cultural value through user-generated contents (UGC). Tagging a place is giving that place a story: this means being able to write digital stories on geographies and to rediscover our territory in a new and shared way. Aim of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of these digital tools, basing our study on some examples of geo-tagging and geo-social blogs, in Italy and abroad, creating forms of real social tagging and urban digital storytelling.
... They usually feature maps from Google Maps, on which users can see the posts written and shared by other users (messages, news, commentaries, emotions, advertising information), thereby creating what has been defined as real social tagging, i.e. a network of labelled content spread all over a digital area that is actually and emotionally experienced by its citizens (hence the term " real " ). This is a new form of interaction between society, geography and technology, described by some as a form of urban digital storytelling (Levialdi Ghiron, et al. 2009) that allows people to create a digital territory, where they can store digital memories: <there is no forgetting, no memory loss in " Digital Territory " > (van Kranenburg, 2008). Along the lines of Google My Map, in November 2006 the Museum of London launched Map My London (www.mylondonmap.com:fig. ...

The aim of this paper is to show how the evolution of ICTs in the field of digital cultural participation has helped turn geo-social tagging into a new form of creation of cultural value through user-generated contents (UGC). In order to demonstrate the potential of these digital tools, we will base our study on some examples of geotagging and geo-social blogs, in Italy and abroad. Tagging a place is giving that place a story: this means being able to write digital stories on geographies. Tagging a place enables us to rediscover our territory in a new and shared way, creating forms of real social tagging and urban digital storytelling. Keywords: geo-social tagging, geoblogs, real social tagging, urban digital storytelling, stories on geographies, geo-wiki, user generated content, digital culture, digital culture participation, digital collective memory, cultural value.
... The research on smart museum guides focuses on different aspects: Context aware content selection, content navigation and research concerning how the conception of a multimedia guide can be improved. Content selection via image recognition has been performed e. g. by [12,13,14], barcode scanning within others by [15,16]. These approaches suffer from the limitations of photo-taking in a museum mentioned before. ...

While smartphones are well equipped for outdoor localization tasks, they usually do not provide support for identifying an indoor point of interest. This especially prohibits the context aware use of smartphones for guidance tasks inside a building, e. g. a museum. Alternatives like the use of near field communication (NFC) or barcode tagging demands an explicit interaction of the user with the tag, as well as dedicated sensors on the users’ phone. WiFi triangulation requires a calibration step for every distinct location. We found that ultrasonic signals, sent by a cheap, stand-alone emitter, can be the basis of a light-weight smartphone based proximity detection system. Using this technique we developed a prototypical context-aware museum guide and tested it successfully in public.

This report explores the relationship between the emergence of social software and the personalisation of education. It suggests that there is a changing view of what education is for, with an emphasis on the need for young people to develop the skills necessary for today's evolving global knowledge economy. Alongside this development is the rapid growth of social software, characterised as software that supports group interaction, and by combining these two trends there is significant potential to see a new approach to education. This paper reports on a study that examined the ability of resource authors to create acceptable metadata in an organizational setting. The results indicate that authors can create good quality metadata when working with the Dublin Core, and in some cases they may be able to create metadata that is of better quality than a metadata professional can produce. This research suggests that authors think metadata is valuable for resource discovery, that it should be created for Web resources, and that they, as authors, should be involved in metadata production for their works. The study also indicates that a simple Web form, with textual guidance and selective use of features (e.g. pop-up windows, drop-down menus, etc.) can assist authors in generating good quality metadata.

This paper examines user-generated metadata as implemented and applied in two web services designed to share and organize digital me- dia to better understand grassroots classification. Metadata - data about data - allows systems to collocate related information, and helps users find relevant information. The creation of metadata has generally been approached in two ways: professional creation and author creation. In li- braries and other organizations, creating metadata, primarily in the form of catalog records, has traditionally been the domain of dedicated profes- sionals working with complex, detailed rule sets and vocabularies. The primary problem with this approach is scalability and its impracticality for the vast amounts of content being produced and used, especially on the World Wide Web. The apparatus and tools built around professional cataloging systems are generally too complicated for anyone without spe- cialized training and knowledge. A second approach is for metadata to be created by authors. The movement towards creator described docu- ments was heralded by SGML, the WWW, and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. There are problems with this approach as well - often due to inadequate or inaccurate description, or outright deception. This paper examines a third approach: user-created metadata, where users of the documents and media create metadata for their own individual use that is also shared throughout a community.
